Oh I will try the different cables tomorrow. I'll have to look for some, I'm sure I have spare. She Still limps, mainly in the evenings, not so bad ATM, we give her joint guard for dogs. Seems to help
Yeah definitely try a new VGA. If that doesn't work... Well... How old is the monitor?

@bleachy_dude you seem like you will know the answer to this without having a vested interest in selling me anything
My laptop has developed a habit of starting up with rotating blue screen green screen red screen ... sometimes becomes white and black screen then back to green etc ... sometimes it will resolve to my desktop and i can use it ok .. others it keeps doing that and i have to turn it off. Maybe 2 or three attempts i might end up with working laptop ... maybe not ...
Is this an issue i should spend money on to resolve ... its an Asus gamers laptop about 10 yrs old ... under utilised but bought so i could fiddle around with photoshop and paint shop pro on it ... i dont want to waste money on it unnecessarily but then its been a great and muck loved toy and i love the backlit keyboard. ..
Any thoughts? Would greatly appreciate some advice

Just a few years old. Maybe 3

Is the power cord hard wired in or is it a jug cord? If it is a cord you can unplug, try a new one of those as well to ensure its getting the correct amount of power.[DOUBLEPOST=1447678064][/DOUBLEPOST]

10 years is a long time in laptop land. What do you mean by rotating screen? The Windows start up screen? What version of Windows is it running?

I think i have windows 7 on it

Bright green screen then becomes bright blue screen and then bright red screen and rotates between the 3 colour screens then might change to a white one then back to colours again ... if i leave it alone for a while sonetimes ill come back to normal desktop on screen and away i go ... other tines the colours are still changing and i give in and turn it off4

I know 10 years is old ... its heavy to carry around .. but its been so good until this started happening ... and with backlit keyboard i could sit and watch tv AND play around with photoshop .. be uploading stuff to forums etc abd nit have to turn overhead lights on ...

Sorry for all the typos ..fingers too big for phone keys lol

I just would be willing to spend money to get it fixed if it would last a few more years just sitting at hone waiting for me to use it ... but otherwise know im better off saving my money and buying something newer :)
I no longer muck around with psp and ps much anymore so wont need anything like this one again

For first 6 years only i was allowed to touch it lol
Its always been in the house although has crossed the tasman with me a few times ... well maybe 6 or 7 ...

Since the boys didnt get to touch it no viruses no sticky fingers no chips between keys no drinks spilt ...

Sadly under utilised for the great laptop it was back when i got a friend to get it for me in the states ... was just over au 1000 so ive looked after it like it was a 3rd child lol

yes only when i turn it on ....ive been waiting for the day it just wont start at all ...

Hrm. Your three most likely causes are the screen, video card, or software.

As you reckon it only happens on start up I don't think it's the screen that needs to be replaced as you'd expect it to happen when you adjust the screen as well or at other times.

With the age of the laptop I'm surprised it can handle windows 7. Have you upgraded it recently?

Also are you able to hook it up to a TV/monitor?

we hook it up.to tv via hdmi cable .... ive wondered if doing that caused the issue to start but dont think so

You should try having it hooked up to the TV then when you start it up to see if problem is the same on the TV. If the same thing is happening on the TV then its definitely something to do with the video card/software.

It came with vista but pretty sure we upgraded to 7 when that came out ...but will have to check

Apart from Office photoshop and paintshop its barely had much on it .... being a gamers laptop i was told it was more than capable of running it

Oh ok will do ... i usually start it up and then if it will get through to normal desktop ill hook up then

Do you think its even worth spending money on to replace video card?given its age am i likely to find one thats compatible?

Yeah make sure you plug it in before you start up this time though. It may automatically duplicate the screen otherwise give it a few minutes to start up and then when you'd normally be waiting to see if it'll go to the desktop duplicate the screen using the shortcut keys.

As for replacing the video card I'm not sure if you can with laptops it depends on the model.
