Nine identical squares are created with 24 matchsticks as shown in the illustration.

Can you remove 6 matchsticks so that only three squares remain? No damaging or loose ends of the matchsticks is allowed.

Here's a couple of ways to remove 6 matches and be left with 3 squares.

...I was wracking my feeble little brain trying to solve it but couldn't figure it out... thank God you posted a couple of answers... are there any other solutions Topaz?... great puzzle... it had me stumped... I love that one of the sun going through the hoop... it's awesome... cheers.

I'm not sure if there are any other solutions, if anyone has a different one it would be good if they can let us know.

Change 5 Squares to 4 Squares by...
Moving 2 matches to new positions to get only 4 squares, no overlapping or loose ends, 16 matchsticks in total.

I think I've got a few (4?) solutions Topaz.

By taking 2 adjacent matches out of that central cross and using them to finish the big centre square, each giving three small squares and one large square.
