BBAU Rewatch

I'm remembering feeling the same way at the time. I felt he was a bit of a show pony. Someone who knew he was being funny and amped it up. I think he got away with it because there's something innately likeable about him. It may just be that huge smile and the way his face genuinely lights up. But yeah, I think producers helped him along, though it really wasn't needed.
Yeah I feel exactly as what you just wrote. He is a phenomenal housemate, there is no debating that at all. I see it as similar to giving the top student in a class a tutor. Unnecessary help to an outcome that will come naturally anyway. I don't for a minute even consider the thought of him not being the same in real life.

I actually think it's probably best that an All-Stars version of BBAU was done without an audience vote, because he'd easily just win every time even without any production help.

Already in a poor mood after watching the Day 7 daily show. It was great that the show returned to Sunday nights, but absolutely no content from Friday night made it to air. I remember how pissed off I was when the live updates was axed as well. The whole fun of the show was getting to be aware of what went on outside of the broadcast on television.

The airtime in the first week was heavily skewed towards Priya and Katie as well and their decision on taking the $20,000 and putting the housemates on meal replacement shakes (which a lot of them such as Travis got on their high horse about). I'll provide the link to the episode, there is no specific time stamp for it, as the entire episode is centred around the issue.

I really have to say your progress is truly amazing. It must feel so weird to finally be at the final series. I’m still on ‘05, but honestly impressive. For me 2014, was production wise, fucking trash. Cast wise, meh. The moment Gemma was ostracised, was when everything went so far downhill. But a lot of this cast feels so irrelevant except for Skye, Travis maybe even Jason. Oh and Ryan winning was the most flat feeling I’ve had finishing a series of anything. It’s basically 2008’s very questionable cousin lmao

Agree.
2014 was the first ever season I abandoned ship about a third of the way through. Completely uninspiring on so many levels.

This is difficult and probably unpopular to say and articulate properly. Ive re-read the thread since Im watching 2006 and came across the Michael v gretal argument.
I have the greatest respect for gretal. Her intelligence and insight . Her ability to transition seamlessly. But....
She has an ingrained superiority complex. No doubt compared to Sonia she is a much more intelligent host. But I dont think she ever was particularly balanced and had inherent biases. Sonia, for all her faults, let the river flow. That may be boring I agree but its fair. Its time for the housemates to tell their story not act as judge and jury as to their responses. Questioning them on their responses is fine up to a point. But to go into full argumentative mode is not the role of a host. Its not up to the host to have inherent biases, cast basically snooty asides but in fact to be ruthlessly unbiased to the best of their ability.
She lost her cool. In a nutshell. No other way to describe it. She is beyond capable as a thinking woman but not fair and equitable in dealing with housemates due to her self-beliefs. This is not host material. It could be and she is more than capable but she is such a strong willed intelligent woman she forgets her place as host..Personal bias should never enter into her role. The obvious man-hating is excusable as its almost parody.
But to lose her cool demeans her superb qualities. It simply shouldnt ever happen.
I am sure saxon agrees.

Almost a week through 2014 as well. Australia loves pulling out world firsts huh? How funny is it that they teased the pairs thing as a world first when BBUS13 did it literally 3 years prior. That isn't a long time? It would be fresh in any person's mind that knew about the international versions of the show. I hated the idea of the twist on Australian Big Brother and I hate the twist on BBUS as well.

Also how ugly was the theme :vomit::vomit::vomit:
I'm not sure anything they built up as a "world first" actually was. The only truly original thing they did was the two house twist in BB3, which if anything they downplayed in the build up and IIRC only revealed on the launch show itself. Indeed they did it so well that nearly 20 years on no version has come anywhere near close to successfully replicating it. There have been a few "two house" series around the world but it's always been one house just split in two or a second house which gets completely shut down rather than the concept of two houses merging into one. It's the one twist I've always been annoyed that BBUK didn't do first - would have been perfect for our BB4 in 2003 after the rich/poor divide in BB3.

Back to "World Firsts" though and never understood the promotion behind that, especially when it isn't. Most viewers won't really care as they don't watch anything other than the Aussie show, anyone who does track the show internationally will be the first to spot when they don't live up to their promises. I see other shows in Australia still do it today - most recently The Voice: Generations, where "world first" seemed to be shorthand for "an idea so rubbish no other country wanted to do it".

I don't think many will disagree that Gretel handled Michael so badly - it was the beginning of the end for her and perhaps a sign she wasn't loving hosting the show in the way she once did and was letting personal opinion come ahead of being professional.

Sonia was terrible on the Nine version but she doesn't seem so bad on what Seven serve up as Big Brother. Whether that's because there is so much wrong with it the host is way down the list or because the format here of talking to the housemates from an empty studio suits her better than running a live show in an auditorium I don't know, plus of course there are no follow up interviews at all to test that side of her skill set anymore.

VIP had online-only exit interviews with Sonia outside the house that were just as forced as any interview she did on Nine.

Another bonus of the show being pre-recorded, they don't have to worry about Sonia reading out instructions on the auto-cue instead of just doing them. She's so damn clueless in the clip below that she doesn't even realise that she's read something that doesn't make any sense.

I remember fucking watching that and just cringing...

Ok that is so damn hilarious. Possibly even the highlight of the entire season.

I think Ed definitely lasted much longer than he deserved. If he wasn’t with Jade he would’ve sunk much earlier. Maybe even earlier than Tully did. I think out of Matt, Caleb and Ed I would’ve preferred Caleb to of stayed towards the end. The other two didn’t offer much at all.

Ed from memory was an example of a housemate that didn't add much, but he didn't detract anything.

Am I correct in remembering that Jade was a bit pushy with the relationship and it was somewhat difficult to tell if Ed actually liked her?

Yeah it was hard to tell if Ed liked her or not. Jade was pushy for sure. I think once Ed lost all of his friends is when he went all in with the Jade relationship. If he didn’t he would’ve left very early on

IMO It was easy to tell he didn’t like her, he wanted to ghost her but didn’t have the luxury and he didn’t want to look like a jerk by turning her down. At least they gave it a small attempt out of the house. Like for a couple of weeks anyway, but when he could finally escape her he didn’t take the opportunity. Maybe her coming second and having a big fanbase and possibly having media opportunities made her more appealing to him.

Brief observation whilst ploughing through 2006 season.
Dino is an absolute dick. Arrogant. Passive-aggressive. Misogynist. And an absolute non-alpha type despite thinking he is.
Just an absolute non-event.

Took the words right out of my mouth.

I guess there's a reason I was making Misery theme photoshops at the time.

I would love to get an inside account of exactly how relationships tend to work in the house. Is it more just friends and some affection? Then they get out band and after then feel like there's nothing really there? Or do they even bother? It's got to be such a strange environment in the BB house.
