Big Brother 2006 on official YouTube Channel (Live-streamed 26-28 Sep & 3-5 Oct)

BB (re the upcoming controversies, etc): "Nobody is asking to censor anything, we think some people just have a theory that we would but we are not trying to revise history just relive and appreciate how far we have come. We appreciate every one being respectful about a low point in this season. this episode will not be until next weekend"

LOVE THIS
The right move too. We can’t just pretend it didn’t happen, media will bring attention to it regardless. I think it’s bigger of them to acknowledge it rather than hiding

Gretel saying you need to study 4 unit maths to understand the evict/save… I feel seen 😅
I did think of you saying that 😂😂

I was a maths/science nerd in school so it made sense to me. But it did frustrate me how poorly the show explained the process to fans.

For this process they should have revealed the actual numbers rather than just the %s. That way for those who could have been bothered to play around with the math (like I did as I’m a nerd!) then it would have made more sense to more people.

In my opinion it was a good idea but flawed as based on the merged graphs it was evident that a majority of the votes were to evict rather than save, so even if someone was getting a lot of saves votes, a lot of the time they weren’t enough to cancel out the large amount of evict votes the evictee received. Emma from 07 comes to mind.

I think in BB Thailand they just deducted the Save % from the Evict %, which was a lot more straight forward.

It's been a very busy day in the live stream chat. Camilla, David, Jamie, Hotdogs and Reggie were all part of the conversation at some point. David was particuarly involved and shared a lot of insight, probably the most we've had from a housemate so far.

So here's a summary of tidbits, which I thought you guys might find interesting:
  • as @Rison already posted, the guy who ran at Dave at his eviction was allegedly an obsessed fan who "had been fired from working on set due to his obsession" (the last bit was never clarified so it's unknown what exactly he meant by this, and if it was actually an ex BB employee)
  • Karen and Krystal were an instant shoe-in to enter the house after a security guard encouraged Karen to also sign-up while she waited outside for Krystal, who was already auditioning
  • he mentioned that "Karen was a lot of fun... I really relied on her maturity as only Gaelan, her and myself had been around and were aged [...] Karen was very upfront with all her beliefs, it was refreshing... though, ironic that she gave Tilly a hard time for being a bit tarty"
  • on this, he added "I reckon the younger housemates found the experience so much easier... the more mature housemates struggled with the concept"
  • "Krystal's eye makeup got bigger and bigger each week" (🦋)
  • David catches up with both Anna and Camilla very regularly, he recently visited Camilla at her home in Indonesia
  • of those two, and after watching these episodes for the first time, he said "Camilla and Anna's relationship, it's so strange, I'm such good mates with both of them now" and "hilarious how people in the house often targeted other housemates for their own insecurities... it's such an incredible social experiment"
  • similar to how the BB05 housemates thought Glenn was a fan favourite, David was saying "in the house we all thought Gaelan was a legend and was a shoe-in to win, but it seemed his humour (which I thought was awesome) didn't translate to TV" and added "as housemates we thought Katie and Gaelan were the most popular, but it was the intruders that kinda let slip that wasn't the case"
  • while the Michael/Insider reveal played, David expressed A LOT of remorse specifically for how he reacted at the time and said his reaction was his absolute biggest regret from his time in the house - "I really would have loved to get to know Mikey after the show... to find out who he is"
  • Michael "immigrated to the US" and David joked Michael might be involved with Turning Point USA now (yikes)
  • the BB account reached out to David and offered to provide him with details to contact Michael if he wanted - they mentioned there's current crew who worked on the 2006 season that can assist, which further backs our theory the 2025 series is being developed by OG crew
  • this is the first time he's learned he was a candidate to be voted by the public to be the Insider, both times - "no way I could have done it"
  • David also defended Michael regarding the "Gretel Incident" and acknowledged "Gretel was an incredible host... but that one situation unfortunately she was caught between defending her team to a housemate she wasn't cool with and, I feel, she felt was OTT"
  • he spoke about his relationship with Sherif and how it affected his time in the house, as well as his passion for why he entered (regarding his sexuality and making a statement to a very backwards Australia at the time), saying "the theme of the year was relationships... so I had to keep up the appearance... but 3 weeks beforehand I had met this amazing guy... I had the complete head smash situation... would I stay on my farm with this great love affair or go on a show and do my bit to change Australia through conversation so that we gay people were no longer seen as less than"
  • he said Dino was "almost a dead ringer" for his boyfriend so found him very attractive (...join the club...)
  • he also "would love to meet up with Darren, he'd be 40 now"
  • David apparently avoided John in the house a lot because John's Tourettes tick (the sucking noise) was "infuriating... it drove me insane... I didn't get to know him as well as I wanted to..." (weird thing to be annoyed about, but I spose in that environment it might get a bit much)
  • on this, he also said he's never seen John and Ashley since the day they both exited the house together (wow)
  • something else I found very bizarre was his genuine shock about finding out they filmed in the bathroom and that there was an Uncut/Adults Only show, he mentioned this a few times and stated "we didn't know about it and it was a massive shock coming out... somehow we thought that they only showed in the bathrooms if it was essential to storyline" (this is so weird to me... had he never seen the show, especially in those years... like ever?)
  • said everyone in the house thought Jade was "odd... lovely but odd"
  • and said this season was "a house full of lovely people with a nasty BB"
Then Jamie popped in with this one-liner: "I was out purchasing a variety of toothbrushes last night, so couldn't make it" (iykyk). I gotta say Jamie was an absolute joy in the chat. He did praise David during the stream of the episode when David spoke about gay marriage not being legal, which was nice. Jamie still seems so...chill. Not much different to when he was in the house, I guess.

This is all amazing, thank you! 🙌

He was surely told that about the toilets, and somehow assumed it meant the bathrooms as a whole. But if he hadn't ever seen the show, I don't know how he thinks he can get away with saying "we". 😭😂 As if no one on the show had ever seen it before.

Yeah. I feel this could be a good sign of where they’re heading, to be honest. They’re not scared or ashamed of the potential controversy that can come with a show like this. I mean, it’s literally being promoted in the current promos!

So hopefully this means they’re doubling down on not trying to enforce some kind of false “family friendly” pretense. Or at least as much as they can by 2025 standards.

Thank you so much @the Theorist for recapping all the interesting info from the former housemates in the chat. The info is very much appreciated and the dedication to keeping up with everything and posting for those who missed it. 👏👏👏👏👏

I think in BB Thailand they just deducted the Save % from the Evict %, which was a lot more straight forward.

Big Brother Germany adopted this system first, I think (along with a few other things Australia has done like the deeper voice for Big Brother, the 05 intro package for housemates, the voice analyser and later on the housemate handgranades form 08). The graphics for our final season with that system looked quite nice actually (and was certainly easier to understand)

A couple of years later, it was Big Brother Philippines that adopted it. I'm not sure if it was directly influenced by Australia.. PBB certainly used a lot of ideas from Australia as well, but the Filipino production seemed to be particular fans of our 9th season and even invited the porn star that German production hired to boost ratings.

BB Thailand aired its final episode during Australia's 06 season.

Oooooooh, thanks for that! I've always thought the idea of comparing the nomiee's votes to only themselves as opposed to comparing them to all of the nominees as a group made more sense than the complicated merging method.

As seen in your included clip;

Housemate A's votes were 56% evict and 44% save
Housemate B's votes were 66% evict and 34% save - Evicted with the higher % to evict and/or lower % to save.

Whilst I do understand why the merging formula is used it makes more sense to ask the viewer if they'd like to evict or save each nominee and then the person who recorded the higher evict margin is evicted. Of course SMS/phone voting makes this hard hence why the numbers to evict and save were definitely not equal, so voting would probably need to have been done on the website/app for the numbers to be equal and fair.

Jamie was made for those steamy shower montages. 😆

Yeah.. but I don't think Germany or the Philippines ever cared about an unequal number of votes. I think even with online voting, it would still be somewhat unequal unless you guide people through the votes. Some German fansites used to have votes where you can upvote or downvote housemates.. the ones at the very top and the very bottom usually had more total votes than the one in the middle. There were just too boring for anyone to bother to vote.

In terms of voting being equal and fair, it's worth to check out Big Brother Brasil. Voting there is done online, it's free to vote and you have unlimited votes, which is part of the reason why they always have such high vote counts. Last year, they changed it a bit though. There are now two separate votes per eviction: One that is still free for all with unlimited votes, the other one requires you to register an account with your tax number and everyone only gets one vote. The average of both votes is the final result.

Last year, it didn't really matter but this year there were a few evictions where the single and the unlimited votings had different results. The final vote for the winner had different results as well.

Wow. Missed quite a bit of the stream so far. Great insight reading up.

I’ll add, though subjective, I always enjoyed BB6. Fond memories of watching it despite the slight shift from the original social experiment concept. I found evil big brother entertaining and I personally cannot fault the Proost/Colquhoun BB personality. I do not expect the reboot to be a total reset to the original format. People’s attention spans these days might not have the ability to stay tuned long enough since the first couple seasons were a relatively slow burn. I’d like to see a hybrid of the Abbott and Noble days.

Needless to say season 6 and season 3 I intend to archive myself once the episodes are all made available. My favorite ones with 5 not far behind.
