why is the live feed only in SD and not HD?

The m3u8 file that was getting passed around on here last night is for the SD stream.

SD is a bit cheaper to stream, over a month long 24/7 stream the small cost savings add up.
Mate, it’s 20-fucking-25. Twitch and YouTube nobodies with ten followers are streaming 4K60p 24/7 like it’s nothing. I can do the same from my Mac Studio using OBS, fibre NBN 2000/500, and a couple of old iPhones on NDI. If I can do that from home, a national broadcaster sure as hell can. The bandwidth and resources they have access to is orders of magnitude more than my own.

SD in 2025 is a bloody joke. 480p or even 720p for a flagship show is criminal, and the ads make it even worse. There’s a reason I pay for YouTube Premium, endless high-quality content without a single ad. If they really have to shove ads in, then at least make them tolerable. Banner overlays, a small lower-third, anything that doesn’t ruin the experience every 20 fucking seconds.

I honestly thought Channel 10 might finally do something bold with modern tech. If they had any brains, they’d use YouTube as a 24/7 4K60p live stream that runs alongside the 10 app. But no, some dickhead greybeard exec probably shot that idea down before it even got past the first meeting.

So yeah, safe to say I’m not watching their shitty livestream if it’s full of ads and looks like it’s being streamed through a potato. Channel 10 is dropping the ball hard, and it’s probably because a bunch of clueless retarded execs are still running the show.

I would assume that it came down to technical issues. Basically, in most of the world, you can't air 4K over antennas, only HD. That is probably why it is only in HD. But in SD, it probably comes down to a streaming issue with the cameras they have installed.

In most countries, the standard airing quality over the air is 720p, so why even bother going higher when a good percentage of your households can't get it.
