The nice thing here in this thread is we can talk about it civilly. I spent a very scary (masochistic) hour tonight looking at the Twitter accounts of the 'haters', seeing if I could work out what makes them tick. It seems all I could work out is they have small vocabularies, they can't differentiate between 'your' and 'you're' and they even write 'use' as in 'youse'...both of which make my hair stand on end. Sadly, it seems that like me, most are female. Worst of all, many are proud of the vitriol they spew. I think I'm getting old, because it really saddens me.
I hear you! It does sadden me - and sicken me ... and then I just have to laugh when you look at the profile of someone who is spewing forth with vile stuff and they describe themselves as "fun loving, happy, laid back" ... guess they forgot to take the happy pills before signing into twitter
it amazes me to read that the worst of the people who troll on twitter etc are female in the 30-49 age bracket - not teenagers as I would have expected ..
if they so despise someone why follow them at all? why when ever they are mentioned by another HM do they then flood the thread with hatred and ruin the whole vibe for everyone else
I chatted with my son last night about it and he said "they're trolls - its all just a joke" and laughed it off ... but as I said to him I'd just watched the segment on 60 Minutes about a young girl who'd been bullied and abused at school and after continued bullying online she killed herself. Do these people actually ever think that one day their vileness could lead to a tragic thing like that - and do they think that's a joke?!
Having a fake persona to hide behind and anonymity makes them oh so brave ... when really they're the biggest cowards out there ...
I would love to see Tully write an article or do an interview at some point in the future that addresses online behaviour because she had a background with working in it and a wider knowledge of the various platforms ... and it would be interesting to hear what she thinks of it, how its affected her and how she copes with it ... although it might just draw even more fire towards her ...
