THE TOP 10
Mehigan and Preston rate — and slate — each of the remaining 10 challenger’s chances to take the 2015 crown:
ROSE ADAM, 38, SA
Matt Preston: “Everyone wrote Rose off early, but she’s certainly proved them wrong. She seems to do well with recipe challenges which makes her a real threat. Underestimate her at your peril.
Gary Mehigan: “I love Rose. I remember her during the auditions and her mother was there saying ‘do this, do that’ so she’s taken her time to find her confidence and be true to herself.”
REYNOLD POERNOMO, 20, NSW
Preston: “Has there been anyone cook better desserts ever in this competition than Reynold? He’s certainly grown in confidence with his savoury dishes and also as a young man.”
Mehigan: “ We have been waiting for him to fall over on savoury but he’s travelling well. His innate feel for food is extraordinary.”
AMY LUTTRELL, 29, TAS
Preston: “If she got everything on the plate that she cooks she’d be one of the top contenders but the frustration is she loses focus when it comes to plating. But she’s a great team player.”
Mehuigan: “She’s very much a foodie and loves Vietnamese flavours which I love. She needs to concentrate more, more so than improve on her confidence.”
ASHLEIGH BAREHAM, 23, QLD
Preston: “Very quiet and hates being the centre of attention, so it’s incredible she signed herself up for a TV show where you are just that. When she’s on song, she’s pretty hard to beat.”
Mehigan: “The antithesis of anyone you’d expect to see on a television, because no executive producer in their right mind would pick her. But we couldn’t ignore how good her food was.”
JESSIE SPIBY, 28, SA
Preston: “Struggled early on because she made it through on a wild card, but she’s certainly proved she deserves to be here. And off camera, she’s the biggest clutz. A top bird and good cook.
Mehigan: “When I watch her, she’s watching everyone else. Very dangerous. Quiet confidence and is very good when it comes to Asian flavours.”
JESSICA ARNOTT, 29, WA
Preston: “Can use everything in a mystery box and that’s a huge advantage. She understands flavours. I could see her as the one to open a wine and cheese bar, she’s a huge star in the cocktail scene.”
Mehigan: “I love her. She’s got a dirty style, full of flavour. If I went out to eat at any restaurant (opened by contestants) I’d want to go to eat at hers because she makes food I like. Her struggle is herself ... she’s so hard on herself, but I don’t question her ability.”
BILLIE MCKAY, 23, NSW
Preston: “Everyone just thinks she’s going to do well because she’s the pretty one, but she’s really creative, she’s really calm and she’s very talented. We haven’t seen a chink in her armour.”
Mehigan: “She is so clever with food and presentation. I remember whispering to her ‘I bet you’re cooking better food now than you ever picked up from the pass as a restaurant manager.’ We’re just waiting for her to surprise us.”
GEORGIA BARNES, 27, QLD
Preston: “I think she’s the most publishable of the top 10. She does clever dishes that make us all go ‘gee, I wish I’d thought of that.’ She’s a bit wobbly in team challenges because she doesn’t know how to deal with telling people what she wants.”
Mehigan: “She’s been the surprise for me. She’s out-of-the-box creative but also lovely, inside and out and one of the warmest people we have ever had. She’s just that angel on your shoulder.”
MATTHEW HOPCRAFT, 43, VIC
Preston: “I think he’s the biggest improver of the group. His chocolate mint parfait was just brilliant. He’s really amazing with his kids and is certainly one of the guys to watch.”
Mehigan: “He’s my age and I’m always suspicious why someone who is as successful as he has been in his other career would want to try this, but there’s no doubt he’s got a deep understanding of food and just loves it. There’s a pie challenge coming up and just wait to see what he does in that.”
SARA OTERI, WA
Preston: “Plates really well, probably the best still in the competition. Has loads of attitude and sometimes on TV that attitude comes off as arrogant but she is not like that at all. When she gets it right her food is incredibly tasty.”
Mehigan: “She’s feisty and has so much energy, it knocks us out. If you were putting together a kitchen team you’d hire someone like that because she’s a driver and would fire everyone up. She’s never ever going to give up.”
