Channel Nine Do Not Produce Big Brother.

Krystal'smom

Hardcore patrol.
I'd just like to point out, because it is really frustrating me on these threads, "Channel Nine" really don't have much to do with Big Brother at all. Big Brother is made and produced by a production company. Channel Nine just pay for the rights to air it. Ads for Big Brother that air on Channel Nine are Channel Nine's way of enticing their audience to watch a show that they have paid copious amounts of dollars to air.

I just wanted to make it clear so that I don't have to see one more person blame Channel Nine.

Channel Nine have set standards and allowances with the content of the shows they show and stuff like that. Big Brother most definitely falls under this category and they definitely have significant effects in how the show is produced. Any show they broadcast.

It would be naive to think that station executives wouldnt have some power and/or influence over the direction of the show.

The reality is that Channel Nine does set standards, obviously and they would 'okay' a lot of things, but as for the actual creation, their input would be very minor. Channel Nine employees aren't paid to be producers, they are paid to 'okay' things and make their channel profitable...not worrying about what they can do to spice up the next week of Big Brother.

If that were the case...the production company wouldn't have a myriad of employees that were hired for that exact purpose.

Yes, but the producers and whatnot have to put their ideas forward to Nine to accept or deny (like movie pitches, for example). That is where the limitations and "standards" for Nine's image lie. Therefore, the producers of said show are still limited to keep their ideas and the production of their show within the network's requests, which has subsequently resulted in the "new" Big Brother we are experiencing.

Yeah, I understand that part. But in terms of people blaming Channel Nine for the portrayal of certain housemates. It isn't feasible for Channel Nine to control that when the show is shot in 'real time'. Blame Alex is what I'm trying to say, basically, and not Channel Nine.

pish posh. alex may have his name on the door, but just think for a moment who the buyer is. he'd be an idiot not to take channel nine's input seriously

considering channel nine dictates how many hours of show go on air each week, into which time slots, and how that needs to suit the censors and their channel image, it's silly to act like they don't have significant input.

yes, the buck stops with alex, and he could do a lot more within the parameters he's been given, but that doesn't mean the parameters don't suck too :)

I think this thread is quite misleading. Channel Nine do still exert a lot of power over the show.

For the small amount of time last year when I was on conversation terms with Alex M (five minutes, ha) he indicated the strings were being tightly controlled by Nine executives. I won't go into details, but it was centred around that petition we ran for an Uplate style show. You fill in the gaps.

But yeah, Channel Nine aren't saying "portray housemate X this way", but they are certainly commanding things like "we need to see more of the blonde leggy girls". And they typically say these things when there's a dip in ratings. Southern Star and Nine are constantly going back and forth about the direction of the show all season.

Well who am I to blame for not putting on more bb on tv? Surely it is up to channel 9 if we can have uplate (ie, late night live streaming on regularly plus maybe a guest or too if they want) back on 9 or gem or go? Surely it is up to 9 if we can have bb on the weekend on either 9, go or gem?

In terms of the quantity of Big Brother, I believe that comes down to the amount of "BB hours" agreed to between Nine and Southern Star in the written contracts.

Let's use the latest scheduling reshuffle:

Showdown, previously a 60 minute show on Saturday is (I believe) taking up some of the existing 90 minute Thursday slot. In a similiar fashion to Confidential where the daily show airs in the first 60 minutes, Showdown is likely to air in the last 30 minutes (the rejigged Showdown won't be hosted - so expect less filler).

This leaves 1 hour of unused "BB hours" agreed to in the initial contracts between Nine and Southern Star. So guess how long the new 'late-night' programme is? You guessed it - 1 hour. Thus the total amount of BB hours remains the same, despite a new show starting up. :)

Don't really get into the politics of who's running the show.

do sponsors image affect it at all ?
one of this years sponsors would prefer the the show to stink.

Each daily show's first edit is set to the network by about 11-AM each weekday for approval. That is from the horse's mouth.

At this point, what real reason is there for this show as a "reality" show to exsist? It's more like a tweenie soap opera. They could honestly hire some actors, give them a script and be done. BB only shows very few moments of the house and then it is all mish mashed together. I mean, there is NO live stream for anyone to know really anything about any of the HMS. For all we know, these people could be leaving the film set each night and go home cause who would really know the difference... BB sends out what, 10-15 pics (with a few videos thrown in for good measure) a day with a few lines of script attached and considers that Live Feed. Then on the shows, they just show the elongated version of those same clips. It appears they just want the "money" from the save lines and are really "just" producing a show.

But in terms of people blaming Channel Nine for the portrayal of certain housemates.

Channel nine CEO David Gynell couldn't care less who wins, only that the voting process is fair & ratings are OK. This is so he covers his own ass. If BB comes across as a G-rated soap opera for 15yos then so be it.

Well said! (sadly)
