What proportion of people in IT waited until their social skills were up to scratch before entering the workforce? I worked with one programmer who would go 15 hours straight not saying a word and his only interaction was turning the communal radio off in a huff. You can program a computer in your pyjamas and become a millionaire without ever seeing sunlight if you want.

That sounds like the dream. But maybe toastmasters will help me feel more comfortable around people.
