Big Brother 2006 on official YouTube Channel (Live-streamed 26-28 Sep & 3-5 Oct)

I wonder whose decision it was to keep Carmel off screen. Presumably Kris Noble and surely not Carmel herself. As already discussed, the devolution from social experiment to just trashy tv show made her feel a bit redundant, but there were so many opportunities to include her and possibly improve the vibe of the show.

I wonder if she was still around by 08. Almost feels embarrassing to have her on board by then.

It definitely comes across by the casting of S5 in particular she'd been sidelined from that aspect of the show by that stage at least. Pity because the whole social experiment was what made the original format Big Brother. So when they're promising us old school BB in November I hope we get the real deal.

I never really picked up on how drastic the change was prior to this YouTube stream thing. Even when I watched them all one by one in 2021 I think I was just too disillusioned in the process to think about it.

But it’s made me realise that I have looked at the channel ten era with rose coloured glasses for years. It’s actually quite embarrassing at times to look at. Not the Peter Abbott years but definitely the Kris Noble era.

Even the British and American versions went through a decrease in quality. The British one went very far into casting quite insane people and became a literal human circus, whilst the U.S. version has become this majorly camp game show that’s edited as if the audience is in primary school.

The more the years pass the more I look at big brother and can somewhat understand why people demean the show and question why it’s still on air.

Yeah I sort of get it. I still enjoy it but I can see why some people viewed it as trash tv. I would say 2005 was easily the worst for this component, at least of the Gretel seasons.

Season 2 is too boring for me to recommend to anyone but S1 and especially S3 are actually reasonably high brow I feel. It really was a social experiment that I think could actually appeal to intellectual types. I myself am not even close to an intellectual so I might have this completely wrong but they are surely not just appealing to the lowest common denominator.

Honestly the later seasons have been a somewhat tough watch. I didn’t realise it 20 years ago but BBAU definitely lost its spark from 05 onwards.

I never expected to hear that from you.
Yes this is definitely a revelation! Is this growth or a bad thing, I’m not sure 😅
I tuned 25 in May, I think my frontal lobe is finally developing/developed and I'm noticing I'm starting to look at things a bit differently. Maybe its because the more I indulge in the RTV universe the more I notice that it regularly disappoints lol.

Don't get me wrong I don't mean to come across so negatively! I think I'm just entering an awkward age where I'm passing the threshold between youth and genuine young adulthood. For what it's worth I think 2001 and 2003 are fantastic seasons that capture the social experiment aspect perfectly, 02 is produced well but just didn't hit the highs of the other two mainly because the cast didn't land as hard. 04/05 were always seasons I looked at as my faves but as I've aged I look at them a bit more critically. I think 06 deserves its flowers and 07 is massively underrated.

I really want to be hopeful about the 2025 season, I just can't help but doubt the television industry these days.

I love this perspective. Unfortunately I am 37 so have no such excuse but I absolutely agree with your assessment of the seasons.

BB (re the upcoming controversies, etc): "Nobody is asking to censor anything, we think some people just have a theory that we would but we are not trying to revise history just relive and appreciate how far we have come. We appreciate every one being respectful about a low point in this season. this episode will not be until next weekend"

LOVE THIS
