BBAU Rewatch

Haha ah yeah the Perfume task. Perry starts to get under David's skin a little bit here when she wants to use something that he has in his one or something. That kindof simmers beneath the surface culminating in the memorable dummy spit 'I think you're playing the game David' when he almost walked later on.

I also remember there being a Jamie Vs Rob thing that week Rob was evicted and I was thinking that would have been an interesting time for Australia to let Jamie follow Katie right out the door. But no the predictable happened and it was the Intruder who left.

This series took the shortest time to watch through with only 17 days and it shows. The cast overall was very strong and dynamic, even the quieter ones having some sort of storyline. Even then, what I really loved about this is that they thought it was gonna be similar to 01 & 02 when it absolutely wasn’t. The whole first week is what set the tone of the series, “assume nothing… expect anything” and pretty much series to come. The two houses, “get back in the car”, the merge, nominating to stay, housemates going in throughout the week, the intruder swap are all twists that were executed very well. In fact… this whole series was exceptionally executed.
The first thing I noticed is that it took on its own identity. It was subtle things in the way that the house design had completely changed from the likes of the first 2 series. The eviction plank became a thing and is something that I’m very nostalgic of. Gretel saying “It’s time to go…” with a long pause and then the name. Also the graphics changed with BB’s voice becoming a bit stricter and the introduction of secret missions for the housemates.
Speaking of Gretel, this is the series in which she really became comfortable and went knee-deep into taking on the role of “the face of Big Brother Australia”. It’s clear she became much more opinionated and sometimes belligerent, especially with Claire, Ben & Vincent. But even more so with the audience. With saying that, I am appreciative of it because it shows how much she invested herself into Big Brother as a whole. It’s what I enjoy about Gretel, she’s someone who knows how to start a conversation and it shows.

When it comes to the progression of the series. This cast was extremely strong, even though a lot of the louder ones go one by one first off. This is where my likening to the two house twist really came in. Production went all out on it, making both identical to the other. But it also left the housemates in respective houses to have their storylines brew. But the houses became one at the perfect time for those storylines to explode, but new ones to form for weeks to come. The intruder swap beforehand was an interesting concept and a clear rendition of “tribe swaps” in Survivor.

The series went through three different periods. First being “the explosion”, majority of the square house didn’t like Belinda and she became more hated on when the house merged. Ben was “pot-stirring” in which was being revolting especially with the women. So basically it blew up and that was the week Belinda left and Ben got evicted. This left for a new period, “the love square”. This was Joanne and her connections with Vincent, Saxon & Patrick. Also with the addition of intruders Kim & Jamie. Kim was controversy for her jokes as well during this time. The double eviction however erases that storyline and we’re left with the last period “Reggie”. This was basically the march to her win as it had been solidified by a long way. Anouska the BBUK4 first boot came in as a guest which was fun. But I must say, Reggie, Chrissie & Dan as the final 3 was enjoyable. All 3 I liked massively and for many reasons in which I’ll get into later.

Overall, this was a great series that aged well in terms of enjoyment and nostalgia for the older people. This is what I would call a “classic”, as much as it wouldn’t exactly ‘rate well’ in 2022 reality tv standards. It does retrospectively in 2003. The finale was mesmerising to watch, Gretel nearly to tears about announcing Reggie as winner and then for Reggie to think she’s just won a PlayStation. I mean Reggie is a very memorable person in the most amazing way possible. Thoroughly enjoyed this series through and through.

Housemates thoughts incoming soon x

Well, I knew it was coming, but watching this now is completely different to watching it as a young adolescent. The turkey slap. It's a pretty serious topic so I will keep it simple and not go into too much detail as these types of conversations aren't always the best to have on the internet. I've spent many years thinking it was this incident that allowed Camilla to last the distance of the show, I've changed my mind on that but I will admit after watching the day 71 daily show I could not help but feel a huge amount of sympathy for her. Whilst she does describe the incident as playful with no malice intended it is made clear there was a level of discomfort felt and a line had been crossed. My heart breaks for her as I watched her express how guilty she felt. It is a really uncomfortable episode to watch, I didn't find much joy in watching her so upset.

This episode is probably one of the most important as it really reminded me that these people are human and they're feeling emotions at such an amplified level it is impossible to understand or even fathom how they all felt during this, especially Camilla. Hearing them discuss their worries for the boys facing the outside world made me think more about how this is an edited show, people nominate each other but they all still resect one another and feel a bond that takes years to form. It is really unfortunate Camilla had to innocently be put in the middle of this, at 30:19 you can see immediately when Big Brother mentioned the word "incident" she immediately knew what it was referring to. It's heartbreaking to watch someone feel guilty for being honest about a situation due to not wanting to get her friends in more trouble. If it is the case that she gained sympathy from this then I will say this, she rightfully did. Not because she was involved but because of what I learnt of her as a person from it. She showed a real human side to her, a person who thinks of others and sort out to ensure the two boys were not painted in a bad light. I respect her a lot for this and for someone so young she handed herself so well.

I think Big Brother made the right decision in evicting John and Ashley. Regardless how Camilla, the two boys, fans or anyone else views the situation they still broke a cardinal rule of the Big Brother house and he had to act accordingly. For the sake of the show, it would have looked horrible for them to keep them in the house. From a moral, ethical and procedural point of view there was no other option. I understand completely these two boys meant no harm and I feel bad that they had to get themselves into something so serious also so young. Ashley especially, being so young and quiet, I can't imagine the embarrassment he would have felt. It is a really yucky situation that just halts the entire season. The situation is ugly all round and I feel sorry for everyone that was involved. It sucks for Camilla that this is what she is remembered for. It sucks that it messed around with several housemate's final placements and it sucks that it assisted in the death of Big Brother's reputation in Australia.

Being older now I see the severity of the situation more than I did when I was a kid. I remember watching the footage with my mum and not understanding why she was shocked watching it. It does look bad on camera and being in the same age bracket as the three of them it brings a pit to my stomach to think about the consequences they each had to endure after the incident.

My next point may be controversial but in a real sense, like Gretel says about Uncut, the show does to a degree replicate what people are like in real life. People in their twenties tend to joke around when it comes to sexual conversions and actions. Sometimes it's tame and other times lines are crossed. When you cast a series of young horny people and tease the theme of sex stuff like this is probably well likely to occur. Does it make it okay? Absolutely not. But Big Brother is a real-life simulator and these events will occur if you provide the necessary equipment. I always used to say this event was not the show's fault, I used to say production is not in control of what these housemates do. Regardless of that, they still set out a specific cast that was likely to misbehave. It is just a really ugly incident that should never have happened but did, where two young boys made a very stupid decision.

From 12:10 the biggest fight so far happens. Camilla was told by Jamie she can finish her exercise session when dinner is ready which David is preparing. She says to hurry up dinner because she wanted her session to end but David ended up taking it very personal. This argument continues into the entire of the day 75 daily show as well where David has his memorable dummy-spit.

From this point I am really a Camilla supporter. For someone as young as as she is she is able to maturely explain her point behind a person's back as well as to their face. David was a very emotional and sensitive person who struggled to accept that sometimes was in the wrong. He held his morals very highly and whenever they were questioned he took it VERY personally. It appears this whole situation won him A LOT of sympathy as looking at the voting graph he is clearly the person who got 63% to save.

Up to Day 87 and hoping to finish 2006 in a few days. Last few weeks after the turkey slap are very awkward and I'm not really sure if I am enjoying it or not, but I can't help but be very interested in the daily shows still for all the wrong reasons. Since Katie has been evicted I am without someone to really love watching, the awkward feeling after the turkey slap takes a while to ware off and a lot of the remaining housemates at the end are on the quieter side.

I've discussed this before on here but I'll say it again. There did not need to be replacements for John and Ashley at all, there was no reason Day 92 and Day 99 had to 100% both be double evictions. If scheduling was an issue then one could have become and extended special/live show along with an eviction. And the mid-week eviction on Day 95 didn't need to happen either, the rest of the series could have well continued without Chris and Max being added. Gretel herself even said they were never going to win so why add them in? And why did it take a whole week to just notify the two they were going in? I have little knowledge on logistics but to bring in two housemates on the 80th day killed the pacing of the last few weeks.

I haven't watched the last week yet but I remember Claire being a lot more prominent in the daily shows and was really disappointed when she was evicted over the two new boys. It's a shame that vote to evict allowed them both to stay due to the 13 year old kids who voted not remembering the two new guys were eligible to vote for. I used to believe this whole situation changed the entire end boot order, but now I don't think so that much. John was probably going to go shortly after his ejection and Ashley would have lasted until final five at best. Krystal's popularity had seemed to have decline the longer the series went on and it was just a matter of her being nominated against the ride group to finally go. I don't see a scenario where Jamie actually gets enough evict votes to get evicted, so the final 3 was always going to be the final 3. It's just really awkward that Krystal and/or Claire didn't get to keep their secured spot in the final week.

Re The Turkey Slap, I also found they handled 'The Interview' well, without sensationalism or it being marketed as a 'Watch Gretel ask the hard questions EVERYONE wants to ask these boys and really rip into them as they TELL ALL', it was very matter of fact, short little 10 minute aside for John and Ashley to just apologise and explain their dumb mistake that's blown out of control and they meant no harm but now deftnitely understood the gravity of it, and Gretel takes the time to end it on a light note asking them how they are and if they've had a chance to see their family and prepare to re-enter the outside.

Even now, in a post "me too" world, I think young men probably can't quite grasp that this is sexual assault. The whole "we were just joking around" argument is absolute shit. Unless there's consent, keep it in your pants, guys. I don't know whether it's happening now or not, but this stuff needs to be spelled out at school.

They’re finally making it compulsory for school students in Queensland & Victoria to learn about consent in Sex Ed next year. It’s imperative that they learn what is and isn’t acceptable.

Yeah totally. What maybe would have been even more effective would be to have actually shown whatever was said to both of them in that diary room to spell it out for them the seriousness of what happened, but then again there's probably reasons why they couldn't have without breaching something or other code of conduct and in that moment it would have even perhaps still come off to some as Big Brother is trying to grab ratings out of this, blah blah blah.

Its kinda like I would have been very interested to see the footage of how they calmed David down out of wanting to walk after his hissy fit with Perry, but its a grey area of curiosity and mixed ethically on what makes good tv vs genuine insight into things and such I guess too.

Re The Turkey Slap, I also found they handled 'The Interview' well

I did too. Reading whirlpool it seems everyone was expecting Gretel to rip into them and she didn’t. I don’t think there was a need to, just let them say what they have to say and let them apologise which they did. They admitted they did wrong and it was never their intention to hurt Camilla but they still understood the severity of the issue.

The only positive I can find in this is that Camilla was not physically hurt and that the show after accordingly. However, given something similar happened the year prior and with adults only being axed I do wonder if their intentions behind removing them were to do more with the show’s reputation. I’m just glad Gretel didn’t go too hard and make the situation worse, it was well done and it was funny to read people online be shocked and disappointed.

I've just gone back to see how the news broke there, and the reaction to it. If anyone's interested it starts here. It goes for many, many pages. Including quite a few 'it's no big deal, I see worse at parties' kind of comments.
It's extremely long. I wondered why there were so many pages when I started the series, and then I got to the incident and realised it went on for many many pages.

1:17:10 the double eviction had just happened and it was time for Chris and Max to return to the house. Looking at the centerbet odds a the time, also going off what Gretel had said and also what was generally to be expected it appeared no one was anticipating both Claire and Krystal to leave before the newbies. If anything at least one of Chris and Max was expected to be evicted, so it unsurprising to see the two boys feel uncomfortable to return to the house. The reaction from the other three is hilarious, Camilla and David are balling their eyes out crying which must have made Chris and Max feel so shit lmao. They were even apologising.

Now onto the final week which I just feel like I am watching for the sake of finishing now. The voting public are dickheads but there had not been enough time for them to care enough to evict the two new guys over Claire and Chrystal whose evictions were inevitably gonna happen soon at this point.

Yeah I think overall it was handled quite well, and it is definitely something that I find carries more weight over time. And very telling that many people put more blame on Camilla than they did the boys, I remember this narrative all too well and sadly this attitude is still reflected in society amongst many. Not this situation specifically but almost any situation where a woman indicates not having consented.

That was a great moment. It did highlight how kind of pointless those HMs were but I really liked Max so I’m glad he got to go on the show.

Krystal’s hair and makeup at her eviction was honestly terrible, but the next night at the nominations show when left to the professionals she looked so good!

I remember Chris' entry interview too - how he can do things with his tongue piercing or something and Gretel being a bit 'oh... alrighty then' lol. A couple years later I did happen to kiss a guy with a tongue piercing, can confirm its an ...experience haha.

And Camilla finally got what she wanted in an Intruder (a bit of an in house companionship didn't she)?, but a little like the bit bizarre left turn Michael/Estelle fling of 2012 later, it was really late in the piece and It was a little risky for Camilla's image/position in the house too iirc after the turkey slap wasn't it?

I didn’t think it was either when I watched it for the first time. Now watching the footage and seeing it today my opinion has completely changed.
I just watched "the interview" and Gretel was so soft/passive and Ash & John were allowed to whitewash the whole incident as 'boys mucking about' that had been blown out of proportion. I think Gretel should have at least put it to them that their actions were inappropriate and Camilla had not consented to that, and asked if they could understand why they had been removed from the house. The whole "interview" was nothing but carefully curated damage control.

(Here it is for anyone interested):
