Last movie you saw

Little Miss Sunshine was a great movie, I mean, extremely over the top I thought, but a good laugh. Toni Collette is a great actress, she can play so many different characters and act them out all so well. Never saw Apocalypto, those sorta movies don't interest me.

Whilst it was enjoyable, I couldn't help but thinking that it was nothing more than a more serious version of Nation Lampoons Vacation. For example...

  • Dysfunctional Family on cross-country trip.
  • Emo kid that doesn't want to be there.
  • Crappy car slowly becoming crappier as the trip progresses.
  • Weird relative.
  • Relative dying during trip, and Dad breaking the law due to his determination to get to the 'end goal'.
  • Family kissing and making up at end.

See what I mean?

Yep I see it, do you know what I hate though? National Lampoon movies used to be good now these days they just tack the name onto any piece of shit movie that otherwise no one would see.

There is allways some little feel good movie that gets raved about that I find disappointing, Big Fat Greek Wedding, LM Sunshine, Slumdog. All ok but not as fabulous as the raves, I actually hated the Wedding one.
Some of them are ok but I can't think of one that lives up to the hype. It's like people are begging for something to make them feel good and just gush about whatever they can find.

Cool, whatever.
I genuinely liked the movie. Loved Slumdog too. If you didn't, then you didn't.
Your little bit of psychoanalysis is just wrong.

I must be wrong as well because I found Slumdog really bad. I could only sit through it for about 45 minutes and then I had to turn it off. It dragged on and on, it was so boring going from question to question and then having to go back and sit through each "experience". I just found the whole movie pointless and a waste of time. I don't think it's right though for you to say that kxk's psychoanalysis is "just wrong". You might have liked it, but we both didn't. Each to their own. And p.s - please don't say "whatever". I find that the rudest thing people can say, it shows that you simply do not care!

Seriously? I thought Slumdog was one of the very best movies ever - as far as I'm concerned it lived up to every little bit of hype. The movie had everything, great story, drama, ick, love, fear. I loved the movie.

Gotta agree on BigFatGreek Wedding - I'm not a fan of RomCom, it's far too predictable, always the same story *blergh* - which is probably why I liked Little Miss Sunshine - liked, not loved.

Slumdog Millionaire was my favourite movie of last year by quite a long way. I'm kind of a sucker for whimsical love stories, but it truly is a fantastic film. It's constructed in a brilliant and unique way and every flashback serves a purpose so I'd hardly call it "pointless". It was visually gorgeous as well, a treat for the eyes. Danny Boyle is a wonderful director.

I honestly wished I loved it. My friend also couldn't stand it and watched about 1/2 hour then turned it off. Usually I don't like movies he likes and vice versa, so I was sure I would love it, but I just could not get into it. Mind you..............it was a copy, so the quality was not the best - could that be a reason why I disliked it???? Cheers, mikidiki xx

Could be miki, I saw it in a theatre and the vivid colours and sounds of India were really brought to life. You could nearly smell it.

I quite liked it. It was interesting and I don't really know how to describe it. It was also a little odd at times, but really engaging and just interesting. A few cliche/cringe/hippie stuff in it, but that' ok. The final act is well worth the admission price alone. I saw it at a local cinema IMAX 3d. I saw a screening of 15 mins of footage at the big city proper imax at the museum and the 3d was crap. However the 3d I saw it is was excellent. So try and find one of the hoyts IMAX or whatever if you can. Definitely see it in 3d.

If you're someone who's a pro war, anti-environmentalist like certain members of the board, you'll probably find that stuff too annoying. Personally it wasn't an issue for me as you know those aren't good things, it was a just little on the nose about it. Hey though, it's just human nature and shown in our history, destroy the environment and who evers in the way to get what we want. Some people will try and label it as being contemporary themed with these, but I really don't think it is at all. They're common themes from our history and it tells it in a sci-fi off world way.

I just loved the fact that the film took you on a journey and did so just remarkably. When they say it ups the level on films visual effects, you better believe it. Pandora is amazing, and the Navi never once seem anything but living breathing creatures. That was one of the best aspects was the way an actor can all of sudden be a giant blue alien and yet you still know it's the same character and it does skip a beat. They have upped the level of CG characters beyond Davey Jones which was the most realistic and best done one up until this.

Trust me when you see the film, you'll get what I mean by it's hard to explain, it was just really engaging and interesting through out. It's a shame you can't go and visit pandora yourself.

There was less action than I expected, when it comes though it's worth it! I think there is a little bit more time spent on how wonderful and pretty Pandora is than is necessary, but it all serves the story. It's not trying to be a big wall to wall action for the sake of it. It's trying to take you on a journey and for me it worked for me at least

I can't say I love it, the same way I do about a couple other of James Camerons films, like Aliens and The Abyss, but it's very good! Those sort of things will need to settle in over time. This how ever is a film for the big screen, it'll be interesting to see how it translates to blu-ray.

I would not hesititate to put it as one of the best films of the year. I just don't know how to describe it, where as star trek one of the other best films of the year, took you on a big exciting fun adventure you want to be part of, this did the same but in a more interesting, more detailed, more intellectual, although not as exciting a way.

I'll definitely go see it again in cinema's and will really just see where the film fits over time with me. While the films not perfect, it was very well done that I'm kind of speechless. Focusing on the effects seems to be selling it short, it's just one of those films that presents as a whole working real world, where it doesn't fall into the traps of knowing it's just a movie and it succeeds immensely at it. It's also structured quite differently than most of these big blockbuster films these days, and it does help set it apart as something special.

So yeah I recommend it! It's mainly the James Cameron who did Aliens and The Abyss, although there is a bit of the titanic him involved, but just enough to make you cringe a little then move on.

I was planning on seeing Avatar today but then hubby wants us all to go together so we thought we'd go between Chrissy and New Years.

Up_all_night thanks for your review, you didn't tell me much which is lovely if you know what I mean.

I'm looking forward to Avatar, how can you tell if your theatre has good 3d? I want to see it where I get cheap tickets a Classic theatre.

And I've only ever watched weird sort of stuff in 3d, it sometimes freaks me out & I have to take the glasses of, kind of worried about fighting stuff leaping out at me.
The navi look great and their world looks so pretty.

And I liked Slumdog, quite a lot actually, it was sweet (I I freakin LOVE bollywood stuff)- I just didn't think it was one of 5 best movies ever made as some people have listed it, a lot of it was really dumb, and it isn't as good as the huge hype.

Now I'm having a rethink, since we are going to Sydney and staying at Darling Harbour in the week of the 4th I think we should see it at Imax as a treat, since it will be so handy and all. :D

How was it dumb?

So what's your score out of 10?

Dances with smurfs is my affectionate name for it.........

I loved those helicopter things.

I can't score films out of ten. I have never got my head around a consistent logic.

For 3d, I say try and see it at one of those local cinema IMAX's. Although really any modern cinema with 3d should be good. I wouldn't go see it on a proper giant imax though.

AG(w)AIA

"Ag(w)aia" by James 'if fit ain't 3hours long, it ain't a movie' Cameron. Just got back in from the 8pm gold lounge session at ACE, Midland.

It's the story of the industrial-military complex protecting the capitalistic interests of shareholders out to strip mine a socialist culty commune world of hunter-gather semi-nudists who like their skin Blue.

It's kinda like a CGI version of the Danish riot police mixing it with blue painted protesters at Hopencagen. :)

If you've seen the original Dune movie, you've seen this as it's the same old same old but instead of "fremen" in stilsuits riding worms, you've got CGI blueskins (sporting facial art that is oh so last year's wilderness look) riding flying lizards.

In Dune, to be top dude one had to drink the water of life, have your mind transported to the place women can't look, then go catch a worm, and in Ag(w)aia (AGW Gaia ... the animistic religion and deity of the loonie lefty greenie socialist types these days. :)), to be top dude you gotta have your woman "see you after you've had your mind transfered into a body only a Harlem Globe-trotter or David Bowie could love, then indirectly provide some firewood (in a world where fire'n'smoke is bad and thus firewood quite useless ... I guess they ate their kills raw rather than release lifebringing CO2 to feed all that hungry mega flora), then go catch a ... well, I'm sure you can figure it out. ;):)

The big mystery of the movie was why Ripley got quite graphically personal with a couple of fags, and why there was no warning prior to the start of the movie screen, about her sucking on them. I thought on-screen cigarette smoking was verboten these days ?

Anyhoo, the CGI folk sure provided some interesting scenery. AFAIC the best way to enjoy this movie is to keep pouring the champagne and just sit back and enjoy the ride.

You're not going to give a crap about any of the characters, all the machinery type technology has been done before, and the whole "poor little persecuted communists must be able to strike back and win" shtick is too badly timed what with all the trouble, misery, and expense their ilk are busy trying to inflict upon the real and sane world at the moment re: AGW alarmism, Hopencagen, and all those corrupt commie pigs with noses in the trough in the U.N.

Meh to the industrial-military complex and the beauty of their weapons, and Meh to the minority fringe group ideologically driven scientific-technological elite-wannabees who side with the commies (just like we are seeing re: the fringe minority and 'consensus' driven colluding scientists whose corrupted science currently has the ear of the IPCC rather than the Real Science from many tens of thousands of scientists who say otherwise), and Meh to the blue-skinned creation worshipping marxist technology rejecting animists ... especially since it always leads to the same thing.

Revolution, War and Bloodshed.

Meh, Meh, and Meh.

Anyhoo, can hardly wait to take numba1son to see it so we can explore the whole lefty politics of dancing and envy it provides, as well as have a laugh together at the New Agey tree-hugging "every living thing is a part of god" anti-Judeo-Christian religion it is pushing.

Then we'll prolly get the xbox 360 game of the movie and team up to blow up some virtual renewable resources while flying cool looking but no doubt realistically inefficent helicopters. :)

First we'll take unobtainium, then we'll take hometree.
