BBUK 2024: Returns Oct. 6th

The verdict now in on watermelon gate - OFCOM basically laughed off any complaints and states there was no compliance issue. As we said at the time ITV completely overreacted.
Big Brother, ITV2, 22 October – 553 complaints
The majority of complaints were about imagery on a contestant’s clothing. Taking into account, among other things, that the prominence and duration of the image was limited, it was consistent with the individual’s right to personal expression, and it did not represent affiliation to a terrorist organisation, we did not find grounds to pursue further.

Complaints about the Sarah incident were also rejected.

I do agree when you say pathetic. If they're going to increase it then it needs to increased by at least 3-4 weeks. 7 weeks just delays the unimpressive finale week by 7 days, it won't add anything of actual value to the show.

I could live with 8 weeks but yes ideally a 10 week series would work best. The pacing issues in this era are really unforgivable and just another symptom of trying to model BB after something that it’s not. It was TOWIE with Channel 5 and it’s Love Island this time around.

Maybe it’s just me but that fact that we just get over the awkward getting to know you stage of the first 2-3 weeks and we’re essentially at the finale takes a lot away from my enjoyment of what would actually be a decent series if they had the time to tell a full story.

Nope, not just you. It really takes about a month for the storylines to really formulate well into an interesting narrative in an average season. That second month is where interest should peak, not the time for things to wrap up. It doesn't feel like an event/experience until those later weeks to me tbh. Week 8-10 is where things steadily slow down especially when big names leave, so a finale should be no earlier than that. 6 weeks works for Survivor because its so fast paced, Big Brother is more of a slowburner and needs extra time to find its footing.

Exactly. The shorter cycle is also one of two reasons why CBB works as well as it does. The other being that all of its cast come in with an already established story line. Which is why the late Channel 5 era civilian series were cast the way they were and why they could essentially get away with cutting back the runtime like they did.

An extra week doesn't really make a difference or solve any problems - whilst I agree it should be longer I think 8 weeks is the perfect compromise. Means it isn't over before it starts and doesn't outstay it's welcome, plus gives them just about enough time to do the evictions if they do a couple of doubles and then one extra midweek double eviction.

Yeah I noticed this when I tallied up the Day's lengths of the seasons I have left to watch, BB17, 18 and 19 are all under 60 Days (50, 54 and 45) So it'll be interesting to see how that feels once I get there.

Having just finished BB11 it went back to 11 weeks to fit UBB as a capstone to the CH 4 Era, plus it had a pre couple days starting on the Wednesday, so cycle wise aligned with the evictions it kindof feels like it ended at the conclusion of 'Week 10' and some change even though it was pretty much 77 days (11 Weeks flat) which is a good solid length in that goldilocks zone imo.

I also noted on CBB side of things a couple seasons creep upwards to a bit over 4 weeks (hitting around the 30-32 day mark) going a little bit beyond the longest Ch 4 CBB seasons (like CBB5 and 7 which were pushing the 26-27 day mark).

Thats good news though at least its better than nothing I spose. The other thing though is like has been mentioned overdoing the number of housemates on Launch.

Also note that comparing ratings for CBB against the civilian series doesn’t really translate directly. As noted above CBB uses a shorter eviction cycle and a smaller sample size when averaging the overall series. Trying to apply this same concept to the civilian series has only kind of worked but overall we’ve gotten a crappier product for it. A slump in ratings has to be expected for any civilian series.

If you consider a bandaid for a gunshot wound is helping then of course it’s a good thing. If they’d have added this extra week last series I’d be more willing to accept it but at this point it feels pretty insignificant.

One thing which will impact them this year is Celebrity Traitors has been announced for the autumn. I suspect the BBC will air it in September (before Strictly really gets going) so there won't be a direct clash but airing directly after it will do BBUK no favours at all.

My only interest in the upcoming Celeb series is seeing the new house (which by all accounts is basically the old house with a couple of bits removed) - I've a bit more time for the civilian version than the celeb but as things stand right now I wouldn't care one bit if it didn't return in the autumn.
