Thought I'd cross-post on the topic of "High Places Phenomenon" as some might find it helpful to learn that somebody leaping off a high place to their death might not actually indicate a deliberate rejection of friends and family or even the desire to die !

So, from http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=2015264&p=-1&#bottom

Coz the free ride party is over and the big bad real world and ever increasing responsibility for self is fast approaching and one has mistakenly decided "it doesn't get any better than this" ?

It really doesn't have to involve so-called "depression".

Then there is the matter that some folk tend to have the urge to jump when presented with simple/easy access to high places.

google "High Place Phenomenon" or "urge to jump" and see what I mean. Variants of "Do you get the urge to jump when in high places" are near standard psych questions.

See these links for starters: http://www.xojane.com/fun/turns-out-im-not-suicidal-after-all and http://bodyodd.nbcnews.com/_news/20...eird-urge-to-jump-off-a-bridge-explained?lite

So, it really could simply be yet another tragic case of being alone in a high place and one part of her out of the blue went "why not" and was acted on before another part of her got the chance to go "no don't !" and countermanded.

WOW & Farout, I think this is what I have, and have wrongly called vertigo.

I suddenly developed a very weird sensation in my 20s in high places, cliffs, ledges, hotel balconies.
It started at the opening of a fancy place hotel, that kind of haso. bit of an optical illuson with internal balconies on different levels.
It feels like I'm being pulled to go over the edge, not so much wanting to leap - more like a magnet, and I won't be able to stop the pull.

Very freaky - and i used to have no fear of heights and was a bit of a thrill seeker, and being up high in things like planes doesn't bother me, rides I used to love freak me out now, big slides are fine, and I have allways wanted to skydive - no idea how i would feel up there now.

She gets them on the 19th dec. Most of her friends have them already which is a bit surpising considering she goes to a socio-economic high school.

She is lucky not to be the first one. Do you think she will be use to them by Christmas day?

EVERYONE has braces these days lol, they are all the rage. Miss had them on for just over 3 years (12 - 15 years ish). Prior to the actual braces she had this fixed brace thing that she had to wind out daily then for the next 6 months she had the fixed brace windy thing and the actual braces.

Initially they were uncomfortable and she found it difficult to eat, she was eating so slowly she got full quickly, the weight dropped off her and as she was tall and slim to start, people asked me if I was feeding her enough.

After a while she was fine and now at 21 she has beautiful teeth though she still has this thin wire band behind the teeth to hold them in place for the next few years, she said she doesn't even notice it is there.

That's true, kids don't get teased if they have braces these days, they get teased more if they don't and they need them. My daughter has them, she was really annoyed because the orthodontist wouldn't put them on until Jan this year when all of her friends had them a year or so before. She still had a couple of molars that hadn't come through so logically he wouldn't do them until they did. There wasn't enough room for it to grow straight up so they have only just this week finished moving the other teeth out of the way and putting the big spring thing on that tooth to drag it up and in line with the others. She says this one is more painful that it was when she first got them on. She's still on a diet of soup and yoghurt.

I'm glad you mentioned about the weight loss Eliza. I hadn't though of that. In the past month or so Daughters size 8 jeans have suddenly started falling down so I've been a bit more attentive to what she's actually putting into her mouth because I don't want her to start this dieting thing and she seemed to be eating all of the right things, just less of them but I hadn't thought of the slowing of the chewing and her filling up quicker. She says she's just not so hungry. So thanks, that was a lightbulb moment for me because like your daughter, she can ill afford to start losing weight.

Yeah way more corrective dentistry going on now - because we have much better dentists. Dentists were rather crap when i was a kid.

And had improved by my teens - I needed teeth removed to make room for my adult teeth and a plate to straighten things.
And the dentist that fixed it in my teens, laughed at what the fools had tried when I was 10.

And basically, most of us don't have big enough jaws anymore to take the teeth that grow.

(Imagine my poor grandmother's lot - choice between the town's drunk doctor or the sober blacksmith to treat toothache, most went for the blacksmith).

6 days so probably not. She can loose a bit of weight. Thankfully she loves soups and yoghurt so she'll still be well fed during that first week.

Honestly her teeth are a huge hot mess. Like really bad. Not just a few a little bit crooked, they're all very much crooked. There was no getting out of it, she'd end up with cavities because they're so hard to keep clean being all overlapped.

Poor little thing, hope she still gets to enjoy a yummy Xmas dinner. Turkey through a straw would be no fun.
