Housemate #1 - Matt (Soldier)

I'm afraid that I'm off the show before it's even started - as soon as I found out he's from a modelling agency I lost interest (not that I had much interest before hand). Channel 9 have turned this show in to a joke - where are the REAL people like when Channel 10 used to host it? It's just so lame and tragic! Reminds me of all the actors they got for The Mole this year which thankfully tanked, hopefully just like Big Brother does! I'm not going to lie - I'll PVR the first couple of episodes but my time will be spent on The X Factor this year! At least that's real!

Wow. You think The X Factor is real, and unscripted... Someone's living in a dream world...

What are you talking about, Channel 10 BB was full of beautiful people! This may come as a shock to you, but models, actors, beautiful people, people with personality are real too. Don't hate us just because you can't be us!

If I wanted to watch ugly fat boring people I would go to the Rooty Hill RSL.

And as far as X Factor goes, I am so fucking sick of watching people sing/cook/renovate/juggle midgets while sharing their secret sob stories for a camera. I would much rather the camera be hidden and be on them 24/7 without the opportunity of a re-edit, so we can see them at their best and at their worst like we see in BB.

Life is too short to focus on what you hate, best you take yourself to the XFactor forum and live and laugh a little. And smile a bit, that permanent grimace is ageing you.

Gotta love TraLa's take on things. Here here.

First off can someone please explain to me what a bogan actually is... And why the Southern Cross is their mark?

I personally think its a bit rough calling him a bogan, especially since we don't even know him yet AND he's fought for our country! He deserves a little bit of respect.

Mathew was picked cause he fitted into the Challenge of BB 2013.

He may be or trying to be an actor, so are most people in life. The website anyone can join up and try and be a model. Hell I am on there.

He has a real story and what other reality show has showed the side of a return soldier from Afghanistan.

Most people wouldn't know the stuff that happens over there and it screws with our soldiers lives. I give Credit to them for picking someone that has been through such a trauma in his life, most of our soldiers come back with nightmares and think bad things, i've seen it with my own eyes.

I hope Big Brother gives him a chance for a new direction with life.

Personally, I would define a bogan as being a culturally ignorant Australian. They think they are the embodiment of 'Aussie-ness', and they take pride in this and consider it the defining aspect of their character. A bogan rarely goes on to higher education, and in the more extreme cases relies pretty much solely on welfare handouts. The bogan male is chauvinistic, whereas the bogan female is of low moral character. A true bogan is likely to also be xenophobic, and unable to think for themselves in relation to issues of politics and foreign affairs, instead relying on media reports and pithy soundbites to inform their view of the world.

Bogans are more likely to speak in a broader accent (although the accent isn't a defining trait, and country types will have a broad accent too), and have short, one or two syllable names. Karen will become Kaz or Kazza, Barry will become Baz or Bazza.

Well said, Goon.

Personally, I can't think of a better housemate profile than: return soldier from Afghanistan.

No wonder they didn't want me in the house. I'm an Army wife but obviously they wanted the actual Army lol. Having been exposed to the military my whole life, it will be interesting to watch how he portrays himself and the military while he's in the house.

Something BB watching taught me, a lesson in boganism.

One of the really gross bogans in one of the last series, can't remember her name, rough as guts, Michelle maybe?

Anyway, she explained the bogan aversion to the word 'saw', and the general bogan aversion to using the proper tense in speech etc, why they love 'seen'.

IE "I seen him coming towards me", is correct bogan speak, bogans know posh people would say, "I saw him coming towards me", but that is for snobs, and very bad form.

And here was I believing it was lack of opportunity/education/general ignorance; seems to be peer pressure and wanting to belong to a group, and not wanting to look too uppity???

Hmmm... I guess I was right in assuming bogan was sort of the Australian equivalent of Redneck/White trash... I still don't understand how the Southern Cross plays in to it... I assume it's similar to this?

We really don't have anything like that in Canada...

The southern cross is a constellation of stars which is visible from the southern hemisphere. Its a diamond with four stars (one in each corner) plus a little extra star at the bottom right side. It's the non-British part of the Australian flag

Southern Cross tattoo, obviously from our flag is the tattoo bogans get to brand themselves as pure australians. Majority of those people who have them are the types who will simply say to foreigners to 'fuck off we're full'.

Those who don't have it pay them out and even those who made the mistake of getting it not knowing that every damn bogan in our country was getting it has to put up with that label as well!

A bogan is almost like an Australian version of an American redneck in a way.

I don't think Matt defines what I think of as a bogan though.

A bogan, to me, is the likes of BB06's Travis, BB07's Michelle and BB09's Michael. And beyond.

I was at Brisbane auditions .. ;) all day
And never saw him or his twin there at all and I live up near the sunny coast side and would imagine it was the brissy one he went to.. If he did?

For the most part I would assume the auditions are now more for publicity than an actual means of recruitment... Someone at NINE probably decided the types they wanted to cast and if they couldn't be found at the open call they went elsewhere looking for what they wanted...
