Ratings Thread 2013

Who actually does Ratings.

Do you know of anyone that actually has a box in there house that records what's on the Tv?

Do they have a box on all TV's in your house, cause I know most nights in my house there is 3 TV's on?

I'm curious, I don't think anyone on here would be a selected house, but you never know.

This Thread is all about Ratings, so lets keep it on Topic.

There is a good article on TV tonight which explains how OzTam works

tiptop,

Does she have more than 1 TV in the house and more than 1 box or is it just taken off the main Tv?
What State/ Town does your Sister live in ?

Just curious as to where they would put Them, I'm on Gold Coast and I don't know anyone with a box and I know heaps of people outside BB world. Non have them. I've been asking around.

There are only a very small number across australia so it is very unlikely you will ever meet someone who has one.
OzTAM ratings are audience estimates based on actual viewing behaviour in 3,500 panel homes in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth and 1,413 homes nationally for subscription television.

Only 1 TV in the house, so only 1 box.

QLD.....and outside Brisbane...

Showdown #2 numbers

496 - #8 in total people.

#3 in 25-54, 18-49 and 16-39 demos.

You get what you pay for, Channel Nine. Friday Night Live pulled double those figures over double the length of time. That's because it was actually GOOD.

Years ago, when they used the hand written books, our family was selected and we had a book for each TV & recording device. In all we had 1 VCR, and two TVs, so they gave us 3 booklets to fill out.

The story just backs up that its a joke.

OzTam Monitor 3500 households, but there are 9,117,033 households in Australia, not really a good indication of what Australia watches.

I don't completely understand statistics, but apparently with that sample size the results should be within 2% accurate. I've heard that even if they put boxes into a million home, the results would basically be the same according to statistics mathematics. (something like decreasing the margin of error to 1.5% instead of 2%.)

Of course statistics are just that... statistics. Just remember that 7, 9 and 10 jointly own Oztam, and they would put more boxes into more homes IF they thought it would actually change anything.

You'd think in this day and age there'd be a better way to track viewing given how everything else we do is tracked.

This is pretty much it. A sample size over about 1300 (IIRC) gives you pretty much the same result as 50,000 or even more.

It sounds un-intuitive, but it's a cold hard fact.

Goon just seems to be in a mood today.

my post from last year about how ratings work :) hope it helps!

OzTAM chooses 3135 homes around Australia to be a part of their 'Panel'. they are chosen to properly represent our population in just a small sample, so thousands of interviews are conducted every year to get the perfect mix for the panel.

each of these homes then have a Unitam box installed in their house. this box records: which house member is watching (they have to sign on and off with remotes), the time, duration and date of watching, whether each tv is turned on or off and the tv audio signal.

every night the data collected by each house is sent to OzTAM over the Internet. a content matching process begins where the audio recorded is matched to reference pieces from the actual broadcast. this is to see if a show was watched live, as live (paused at some point but watched before 2am) or time shifted (recorded and watched up to 7 days later).

all this data is collated, processed, analysed and verified and then integrated with the schedule provided by each network. it goes under rigorous quality control both digitally and manually, the output is a database of minute by minute audience viewing data.

so at somepoint the numbers are multiplied to be a full represention of our entire population. obviously it's not 100% accurate, ideally every home in aus would have one, but with 3135 homes recording data, then compared to our population, it's the largest sample size for tv ratings and thus the most accurate in the world

this year the number has gone up to 3,500 homes with a unitam box

EXACTLY what I've been wondering! also, how is noms superpower decided? and what happens to presidential suite?
I suspect they'll move "Showdown" to air either on Wed or Thu either as part of the daily show or perhaps tagged on as a 30 minute extra (which would be better). Less HMs should mean they can drop a round of Showdown too.

daily telegraph:

See I'm new to all this so I don't know if that's you being serious or sarcastic. The optimist in me chooses to believe it's the former but given the nature of this year's "twists" I could be mistaken.

wtf? Shelly craft is only 37?!?! she looks older than Sonia!

As for the whole ratings thing...its a load of rot. those 3500 can never be anywhere near accurate. As far as we know maybe there is only 300 people in the whole country watching. The multiplier thing is just a guess based on what they thing people should be watching. I dont fit the demo for what a BB watcher should be, yet i actually like the show this year.
They cant account for that

Considering the technology now available, the ratings system is a joke.
Can only conclude they don't want the sponsors/advertisers to know real figures, faking it has probably proved too lucrative to change.
Advertisers need to get it together and provide a better system - that may prove fatal to good TV though, people like shit.

Australia's got Talent only got just over 1m for its first episode and wasn't even in the top 5 in the 16-39 demo and only scraped into the top 5 in other demos. That makes Big Brother look a bit better.
