BBAU Rewatch

Naturally 2013 had its flaws - a lot of contrived storytelling, reduced Daily Shows, increased network interference, “Ben From Brisbane” (🤮), Sonia, etc etc - but if you can put all that aside, I honestly think it’s one of (if not the) best season we got in Aus since the 2001-2007 days. The cast was impeccable. Plus, it gave us two of the best “game playing” HMs from the original format in the form of Tim and Tahan.

Interestingly, this season also seems to be a HUGE hit with overseas viewers from what I’ve read online over the years.
My issue with it at the time was that the storyline was the same thing repeated for weeks on end. Jade liked Ed, Drew like Tully, Tim was an antagonist, Ben was babied by housemates and production, Katie and Lucy vs Tahan, Jade vs Tahan, Mikkayla vs Than ect. I hated that there was no Sunday show, showdown was a disappointment and the schedule change annoyed me.

I remember liking the longer episodes for live viewing, but they'll be tedious on a watch. At the time I disliked the cast and was disappointed in the final three, but I expect to fully change my view. I can appreciate Tahan and Tim now, Jade not so much. I did although like the addition of the late night feast. Drew was also a sexual awakening for me. Keen to see my thoughts, and this will also be important to watch for the next season.

That woman 100% had people paying a lot of $$$ to keep her in the house. She, along with Ben, made me feel sick all season. Both top the list of some of the cringiest HMs ever, imo.
I never understood how she got so far. I expected her to make it to the last few weeks at absolute best. But to come second by 2%? how? I remember the eviction where Madeline left and Jade got 52% and I was so confused as to how my head was hurting.

Ben I thought was too heavily favoured. Matt got a super hero birthday and Ben got to meet Bert and Patti newton, I don't think we need to speculate on who production liked more.

The way she fawned over Ed, and was completely clueless to him not feeling the same way back, was hideous. Screwed up his game as a result, too.

Ugh yes Jade was so cringe with her obsession with Ed and hugely inflated ego, but she had so many fans on here I remember, I guess this translated to the real world. I definitely underestimated her, not sure what got her so far. Maybe people identified with her dagginess or something.

Kind of surprised to see she is sort of a working actor in Hollywood.

Hmm. I think a teen fanbase only partially had something to do with it, as well as both Tahan and Tim being more polarising characters when it came to the finale. However, when I re-watched the season during lockdown, I feel like I recall there being something mentioned or seen either in the house or at an eviction show that alluded to her family being very large, rather wealthy and very supportive (possibly with funding from her dad in Italy?). Maybe @Zcsund1234 will be able to confirm as the season progresses, but for some reason I don’t remember the “general Australian voting audience” being the sole backing for why Jade made it as far as she did. There was more to it, I believe.

And yes, she was obsessed with fame/becoming an actress even back then. I’m also surprised she has been in as many legitimate films and TV shows as she has been.

Ah interesting. I am curious about this update now too, her dad certainly appeared to be living the good life and I very vaguely remember he had some type of connection, so yes this might make sense. I never really know if such a thing could get someone over the line but maybe it nearly did with Jade.

Good for her with the acting career really, I mean I wouldn’t say she has made it but she has actually done very well. I didn’t have high hopes for her. I remember she told Drew her job was an actress but at that point she had one minor credit to her name.

TBH not sure he had much game in the first place. Indeed didn't he spend the season trying to make out like he had some masterplan to unleash and of course nothing ever came of it.

Yeah, his stupid nonexistent deck of cards. I hated Ed. I didn't not find him interesting at all and waited VERY PATIENTLY for 94 long days to see him leave. Was never attracted to him either. Him and Jade are probably the worst showmance the show has had.

Finished up with 2012 and wow that was a strange experience. I have always looked at this season as one of my favourites. However, jumping from the channel ten seasons straight to this one, I am very underwhelmed. This is the first season of Big Brother that I experienced live so for me it has always been a huge thing. But in all honesty, I felt like I got more out of the old seasons on YouTube than I did when watching 2012 during the initial broadcast. The biggest thing that I can say I noticed is how much less of an event it felt like than the previous seasons. It feels more like a generic reality TV show than Big Brother the mother of all reality TV shows. I feel like Channel nine didn't put as much effort and confidence into the show as they should have and could have. Missed opportunities by not utilising GO and online engagement enough. The evictees were never heard from after their eviction interviews, the atmosphere of the crowd was significantly less eventful than previously seen and the entire series felt like there was an invisible fourth wall was placed upon the show to make it feel like a literal TV show rather than a broadcasted event. The stage was too similar to the modern UK one, the lack of eviction plank took away from the exciting evictions, a lot of wasted space behind Sonia on stage and not enough footage shown outside the daily shows. I missed the family interviews which did a lot previously to remind audiences that we were watching real people, and I feel like Mike Goldman was not utilised enough in the series. It was a decent attempt nonetheless but was pretty flat when watching the other seasons immediately before it. In some ways, a decent step up from 2008, the increase in ratings was well deserved even if to be expected regardless.

I remember the hype before the season being huge. Seeing that first promo air on TV was a moment I'll never forget. My mum, who I have already said to be a big Big Brother fan, was so excited. I had watched my parents separate so it was nice to see her look forward to something. I remember sitting in bed for months with her and my sister as we looked back at visiting the house, watched clips of the show on YouTube and spent hours looking for a video of Julia Gillard shuffling that was used in a promo. To this very day, I can never listen to Party Rock Anthem without ever being taken back to that moment in time. Whilst I did love the season at the time I think my love for it comes from the memories I have associated with Big Brother and what I thought was to come, not so much the quality of the season itself. I was heavily invested in it though when it was airing. I would go to school and sit in class on the website, I'd come home and watch the live update clips for the hours in between the episodes. I would go to school the next morning and discuss it with friends and talk about it whenever I went to family events. I was obsessed. The idea that a group of people were in the house at dreamworld again that I visited when I was four was such a big deal to me. However, I can see why many people including my mum were disappointed with a lot of the changes. The biggest one I heard my family complain about was the lack of live feeds. The decision to not go through with the adult show was a mistake and confidential was a waste of time that ended up being nothing else but extra daily show footage. Whilst it isn't a perfect season, I will always love it for the enjoyment it offered me.

Sonia was and still is, a very weak successor to Gretel Killeen. I think that's been discussed enough here there and everywhere already. Sonia is just not as strong and skilled at presenting as Gretel is/was. Gretel asked more daring questions whilst Sonia played it safe. Gretel was better at controlling the crowd whilst Sonia was never put in a situation where she needed to demonstrate this ability or lack thereof. She spent too much time telling an awkward joke, standing and overdoing it with smiling and also talking to the camera as if she was taking to a class of grade preps. Don't get me wrong, I think she is a nice person. She was a lot kinder to the housemates than Gretel could be, and I truly do believe Sonia is a big fan and supporter of Big Brother. During BB's time off-air the second time, she always defended the show and was a huge proponent of its return. I do not doubt that she does share the same passion for the show that Gretel had, whether or not she could exercise that as well as Gretel did isn't really much of a question that needs answering. I think Sonia knows that she had big shoes to fill and she did do somewhat of a decent job of it, she just isn't fit for the show.

The format was decently great. The same from the previous seasons with slight readjustments. The nomination points allocation was an interesting one that didn't have a huge impact on the results in any way but still on paper is a good idea. Vote to save was a desperately needed change that aided the show in avoiding slow weeks at the end like a lot of the earlier seasons had experienced. There was minimal messing around with the nominations apart from the superpower which was interesting and at least added something new. The captain's challenges were a tad unnecessary and it would have been fun to see them done in the FNL area rather than seeing the area wasted, even if it meant prerecording a small segment.

The secrets twist was underwhelming and many of the housemate's secrets ended up being of no relevance to the show once the twist ended. It would have been more fun for the secrets to having more of a lasting impact for longer in the show, but I don't even have an idea or suggestion in my head to assist that. The tasks were pretty fucking stupid just like BB8. They didn't do much for team building exercises and weren't personality exposing as much as they could have been. If anything the House 2 and Red/Blue tasks were the only ones that exposed parts of their personalities. The season was also way too gimmicky for my liking. Surly the fish, the executive bathroom, secret missions, the Gangnam style promo and the nominations chamber were all things I could have done without. The naughty corner was funny at least. And there was also way too much contact with the outside world for some housemates, whether that be through them being told the public voted for them to receive a message or even Sonia telling them who got the most votes. I prefer the housemates to have as minimal information as possible. I am left unsure about how I feel about the secrets special at the end as well as the family members nominating. It was a fun process to watch at the end of each series, but also I feel these are things housemates should experience after the show is over.

The cast was amazing to me the first time around. I remember loving several members and struggling to pick one as a winner, as I would have been happy with several outcomes. But this time, I feel like whilst a lot of them were entertaining and had likeable qualities, they are a very unlikeable bunch with major negative undertones. What started as fun ended up being really nasty and I can't ignore it. The bullying of Estelle and the isolation of the outsiders was not fun to watch and made me feel uneasy at most points in the season. Bradley and Estelle were very quickly dismissed by the house and were repeatedly nominated again and again and only joined by a few varying extra members along the way. I don't enjoy seasons of Survivor where the majority tribe pagongs the other tribe, and in a similar vein, I didn't like watching a group of people become too comfortable with their position in the house to self appoint themselves as the good guys. But what makes it harder for me is that I didn't really like a lot of the outsiders as housemates all that much and that some of these nasty people actually had likeable aspects to them that made me favour them. I don't like how I feel about some of these people so the season leaves me feeling a bit uneasy about how to assess a lot of the housemates. I am extremely disappointed to realise how oblivious I was to the nastiness and that I wrote off some good housemates like Ray and Estelle because the popular group did, and at the time I liked the popular group, so it seems I followed what they wanted to audience to believe.

I think that sums up my thoughts decently well. In short, I am disappointed in the series after rewatching it and my opinion on it has decreased a lot. That isn't to say I didn't enjoy it, I just am now very much aware of a lot of the ugliness that I didn't take notice of at the time. It's not a bad season of Big Brother when watching it, it's not a bad season of reality TV either. The main issue is the lack of effort that was put into it and the family-friendly approach. In time I may watch this again without watching the TEN series first and I might enjoy it more than I did this time. But for now, I feel the series didn't live up to the hype that built up when the reboot was announced. But I would also take this over the modern format any day. I did enjoy watching it as a whole, I was never bored. But I had way more fun watching the older seasons. Hopefully, I enjoy 2013 a lot more, both will be key to remember for the 2022 season. At this point, I am not even expecting any news about the new season any time soon. That wraps up my thoughts, if there's anything I missed it's more than likely referenced in my housemates thoughts.

Charne: She had barely any storyline throughout her short run on the show. I don’t have much of an opinion on her that is worth mentioning. She was very clearly going to be evicted but probably would have survived over Estelle in the early years of the show. Her secret was definitely the most obvious amongst the females.

Ryan: The show really painted him to be such an idiot. I mean, he was edited to look ridiculously stupid, I’m not sure if I believe that he is stupid or if I don’t believe that he was actually the dux of his school. The love triangle between him, Estelle and Bradley was something, I don’t really know if I care for it or not, but it was a particularly strong narrative in the early days, so he at least provided something. I’m not into the stock standard model look so he didn’t do anything for me personality wise or looks wise for entertainment value. He was treated pretty horribly by most of the housemates, he was the first major victim of being bitched about. Not much there to point out about his personality, however.

Sarah: When I watched this series at the time, I did like her, for reasons I can’t explain. But this time I found her extremely irritating. I had to cover my face at times listening to her give unsolicited advice. She constantly needed to throw in her two cents worth, even if the person she was speaking to wasn’t even paying full attention to her. Standard case of her being an older person within a younger group who didn’t really have much in common with the main clique. Her overreaction to the Ray incident, taking of the moral high ground and persistence in others agreeing with her did so much damage to my opinion of her. She definitely would not do well in either voting formats or even the strategic format.

Ray: I have grown to appreciate him a lot more now than when I was watching this live. I never hated him, never loved him either, I just felt that he wasn’t someone I cared too much about, but I admittedly was annoyed when he got evicted due to his contribution to the show. I feel somewhat the same now, I was annoyed he left early but I now like his character a lot more. I don’t find him that attractive (despite the popular belief on here) but I have learnt to acknowledge that he was a good television character. I used to feel icky about him not getting along with Benjamin and I pigeonholed him as being homophonic, but that isn’t the case at all watching it back. I would say he tried harder with Benjamin than Benjamin did with him. He was very good value to the house as he had the popular group extremely threatened which did provide them with an obstacle to overcome. I did enjoy the producers rewarding him during tasks which pissed off many of the housemates. He was a really great character in my opinion that could have done the show better if he stayed longer. He isn’t normally the type of character I warm to usually; but in this instance I feel he was necessary for the storyline to stop being lopsided. I remember being shocked he got the most votes in week 4 and then the fewest the next week, and the same feelings apply today. Maybe the fans were overconfident in him being saved, or possibly Estelle’s friendship with Ava had led to a spike in sympathy very early on. Either way, Ray was a great character that I have a newfound appreciation for.

George: He was there, hooked up with Layla for a bit and was a millionaire. That is all there was to him. I’ve always remembered him as boring, and I didn’t change my opinion of him this time at all in any way. Sure, he’s a nice guy who worked hard to give back to his family, but he did nothing to make good television. There is probably more to say about his secret than there is about him.

Ava: As boring as she was as a person, she did actually have a great impact and did very much so intrude on the house dynamics. On the positive side, she provided Estelle with a friend that she deserved, but this also did greatly make Estelle’s alienation from the others greatly apparent. More so than it was in the beginning anyway. But for Josh, she destroyed his likeability for a brief moment and interfered with the fun that Michael and Josh were having. And much to Michael’s dismay got in the way of his game plan. She did well for the narrative changing but it wasn’t a very likeable narrative change in any way. I was extremely happy when she left which gave Josh and Michael’s bromance life again. She was also very hard to get to know as she was very closed off and too vague when she was engaging in conversations with others about her life outside the house. So yeah, she provided something to the narrative, but as a character herself, she wasn’t great in any way, shape or form.

Bradley: I remember really disliking him at the time, a lot actually. Much like Ben from 2008, I disliked his wanting to impress the boys with his jokes and snide remarks. But Bradley did this in such a way that he ended up being incredibly condescending and came across as very socially inept. Whilst I still did find him incredibly irritating at points, I actually did feel some sympathy for him this time around and didn’t hate him as much as I did. Maybe when I was younger, I disliked him because I didn’t like to see “nerds” on TV. After all, I felt like I was one at school and it was possibly too close to home? Even though I hate watching the younger guys try to act like the cool group, he was young and wanted to be accepted in the group, so I understand why he did everything he did and why he was the way he was. I can understand the appeal of liking the nerdy guy having his first kiss, learning how to be a nineteen-year-old by older peers, the love triangle with Estelle and also the sympathy vote for him having a stutter. He had some endearing qualities, but it didn’t end up winning me over personally. I don’t think he was in any way horrible or nasty, he was just very young and wanted to gain the approval of popular housemates such as Josh, Michael and Stacey.

Funnily enough, I did think he was bullied at the time, but in fairness, I now just think the other housemates felt like he was hard to live with. It is strange to me that housemates were able to tell Bradley to his face their issues with him, but it took weeks for them to do it with Estelle or didn’t at all. Credit to Bradley though, he took being nominated so much very well and was able to face conflict with other housemates extremely level headedly for his age. Whilst Bradley’s storyline had intrigue, it was clearly something that viewers got over very quickly, so I’m still not surprised he got evicted when he did. On the rewatch I realised that he wasn’t as big of a character as I remembered. In the beginning, he was huge, but he slowly starts to get less and less airtime as the weeks went on. Now I feel like he got evicted because of lack of airtime rather than him being unlikeable, or a possible mixture of both.

Josh: I loved him originally and I still do love him after rewatching. Yes, I know he wasn’t the loudest or most complex character on the show, but I personally found him to be both likeable and entertaining. For the last few series, the token hot guy was either an asshole or really boring, but Josh was neither. He provided laughs throughout the show and was laid back and extremely open-minded. I can see why the housemates generally did like him and didn’t nominate him, and why he would have been a candidate to win. He wasn’t as bad with the bitching as much as his friends in the house were, he still made efforts with the outsides or at least was cordial with them at worst. Josh was the good guy amongst the group of villains that controlled the series. The only negative point for him was his relationship with Ava. Too much kissing, yuck. But that only lasted a short while anyway. I really did appreciate him taking Bradley under his wing and teaching him how to speak to girls and be more confident. I also loved his friendship with Benjamin, at the time when I watched this as a closeted teen it gave me great comfort to see that there are people like Josh who don’t mind being friends with a gay man, I loved that he wasn’t stuck to the boy's group like previous members of his archetype. I did enjoy his friendship with Michael and Stacey too, they made me laugh. Josh at the very least, kept the bitchy group maintaining some sort of likeability. When he leaves, that almost vanishes. Josh’s departure was detrimental to the likeability of the popular group, and it disrupted the house dynamics in a very nasty way, to the point of the storyline becoming nothing but bitchiness. Him leaving was very sad, he deserved to go out like any other housemate, so it is truly horrible what circumstances he faced. The reaction from the housemates as well as production spoke a lot of how likeable he was. He definitely deserves a second chance in some way, now the time has probably passed, which is a shame. So yeah, I did like him. Nice guy, reasonably funny, very skilled at what he does and very much attractive.

Angie: At the time she was one of my favourites from start to end, I would cheer each time she was saved by the public, but now my opinion on her has possibly lowered more than any housemate I have rewatched so far. As I was a fan of most of those in the popular group I liked her by extension, as I did the first time. There was intrigue between her and Josh which I once again was interested in watching, I also loved her friendships with Layla, and Michael as I did initially. But once Sam entered and she had that massive argument with Layla, I finally came to understand how young and inexperienced she was, how emotionally unstable she was and just how quickly she derailed mentally in the house. She was probably someone who had watched Big Brother and wanted to do it but didn’t fully grasp how emotionally taxing the experience is. I realised at the time that she was polarising, but what shocks me now is that her popularity with the voting public kept stable for almost two months despite how manic she could be. For someone who lived with men, I don’t understand how she was so sensitive to jokes but was more than happy to dish it out. I do acknowledge however that the Big Brother experience is one like no other, and she may just not have been emotionally ready for it. Whether it was an argument, a disagreement or even a discussion, she was either crying, yelling or a mixture of both.

She did make for interesting viewing despite her unlikeable aspects, the fight with Sarah in the early weeks, her bickering with Estelle and wanting to hook up with Josh and Sam only for them to be interested in other girls. The Layla and Sam situation shed so much light on her as a person. She stated she didn’t want to kiss George out of respect for Layla and then said she would not kiss Sam, but then secretly kissed Sam and blew up when she was caught. It was fascinating to watch her be a part of this popular group and be named the main culprit in the segregation of others, only for her to self-implode and eventually became indirectly banished from the group. It was comical to watch her bitch about Estelle who was said to be the most disliked housemate, only for Angie to repeatedly become nominated herself towards her final weeks. I still am really shocked that her popularity took as long as it did to decrease, but her eviction was imminent. She naturally would have left around the time she did anyway if not soon after regardless of what happened. She provided some decent entertainment, was a much larger character than I remembered, and I will give her the credit for being one of the more interesting narrative contributors before the final weeks.

Stacey: She was one of my absolute favourites when this season aired, not only in this series but amongst Big Brother and possibly reality TV as a whole. I really loved her and thought she was hilarious, fun and of great television value. I even met her in 2013 when I lined up for the block open for inspection (I was 2nd in line and made the paper! Can you tell I’m an RTV nut?). I never understood why she was evicted at her first opportunity; I had always pictured her to be a potential winner. I am very sad to say my opinion of her has also changed drastically like many others this season. She was a lot of fun don’t get me wrong, she still made me laugh with her crazy antics and her Kath and Kim style of humour. But I did realise that she did have a very nasty side to her, particularly towards Estelle. Her inclusion in the cool group gifted her with opportune moments to be able to gossip about her fellow housemates, and also at times her closest friends, but mainly her gossip sessions were focused on Estelle. I was so disappointed to notice her little remarks, reactions and general conversations that came from Stacey were largely negative. I have always looked back at her as a character very fondly and whilst I still do, I am in utter shock to come to understand how bitchy she was. There were comments of her flat and out ridiculing Estelle both in the house and even on stage in her interview. Sonia tells her that Estelle received the most votes and Stacey looks at the crowd and exclaims her confusion by saying “Why?”. She then mentions who she thinks will win and says, “I don’t even want to give Estelle the gratification”. I can understand Estelle was hard to live with, but what I don’t get is why Stacey detested her so much.

Being twelve at the time I didn’t have much to do with online forums or betting odds, so all I had to base popularity on was either my own opinion or voting graphs. Therefore, I have spent years trying to rationalise her eviction which confused me enormously. My thoughts were it was just because she got unlucky to be nominated against Benjamin and their votes had split. I thought she was hilarious, and I also disliked Estelle, so my assumption as well as my family’s was that Stacey was going to be the most saved and if anything, Benjamin was in danger. Her eviction caused me so much shock for almost an entire decade. It wasn’t until now that I have come to understand that the audience did notice her behaviour whilst I had turned a blind eye to it. I have also come to think that she survived nominations constantly thanks to her being a part of the in-group, not that she was easy to live with. Whilst there are unlikeable parts I have come to realise about her, I did enjoy her for the majority of her edit. She made me laugh more than anyone on the cast and she was pivotal to some of the major storylines. She is someone I would definitely befriend in real life, same humour, same style of fun. I also won’t take the moral high ground over and say I’ve never bitched about anyone before, although I can’t say I have engaged in gossip that nasty either. I still do like Stacey as a character, if Estelle hadn’t been in the cast, I don’t think she would have come across as bitchy as she was.

Sam: I found him far less interesting this time around than last time, and I used to say he bored me out of my mind. Like Ava, he did have a significant impact when he intruded, but he as a character is nothing special. He is a noteworthy factor in the destruction of Layla and Angie’s friendship, becomes a major figure in the storyline of Layla and also sheds some light on the insecurities of Michael and Benjamin. But once these storylines are started, he isn’t anything major to their continuation apart from just existing. He didn’t have many interesting things to say in the daily shows, wasn’t dynamic and to me was just generically boring. He was a nice guy and easy to like, but did he ever have the chance to be the first intruder to win just like he wanted? No. No way at all. If any fans wanted to vote to prevent the bullies from winning then that support went to Estelle, not him. In my opinion, he also has a similar run to 2007 intruder Daniela and that is that his lengthy stay in the house is much due to circumstance and luck. He or Angie were at risk of going in week 9 if Josh doesn’t leave, he gets saved by Layla in week 11 where he for sure goes. He only lasts so long because he was able to. If he had been an original housemate he may have had more of a chance, but as an intruder, he was in some ways insignificant.

Zoe: She was never someone from this cast that I remembered too much of. I remembered her as being too mediocre to win, but I still liked her enough to remember her. She was more significant to the main storyline than I have given her credit for, but she was a lot nastier than I remembered a lot like the others. Her partaking in the gossiping and exclusion of Estelle was nothing something I had memory of, but it happened. There isn’t too much to actually discuss about her honestly. She is more of a side character for a huge chunk of the series, only to develop an individual storyline later on when she announces her crush on Michael. That actually started off as a silly little thing that I thought was half a joke, until she became extremely bitter towards Estelle for her late relationship with Michael. Jealousy reared its very ugly head in this instance, to the point of Zoe taking this out on Estelle unwarrantedly. I suppose she was jealous of Estelle in more ways than one, she spoke of her insecurities and her lack of luck when it came to relationships. So, her jealousy towards Estelle getting it on with Michael makes sense. But to bash Estelle’s toy horse and break it in plain sight just because Estelle survived eviction? Zoe, how bitter can a person be? Much like Stacey, although I noticed these parts of Zoe, I still liked her. She was a decently nice person apart from the gossipy parts. At the time I was wanting a Michael and Zoe final two, but now I just am okay with her finishing where she did.
