THE VIRUS 2020 - the good, the bad, and the ugly

If zero covid is no longer the goal, what should a realistic goal be for Australia/Australians?
My feeling is at least 80% of the total population needs to be vaccinated. I'd hope that if it is endemic then we'll all get it and get natural immunity which will (with any luck) give us protection from any new mutations. Hopefully it'll burn itself out amongst the 80% and not cause too many of the 20% to get too sick and/or die but you can't go on with lockdowns and no international travel for ever. I have no sympathy for people who don't trust science and would rather eat horse dewormer or drink bleach. Fuck 'em. I feel the government's aim of opening up at 70-80% of over-16s is far too low and puts way too many people at risk. But hey, let's open up to try and win an election on a post-lockdown high and to hell with people's lives eh?

I just wonder if we will get and how long it will take to get to 80% total population vaccinated.

The people that complain the loudest about thier freedoms and go on protests etc are also the least likely to actually get vaccinated, which in turn will prolong how long everyone is without the freedoms the complain they want.

I don't think you will aim for 80% of the total pop so you'll never know. Singapore is almost there but seems to have slowed to a almost zero progress for some reason. 64% here in Cambodia.

NZ has just overtaken AU at 50%. AU will probably do better now that Vic has reduced the AZ dose delay from 12 weeks to 6, which NSW did a while ago, so 2nd doses should start to step up at least.

The government has to stop pretending that people under 16 aren't people. It's a bit like saying HIV is a gay disease and straights don't get it. Wake up FFS.

Save some links for your right wing troll friends.

That could take years.

1. I don’t have friends let alone right wing friends on here. This forum seems to be full with left wing nutters. Who are you referring to?

2. Key words are “been offered a vaccine”. Won’t necessarily take years.

I'll let you work that out.

And of course it will take years.

Well, I am asking who so have no idea who you are referring to.

Meh. No real loss if Queensland take years to open their borders. Who would want to go there anyway?
Lol.

Well lots of people apparently. I know the gold coast have been getting a population boost from our southern neighbours.

Dan Andrews should do a “why would you want to go there?” about Queensland like he did South Australia.
Seems like a lot of people from the east coast want to come to SA at the moment

There are a few important things to focus on - Mental Health, Economy/jobs, ensuring Covid cases don't go too high and clog up the healthcare system. And probably some other things I haven't thought of off the top of my head.

Are we likely to get a national agreement on how/what to measure and what to prioritise? Is there a way to move forward into this next phase without frucking it up?

I don't know if I have any answers to these questions right now but just putting them out there.
I think some people from other states don't realise that Sydney and Melbourne are international cities. There's a lot of criticism by Queenslanders and people in WA but there are also a lot of reasons why zero covid is more achievable in places like Brisbane or Perth. It's not a fair comparison.

Peta Credlin said "very soon Victoria will be, Melbourne will be the most locked down city in the world" on her show today.

Yeah, zero covid is more achievable when you don't wait for weeks until you properly lock down.
