After four decades in the music business, Tina Arena knows a thing or two about resurrection. She was only eight years old when she made her pop debut on Young Talent Time and spent the next decade bobbing in and out of the public eye. In her mid-20s, she relaunched herself with Don’t Ask, which remains one of the best-selling LPs by an Australian female artist. A few years later, she ducked out of sight again, returning with 2013’s Reset, her first album of original English songs in more than a decade.

When Reset went platinum, nobody was more surprised than Tina herself.

“I have never been a traditional artist, following the safe route, but I’m very aware 11 years is an eternity in music,” she says. “I was inspired after Reset, though, which is why it’s only two years between albums this time. Elevencame together pretty quickly.”

If Reset was Tina reclaiming lost ground, Eleven (yes, it’s her 11th record) sees the artist back doing what she does best: making great pop tunes. She’s helped in this by two young female Aussie songwriters – Hayley Warner and Kate Miller-Heidke. Tina names ballad Not Still In Love, one of two songs she co-wrote with Kate, as her favourite track from the album.

While the modern music industry barely resembles the one she joined 40 years ago, Tina says she’s optimistic new opportunities are opening for young artists. Indeed, they might find it easier to get heard than a seasoned performer does.

“Ironically the longer your career has been successful the more difficult it is to get radio play. Personally I think songs should be added to radio based on the song, not who it’s by, who wrote it, [or] how old the singer is,” she says.

At 47, Tina says she has no plans to step back.

“I love it. I love the dynamic of creating the music – and recording is fun these days, not stressful because I work at my own pace, and touring is the best part of all. I can’t wait to play these new songs live.” ●

O_O

Looks like they ran out of actual talent to induct

I appreciate how awesome this occasion must be for you! Pure joy at seeing the greatest singer ever finally being inducted into the ARIA hall of fame. Such a momentus occasion that should be celebrated.

Actually, the greatest Australian singer was inducted in 2011. Get your facts right ;)

Well i disagree about the great part for kylie though no doubt she is a wonderful performer but the point is that Tina Arena and her heart felt lyrics that will touch your soul and make you want to weep forever more upon the rocks of the pelucan bay as the sun sets on a misty spring day because you know that you will never hear something as good again.

Kylie is still having an IMPACT unlike those in 2006.
At least 1 from 2oo6 have released three albums in the last 3-4 years and is regularly touring the country - whilst not impacting you specifically, they are still impacting Australia.

it is always nice to see Kylie get some respect after many years without it though! There is a lot of great Australian music that is overlooked!

ha ha that last link kind of looks like it was written by me with all the hyperbolic statements and adulation.
