Ratings Thread 2013

Do you all go to bed really early or something in Aus - most countries wouldn't dream of starting their flagship shows before 8pm.

This was discussed a while ago somewhere by our EP. Basically, when compared to the UK, our prime time is considerably early. Most of our flagship shows begin at 7-7.30pm and anything that airs 9.30pm- later will struggle to find a big audience.

graphs updated, now with enhanced readability! :D woo!

and god, saturday showdown really put a dent in it...

Daily Show - Thursday 14th Aug Figures:

894k - #11 in total people.

#5 in 25-54 and #3 18-49 and 16-39 demo.

Id say that NINE would be OK with those ratings. It faced some stiff competition - Offspring finale (the week after one of the most talked about episodes), Masterchef is heading into finale week and bounced last week due to the Heston effect, Slide show created a bit of buzz last week but I predict it will 'slide' in the ratings in coming weeks, and premiere of Gruen Nation etc etc

I dunno - I don't feel as thrilled as you are. I get the feeling like you would be happy with any figure ;) What demo/figure would get you worried? To me last night's figures and demo's aren't that good! :(

Lol! I didn't say thrilled, I said they'd just be OK with those figures. It would be dismal if it didn't rate in the demos at all. Being in the top 5 of the demos is OK. I'm also saying that Nine would have looked at the competition last night and predicted these results. I'm saying I don't think it performed worse than nine would have. Of course it also didn't perform better than expected.

Lets take Channel 7's 'The Mole' as a bit of a comparison story.
Similar genre (reality competition)
Pretty much gunning for similar demos.

Week One

Debut episode - 2nd July
864,000 viewers - #13 overall
Didn't rate in 25-54
#5 in 18-49 and 16-39

Second episode - 3rd July
700,000 viewers - #17 overall
Didn't rate in 25-54 OR 18-49
#5 in 16-39

Third episode - 4th July
650,000 viewers - #16 overall
Didn't rate in 25-54 OR 18-49
#5 in 16-39

Week Two

Fourth Episode - 9th July
555,000 viewers - #20 overall
No top 5 demo ratings

Fifth Episode - 10th July
Did not rate in top #20 programs
(312,000 viewers)
Obviously no top 5 demo ratings and it hasn't since.

Week Three

Sixth Episode - 17th July
Outside top 20 (282,000)

Seventh Episode - 17th July
Outside top 20 and hasn't since (236,000)

Week Four

Eighth Episode - 24th July
356,000

Ninth Episode - 24th July
280,000

So whilst I understand its not a direct correlation and I admit that BB COULD be doing better, but right now it's not a spectacular failure by any measure.

However in the interested full disclosure. I am painfully (sometimes) optimistic and I strongly disagree with those who would prefer NO BB to the BB we have got. It's a pipe dream to think that Ten OR any other network would pick it up if it failed on nine this year. At least it would be a long time.

Big Brother wasn't up against Offspring that began at 8.30.

At 7pm BB came third after Home and Away and ABC News!!
At 7.30 BB came third after Slideshow and Masterchef.

It was up against everything that aired last night in every time slot!!!

Demos demos demos.....

However.... News is generally the highest ratings programs in Australian television on most nights. I can't comprehend how Home and Away is doing so well in total viewers (recently powering up), but rarely gets a look in on the demos and I've already outlined why I think slide show and Masterchef performed well

A whole bunch of shows get big increases whenever Big Brother is on.

So far, the 2008 series is rating similar to this season.

It should be mentioned that in 2008, Big Brother had no competition from the plethora of younger demographic multichannels that originated from 2009 onwards. It also aired at a time when television audiences weren't as fragmented. So for Big Brother to be doing as well as it did in 2008 now is actually quite respectable.

Not aimed at me, but I'll give my answer- I'd start to worry when the ratings it gets does not give it a placing in the top 5 of the younger demographics or a significant place in the Top 20 (and again, this is subject to the circumstances of the night's viewing).

Another way of putting it is this - the number '894,000' and the words 'aren't that good' should not belong in the same line of any reasoning unless talking about the finale/ launch of a show.

I'm kinda getting tired of everyone on bbb being so negative.
seriously, all everyone does is complain, complain, attack Alex, complain, blame Alex, then complain some more.

nobody listens to logic, or seems to understand a simple explanation of why things are the way they are.
it's all, nup, Alex is a dick, this year is shit, why no live feed? nobody listens to us.
but seriously, WHY THE FŪCK SHOULD THEY?

I'd really like to see you people do a better job, I guarantee you wouldn't get half the ratings.

Fuck why do some posters come here and moan about what kind of forum it is???

We are a bunch of diehard BB fans, cynical, critical, and protective of a concept we like. We have been like this for over 10 years.

We are not the same as the OS forums. Never have been.

If you cannot cope with bitchin and snarking and all kinds of shit stirring and throwing of mud - well this is not the place for you.

And until 9 serves up some actual content and real conversations - instead of hearsay, we are going to whinge.

I'm not entirely sure those 2008 numbers are 100% correct - didn't the surprise midweek eviction that Brigitte left/Pamela Anderson entered get like 1.5 million and that was a Wednesday? That number seems to have been placed on a Sunday.

I know you probably didn't put those figures up, but I just thought I'd say to trust those figures with a grain of salt.

No, they're no. Firstly, the finale didn't even manage 1.5m, secondly, not one episode of Friday Night Live surpassed 1m and thirdly, the season averaged 945,000, not 970,000.
