The Dismal Display of Masculine Toxicity on Big Brother 2023: A Betrayal of True Big Brother Psychology

In the latest season of Big Brother 2023, viewers are witnessing a disheartening departure from the essence of the show. Rather than promoting camaraderie, strategic gameplay and equality, the current season seems to be endorsing:
1. Toxic Masculinity
2. Degrading Women
3. Erosion of Equality

Toxic Masculinity on Display: The most alarming aspects of the current season is the unabashed promotion of toxic masculinity. Contestants are seen engaging in behavior that perpetuates harmful stereotypes, such as aggressive posturing and dominance contests.

Degrading Treatment of Women: Big Brother has, in the past, prided itself on being a microcosm of society, reflecting the diversity and dynamics of relationships. However, this season has taken a dark turn with the mistreatment and degradation of female contestants. Instances of sexist language, objectification and belittlement of female housemates are not only disturbing but also perpetuate harmful gender dynamics. This departure from the show's original spirit is both disappointing and concerning.

Erosion of Equality:True Big Brother psychology is rooted in the idea of a level playing field, where contestants are judged based on their strategic prowess, social skills, and adaptability. Unfortunately, the current season seems to be deviating from these principles by allowing discriminatory behaviour to go unchecked. Equality is not just about token representation but also about fostering an environment where everyone, regardless of gender, race, or background, has an equal chance to thrive and succeed. It is evident that if a female contestant is not in a 'relationship' with a male on the show then they are swiftly evicted (discarded).

The Call for Change: It is disheartening to witness the deviation from the show's core principles. It is crucial for producers, viewers and society at large to voice their concerns about the negative impact this season may have on perceptions of masculinity, femininity and equality. By holding the show accountable and demanding a return to the true essence of Big Brother, we can hope to see positive change in future seasons.

Big Brother 2023's promotion of toxic masculinity, the degradation of women and the erosion of equality is a stark departure from the show's original ethos. It is imperative for the producers and audience to come together to address these issues and steer the show back towards its roots, fostering an environment that truly reflects the principles of Big Brother psychology. Only by acknowledging and rectifying these shortcomings can the show regain its authenticity and provide a platform that champions diversity, inclusivity and fair play.

I think it's unfair to brand how the game has played out as the "toxicity" of men - it's actually the women who have been largely responsible for the women going home. We see it time and time again from the very first Big Brother, and regardless of whether it's the public or housemates voting, that the men will in the early stages of the show have loyalty to each other whilst the women just vote each other out often out of jealousy.

And indeed without evidence it is as dangerous to just label men "toxic" just for being men as it is to label others in society just for who they are. Other than the gender imbalance as a result of the game there has been very little evidence from what I've seen of any "sexist language, objectification and belittlement" from the contestants.

However from the producers it's a completely different story - they've reduced these human beings who actually have shown themselves to be fairly well rounded, funny and (OK, not so) intelligent human beings into little more than figures for objectification by building the series entirely around who may want to sleep with who. Even in that context though it's the women who have controlled their fate - Minee and Ari especially have picked up and dropped the boys as they see fit rather than vice versa.

Women can be just as toxic/bullying as men. Is it really a gender thing, or is it a personality thing?
