THE VIRUS 2020 - the good, the bad, and the ugly

The US is a basket case. In early March I left to go to the Indian Wells Tennis Tournament, just one step below a Grand Slam which draws most of the big names....and the fuckers cancelled it after all my planning that I set in motion last September. I was in Las Vegas and they started closing buffets, then shut down the basketball tournaments...then ice hockey and basketball and now they are closing all the casinos. The hotels no longer serve free breakfasts or if they do they give it to you in a paper bag to go. The hotel we stayed at on the way down the lobby was open and everything was normal. The same hotel on the way back the lobby was closed and the desk clerk dealt with us through a window with a slot in it to pass out the hotel keys and to sign the paperwork. Every day more and more restrictions, the supermarkets are stripped of canned goods, tuna, pasta, rice, water, meat, potatoes, soup, toilet paper and tissues as people inspired by non stop media coverage hoard everything they can get. Then when I returned to Canada today my wife and I have to go into 2 week self isolation and are not allowed to go out anywhere despite the fact I was actually less at risk down in the States than I was where I live.

Palm Springs California, usually a busy resort bustling with tourists and golfers and partygoers and at this time tennis fanatics from Los Angeles and elsewhere was a ghost town as they shut all the bars and restricted restaurants to pick up and delivery only, closed the casinos and restricted gatherings to 10 people or less. You could shoot a cannon down the street without hitting anyone and there was only one other couple staying in my hotel which was a midsize.

Canada is much the same and getting more restrictive by the day as they find new things to close down continually and prices begin to skyrocket and our dollar collapses. I wonder if the cure in the end will not turn out to be worse than the disease......If they dont begin clearing things up within a couple of months there are so many people now not working that desperation may set in and the rule of law may disappear as people begin to fend for themselves and take what they cannot buy as a huge number of people barely have enough savings to cover next months rent. Just a hypothesis but is all this worth it for a flu that kills around 1.5% more people than the regular flu? Not that I want anyone to die mind you but still.
Drumpf is the reason USA had so many deaths
He knew February 2020 we were on the brink of pandemic
Chose to lie & prevent actual physicians from keeping us up to date
People are appalled that Wuhan has some guilt, but nothing is said about Drumpf's continuing lies

His stupid ego ruining the lives of so many Americans.

Melbourne's the fastest growing city from immigration.. This outbreak and the one a year ago did both originated in those communities. Not to blame them at all though. It's just a reality.

The Federal government is passing the buck to not be held responsible. At the moment the VIC government is trying to secure funding to build a better quarantine facility and the Fed's are dragging their feet. They really want to shirk all responsibility.

Hotel quarantine isn't foolproof. It's a substandard system, I don't think it matters who is running it.

One also has to wonder if the new strains are less suited to the current system.

What is right about him? He's so negative and offers nothing. He'll be on the news every night being negative about positive things happening. Yet never ever offers any solutions or alternatives. Even people in his own party were trying to oust him a couple months ago.

If Dan Andrews came out with a cure for COVID today, he'd be on the news going, "This is too little too late."
I'm a Covid nurse
it's unlikely the immigrant population was the source of Covid
In the USA we had deaths in homes for the Aged
Probable patient zero a relative or hospital worker who had been in Europe
The DNA of USA covid is from Europe/England/Italy
just thougnt you'd like a USA POV, know nothing about Covid aus

It's so much deeper and complicated than that. The USA was/is broken. Even if he was more competent, the constant "everything Trump is bad" still would have gotten in the way. He was called a racist for travel bans. As a poster above mentions, the USA got the virus from Europe. That's because they shut out China. They didn't know it was spreading in Europe. Europe was caught off guard. The USA was caught off guard. There was no secret knowledge Trump or the US had that the EU didn't have that they were ignoring.

Politicians on the other side were saying he was overreacting. Telling people to go out and mix in public. Any action towards precaution was attacked. The experts like Fauci, even with their dismay of Trump said he acted on their advice throughout this stage. Everything was just so politicised, everyone divided. It couldn't be covered correctly, because Trump had to always be attacked, often rightfully so but this prevailing attitude towards him really comes undone in a disaster like this.

As covered in Time magazine, there already was a widespread effort behind the scenes across the elites in society to pull out every stop to ensure Trump would lose in November. This undoubtedly impacted the way the pandemic was treated early on and the push and labelling it all Trump's fault. On top of that people were primed with 3 years of conspiracy theories, lies, fake news and election denial to already delegitimise the Presidency in the eyes of so many. He couldn't lead half the people even if he was competent. That's where America was broken.

Then early March when the severity became apparently, the other side that was attacking him did 180 degrees. With their compliant media, they set up the new narrative. Instead of it being racist inspired fear-mongering. Everyone knew all but the claim was Trump did nothing. As someone that hates both sides of US politics, it was fascinating to watch it and thinking, "but I remember what was being said last week."

It was bad in the USA, but COVID hit a whole swarth of Europe across to Nother America around the same time. The USA actually did better than a lot of the countries hit. Yet the focus on Trump is a pretence that he did something next level incompetent. It's propaganda. He did himself no favours but he was already trying to operate in a broken system. It was impossible for the media to cover it in any other way. Just look how they covered politicians doing terribly bad mistakes, like putting infected people in nursing homes. Real-world, clear mistakes and corruption that killed lots of people. They get given awards and praise based on a D next to their names. It was all politics and propoganda being played out across the media.

America is probably the gold standard in the collection of COVID stats. Really accurate data collection. Most countries data sets are nowhere near as robust. Many countries actual cases and deaths are way worse than the officially listed ones. Even still, the US is 18th in deaths per million. Most of the countries above it are in Europe. Also countries with good data. The US is slowly dropping down the last and in years to come will drop quite a way further down.

It's just a farce the notion that the USA did next level worse because of Trump derangement. I say this because bullshit annoys me. Not to defend Trump. Also this focus on the US, people ignoring per capital and the fact it's the third most populous country. Ignoring how other countries hit in a similar way all faired. It's a shield of self-importance to ignore what is going on in the third world. Places where they aren't and can't test or gather accurate stats. It's almost a denial of the suffering going on. The whole coverage of the pandemic globally has been massively fucked up by the focus on the US because of Trump and the election year. That's just been one of the most frustrating things about the coverage and where peoples minds have been focused. American's not even the worst country hit in North America. In most of the world, people catching it and dying are never tested. People need to get a grip and get over the Trump hysteria. Get some context.

Let’s not pretend that the outbreak is not the Andrew’s Governments fault.

It's not their fault though.

A guy caught it in a Quarantine failure in another state. Then tooled around for about week with symptoms before getting tested. It's also a new highly transmissible, rapidly transmissible variant of the virus. There's crap all they could have done.

I'll be voting Labor next state election. Unless they put an injecting room near where I live.

You’re avoiding the key fact that they listed the original exposure site as a shopping centre in Epping rather than the correct shopping centre in North Epping. This took about a week to rectify and by that time it was too late for people to isolate and get tested to prevent further spread. The virus had already infected many people by the time they rectified their mistake.

It is their fault 100%. Victorian‘s are dumb though. They would not recognise a competent government at all.

As for your Labor voting comment: I think you’d vote for them even if they did build an injecting room near where you live.

Sorry, you are wrong
Here is your context (and Drumpf is on tape saying he knew Covid was deadly in February 2020)

"On social media the usual left-wing activist types were up and about early this morning getting to work on precisely this strategy of deflection." - Peta Credlin

I wonder if anyone on this forum was involved?

Who are you referring to?

It would not surprise me if that were the case.

I was reading Twitter earlier today and I could see all the deranged and deluded people using the deflection strategy.
