What would you do?
If he hasn't caused this type of situation before I would probable keep quiet and let him take his chances as long as he was not putting anyone else in danger because it would probably not be a useful time to have any sort of difficult discussion/confrontation with him anyway. And then talk about the situation later.

are owls really that wise? do they know stuff. for we know they might be just really stupid creatures. in fact i bet they don't even know how to play chess. they probably just look at it and the go fly away somewhere to get food or something. stupid owls. i think i might prove my theory by challenging an owl to a game of chess.
They ask who a lot, but they never ask why. The why question to me indicates a desire to understand at a deeper level. Therefore maybe you are right young Reepy; that owl's are not the wisest creature of them all.

Owls actually have quite small brains due to their fixed eyes occupying a very large portion of their skull. They do have hella impressive flexibility in their necks, though.

They are spooky, we once heard a huge commotion in the backyard (living in Perth then), so we check it out.
An big owl is sitting one of our trees, and all the local wildlife is going nuts. Sending out a freaky screeching, squabbling riot of noise, and all the neighbourhood dogs barking.
Daylight, and weird, it just left and all quiet again.

@reepbot , with your scenario, I would forget the drinking, however you cannot take him to sea.
Advise the senior officers your crewman is emotional over his father's death and needs time out.
He could be a danger to everyone if he is in a confined space and wigs out:)

you are the most wisest of moose.

I like the word why too! It's probably one of my favorite words in the english language.

Do you have a story to tell about organic avocados? An experience that put you off them? I shall be interested to read your tale. A tale that I am sure has many twists and turns!
No, no. I haven't really been put off organic avocadoes at all. It's the Owls I don't think like them, despite them being a health food. I think they like organic mice. And I honestly don't know about the candy.

flexibility is a good thing to have, both in the body and the soul. well it's better than being rigid anyway.

Um.... I guess moose aren't known for their wisdom. Unlike owls. Who may not really deserve that reputation anyway.

well you are wise to me! though i guess it can be hard to gauge intelligence or wisdom on this forum sometimes. i mean we have all said some stupid things here.

Well that is a relief then! I was afraid that you had gone off avocados.

That sounds like a sensible solution to me.

Good to know!

Have you ever liked something, like a tv show or a movie or a food, but then gone off it?
Lose interest more than gone off it exactly. But yes, surely!! Twin Peaks way back. Rock climbing. Also a fair while ago. Cats. Although it goes more the other way round if I think about it. I might not like something immediately but after my initial reaction I get to appreciate it, happens with people a reasonable amount!!
