How was Ben a flight attendant?

Seconded. Also, he remains very calm during moments of genuine stress, more than most of the other HMs.

That doesn't mean much. My father had OCD/anxiety and had the most agitated, nervous, on-edge persona of anyone I've ever met when it came to the most inconsequential things. Put him in an emergency, though, and he was a dead-set trooper.

I think Ben is an entertaining character and seems like an all around good guy. However, the job requirements of a flight attendant are tough, they need to be able to handle all sorts of emergencies calmly, and above all be resilient. I can't imagine that Ben as he is now met the demands of the job. He was probably very sweet and friendly, but seeing his reactions when he is surprised (pillow in the dark) and his general rigid lifestyle and routine, how would he handle the rigors of that job? Could you imagine an emergency landing? He would probably hide in the bathroom. ;)

Is it possible something happened to him and he 'cracked', regressing to his current state that is closer to a child? It is just so odd and am curious what others think. I find him fascinating at times!

I know what you're describing; I have people in my family who are like this as well. I was addressing the OP's claim that Ben would function poorly in an air emergency--I think he would be fine, based upon what I've seen.

I agree he remains calm in other situations that stress the HMs (ex: the insane crying when Caleb left) but to me that calmness is more from social awkwardness and possibly reflective of a regressed/repressed personality.

I'm flying to Tassie next week ..... so please vote to keep Ben in. I would like to get to my destination safely. :D:D

I can certainly see hating living with a guy like Ben, but you don't find him entertaining or endearing to watch? I am curious why you hate him so.

I don't actually hate Ben. I just don't like the prospect of him winning (a good chance!) when I find about half of the housemates more relevant to the game and driving the stories.

Ben just hasn't added much to my viewing experience of BB. I don't consider his grabby one-liners or innocent antics as entertaining or endearing. To me, he's grating. His schtick is repetitive. I have nothing ill against him. I just don't like him as a Housemate.

He appears to me as more of a gimmick than a real person - though I wouldn't say he's fake. I'm not compelled to like him as a person because I don't agree with how he deals with situations. The other Housemates treat him differently, which I find difficult in creating a fair playing-field. For example, there may be situations where Ben's poor actions are excused or is given special treatment because "Oh, it's Ben!"... And in scenarios where Ben's confronted over an issue, others would come to his aid to defend him or criticise the other housemate for being too critical of Ben. The housemates are all on equal footing and should be treated the same.

If he could act more like an adult, I'll change my mind about him.

Talk about total over rating the role of an airline stewardess, they're basically waitresses in the sky it's the pilot that actually has the most responsibility. Don't really think it takes someone that intelligent to do it....all it takes is some one with excellent customer service skills to which I believe Ben would most likely have, it's not like he's an asshole or something. I've flown on around 70 flights and never had a "dangerous" situation unless you include turbulence and as far as I can recall the stewards don't say boo about that, it's the pilot that may warn before that.

They swapped him up for nominations twice (Jade first and now Mikkayla). So they don't treat him special.

He was swapped in for different reasons. I'm talking about how everyone treats him like a child. I think that's negative both to him and everyone else.

Not anymore - so maybe that's why he got the sack.
Couple of friend's kids have done some airline work
Number one criteria these days is safety and terrorism.

The training they do focuses on, well they are basically told your safety officers who have to act charming and pleasant and keep people happy.
Training is all about safety of the plane, and safety re weirdos on the plane. The service stuff is cosmetic.

Maybe Ben wasn't up to it. And he probably worked for Qantas a very gay friendly company and one of the first to be that way.
There are some hilarious hosties.

Anyway, have been on a bomb scare plane trip, and saw them in action - quite impressive.

They make sure any kids are ok, they move people around the plane, move people near emergency exits - all big guys moved to those seats to help when we hopefully land.
Everything secured.
Watched out my window as they dumped fuel, fuel streaming out.

Turned back to Melbourne (flying to WA, we had reached MT Gambier just near the border of Vic).

We landed somewhere out in the boondocks, with fire engines, ambulances the works, and yeah we got to bounce down those emergency things.

A hoax. We spent all night in the airport - one of us could have been a crazy bomber. Checked us all out. Searched luggage 3 times apparently.

So they are awesome to watch go into emergency mode.

Interesting story Kxk. Things have certainly changed since 2001.
