The Road

I finally got around to watching this and yep it's bleak, bleak, bleak just like the book (I know that sounds silly) but it's a very faithf adaption of the novel if you know what I mean.

I found it frightening and confronting because seeing it somehow makes it more real than a book. So I laid in bed last night annoying a tired hubby by asking questions and making comments like:

"But what if that happened to us?"
"I think something like that could really happen"
"I mean nobody knows whether it could or not, do they"
"How would we survive"
"Would you kill the kids? I think I would"
"I think I'd blow my brains out, but then you'd regret it because you might survive and live in a commune"
"The first thing I'd do is get a gun and a packet of bullets and I wouldn;t waste them"

And on and on I went until he got angry with me .............pmsl

I couldn't help it, it's the very last time I watch bleak and shitty movies, they are no good for my head!!!!!!! I don't do bleak, I never have, I won't be drawn in again.

(I must mention that years ago I read the book "Precious" too after my friend recommented it, I slapped her good and hard after reading it because I don't like feeling depressed while reading, I read for enjoyment"- So there is a movie I won't be watching. She says they are inspiring, I say there is enough real crap going on the world without reading the fictional stuff).

Bright Star

Well what a movie, I loved it. I honestly don't know how in the hell a director can take what seems like a pretty mundane, run of the mill, simple tale into something as brilliant and engaging as this movie. On one hand I'm thinking, "get on with it" but on the other I am so drawn in and compelled I can't explain it. It's like Jane Campion (the director) has played tricks with my mind, lol. Yes again I found myself shedding tears unexpectedly, a really heartfelt period movie.

Stars: Ben Whishaw and Abbie Cornish. I saw Ben in a UK mini series called Criminal Justice the other year and he was excellent. Funny looking and not at all sexy, but intense and a wonderful actor. Paul Schneider was really good too as Mr Brown. I liked him in Lars and the Real Girl.

I hated Bright Star, almost from the first scene. I have many, many reasons for why I almost walked out.
- Jane Campion doesn't do period films well at all. Too many modernistic touches - not enough building the period or contexts with the actors or dialogue.
- The bloke playing Brown was shithouse. He ruined every scene he was in with his overacting and poor delivery of lines.
- Kerry Fox looked complete out of place. She was great in An Angel at my Table, but out of place being in a period film.
- The music was all wrong - weird versions of classical and cliched for the rest of it.
- The plot devices were clunky, obvious and clumsy.
- The poetry reading with Keats doing the obvious coughing in between lines was straight from the 40s matinee movies. Ergh.
- You never really got a sense that these characters lived in a real world - they lived in one that had a vague connection to the period. Very vague.

But, it looked very pretty and Abbie Cornish was ok. And John Keats' lines are nice, if you like that kind of thing (which I don't, really).

But it was a turgid film that proves once and for all that Campion should be making films about New Zealand. But not in anything but the 20th or 21st century.

500 Days of Summer on DVD.

I actually liked it, it was quirky but the storyline was believable with a bit of weirdness thrown in. Make sure you pay attention to the numbers though or you might get a bit lost.

"Daybreakers"...and I loved it. It didn't look one bit australian and the movie quality was excellent, the storyline moved along, there was enough gore to make it an R. All in all I hope it does well.

It stars Gerad Butler as a former soldier on death row who is the longest serviving player in the game.. well he's the character he's controlled in the game by someone else.
It's from the people who did crank, but way more restrained, that said it's quite out there, and yeah I really liked it. It's got the whole, evil plot, social commentary aspects to it. Michael C Hall(Dexter) plays the creator of these games and technology.
It's one of those films that's got some subtext, but just goes along for the ride and entertainment! So it's one for fans of action films! If you're not a fan of these fast pace modern action films, where entertainment is played above entirely making sense, then yeah you won't like it.

It's from the people who did crank, but way more restrained, that said it's quite out there, and yeah I really liked it. It's got the whole, evil plot, social commentary aspects to it. Michael C Hall(Dexter) plays the creator of these games and technology.

You don't see what they see, feel what they feel like in avatar or anything. It's just what you're controlling is real people. The guy that controls the main character he has a cool 360 screen, but there's other people just controlling from like computers and stuff.

It's not like surrogates at all really, where that's more about experiencing life for real, this is about technology used to control.

Crossing Over on DVD

Finally got around to watching this one.. I heard it was like Crash, and it was but I do like Crash better.. This seems to be a pro illegal immigrant movie and shows a very one sided view of the situation. Intertwining stories made it interesting but at the end I was just hoping for more Ashley Judd scenes lol oh and some chick who plays an Aussie trying to get a work VISA trades sex and you see her naked a lot.

Yeah there's a lot of similarities in the concept to things that have come before. It also has a similar colour grading to Death Race. I don't know about everyone else, but I love the look of these super high resolution digital camera movies. So sharp and crisp, a lot of purests hate it, but I think it works, or at least it does for these sort of films.


Did you ever see the Far Cry movie? It was by Ewe Boll, one of the many franchises he quickly snapped up movie rights for. It's not terrible, but it's not exactly good. Til Schweiger as Jack Carver is cool, except instead of the film being set in a tropical paradise, it's set on a pine Forrest island somewhere in canada and the genetic engineering is just to make super soldiers. It's a very B action film that's a bit short. It's not terrible though, it's just more on the level of production and action you'd expect on a moderately low budget TV show than a movie.
Definitely one of Bolls better efforts though.

Far Cry would make a sweet film though if done properly though.

I'm a bit here and there about Uwe Boll. He's the master of crap.. But sometimes it is good crap. I liked both Bloodrayne movies.

He has done a couple of true stories / documentaries and they were good, but on the whole most of his films are done fast and cheap as a tax dodge...


OH and yeah a proper Far Cry movie would be awesome with proper Trigens.... that would be shit scary. And a proper version of Valerie, maybe even get the girl that acted in the game.. She was modeled off a real person.

I want to see some of his more recent ones. I have only seen a handful but they aren't terrible. Something like In the Name of the King, was ok but just a bit flat. I didn't think much of bloodrayne, but things like Michael Madsen not even attempting to act or do anything really detracted.

I want to see Dafur and Rampage though, but I can't find copies anywhere.

Postal was his best, and Tunnel Rats was also good.

Tunnel Rats was good. I think it's classed as a biopic.. As it's part inspired by real events during the vietnam war.

Aliens In The Attic

Surprisingly I enjoyed this. It was not nearly as bad as I had thought. Plus the version I had which was on regular DVD let you create a copy to put onto ipod or laptop from your PC... I wish all movies could offer this. Stupid movie companies.

Now rant over back to this. The movie starts out with family taking a vacation at a sprawling country house. But surprises ensue as four small aliens come visiting and try to take over the world by invading at the family's country house. The thing is they can take over people, but kids are immune to it's a fight for keeps as the kids fight the aliens while the adults seem blissfully unaware.

There were quite a few laughs here. Lots of fresh young faces some girl called Ashley Tisdale who is some teen heart throb in the USA. Also Robert Hoffman, and the mum from Everybody Loves Raymond Doris Roberts doing an impression of a kung fu grandma. Anyway this was mostly enjoyable.

Weill this was weird.... Sorry Up All Night but I just couldn't get into this.. Clearly this was satire about the world of gamers, but there was a lot of weirdness in here and I just couldn't get my head into this.

Might be one of those films, that only sort of speaks to some people with similar outlooks, experiences ect. Hard for people to key into, and that's made more difficult by the nature of the style of film. Not very accessible except for a specific audience already in tune to it. Know what I mean? Not a whole, you don't get it, snobby shit, just it's too focused on a specific set of mindsets ect.

I thought the movie was making fun of gamers, as in hard core gamers that play games and live the gaming culture.

Not being a gamer I think that's why it didn't work for me.
