BBAU Rewatch

Watch from 1:34:57 in the eviction episode link above. Michael mocks Gretel reading from the auto-cue and she is so angry at him, she really hates him it's so funny.

Also just watched some of the next daily show and at 4:40 David and Dino both openly use the F slur for gay men. I am not really that bothered that it was used, I don't find the word that offensive, I just can't believe it was allowed to be said at 7PM. Maybe times were different in 2006 but there is no way it's allowed to be said today?

Up to Day 48 atm, but I am intrigued to know where this came from. At the beginning of the episode Gretel made a public apology regarding a racist comment made that is offensive to Indigenous people. Obviously wasn’t shown, but only aired during Uplate that previous night. Does anyone have recollection on what that situation was? Did it have to do with Kim, because I also read earlier in this forum that she made racist jokes.

I mean her jokes are definitely something I will elaborate on in my write up when I finish the series though.

Also I seem to recall David nominating Krystal in week 1 despite her and Karen being immune, why didn’t Big Brother pull him up then? Also his reason was silly anyway, that she was still wearing the clothes of her “persona” since she had worn different clothes to usual to help throw people off the scent (or something?), but not like she had other clothes to wear. Why wasn’t BB being strict and authoritative then?

I'm sure this has been discussed on this forum hundreds of times already. Personally, I think Gretel was out of line. I saw the shot in the eviction show before hand and they purposely showed the shot from an angle that looks like they kissed. It is abundantly clear they intended it to look that way and Gretel was just angry they got called out. I love her passion for the show and how quick she was to jump on the defence, it's just she was wrong. It looks like she was told to apologise off camera and was probably told off, Michael handled himself really well.

He was pretty right in pretty much saying let's not pretend RTV doesn't edit things to look a certain way, whilst Gretel is also correct in saying that different angles are picked up and that they can't make the housemates do things, they can only work with the footage they're given but can of course chop and change things around to their best ability. It's pretty funny to see a host converse with someone like this on live TV, so whilst I don't think Gretel had any merit to argue the way she did, I still love her passion and love for the show. I'd rather watch this and have a discussion topic than have someone bland.

Will also add that whilst the show clearly did intend to portray the scene as a kiss, I do agree with Gretel that the housemate shouldn't comment on footage unless they have seen it for themselves and that hear say is not enough to base an argument off.

I suspect as it was instigated by David it gets through but how refreshing to see such a slur and the use of language like that being discussed openly and honestly in a brief segment without the unnecessary outrage associated with it. There is a huge difference between using a word in a derogatory manner and discussing the word being used and sadly in recent years we've seen people, more in BBUK than other versions, be pulled up and even ejected for having fairly mature, adult, conversations about the use of language over the use of individual words when really stigmatising them for such conversations is far worse.

Gretel was very tame with Dino in her interview with him, which was weird given he had been accused of being homophobic and sexist. I fully expected her to go off at him but she was very tame with him. She probably got a stern talking to after the Michael fiasco, she even made a joke in the live show saying she "was very naughty" or something like that.

Jade as the insider was such a waste of time, the more the series progresses the more story lines (which I don't even remember) progress as well. I have no memory of all of Jamie an Katie's issues that stemmed from her insecurities and I don't remember Danielle jumping over the love fence from Dino's side to John's side.

The biggest takeaway I have from this so far is how much I have undersold Camilla as a housemate before this rewatch. I used to say she got 2nd for sympathy, I am yet to see the second half of her journey so I won't rule that out just yet, but I am starting to think she had an army behind her regardless. She is actually quite fantastic, she is opinionated and honest and is always somehow involved in arguments, but it's in some way interesting? I can't help but appreciate it, I am even at the point where if I was to cast an all stars season I am quite high on her being included.

The vote to save system hasn't really changed too much it saved Michael in week 2, probably saved Camilla in week 4 but thats really it so far. The people that have been evicted have almost attracted high save votes as well. On paper the mechanic is a good idea, but in practise the votes for save and evict need to be equal in order for a substantial change to occur. Viewers should have had to cast an evict vote for a save vote and vice versa, otherwise every single week as we saw it was mainly evict votes being cast.

I think I have reached what is the peak of the season right now, Danielle obviously goes next, Katie to follow which will just kill any major enjoyment I have, Rob leaving will be sad as I think he ties Camilla and David well together and then of course the yucky awkward last month where the turkey slap kills it. So I am enjoying it partially, not as much as BB1,3,4 or 5 but I can understand why people would rank this season highly. I just feel a lot of my overall opinions are made up already with still 8 weeks left to watch.

My feelings towards that word are complicated. As someone who was often called the f slur growing up I find it highly offensive. That said as soon as I came out and began feeling confident in my sexuality I divorced myself from any power it had over me. I guess it really depends on the context it’s been used that dictates whether it’s offensive or not.

Yes I never fully bought into Camilla only getting second place due to sympathy. She was nominated and saved so much, I see no reason for her continue along a similar path as Sara Marie or estelle and get very far. Plus I also recall her getting some hate at the time anyway, the usual narrative for women in this situation who speak up, even though it was production and not Camilla who enacted everything.

Jade being the insider was stupid. At least Michael’s tasks actually impacted the house in a way, Jade’s just further ostracised her and made her look like an oddity, and the lure of immunity didn’t mean much when she was already nominated.

I definitely agree. I am very sick of cancel culture, it is a word and for the sake of important discussion it was used to initiate a genuine response from Dino.

It has a lot to do with experience. I for one have had a largely close to 100% positive experience with coming out, the word for me has never been directed at me. I have always heard the word to be used loosely as non-related to homosexuality. So for me it isn't offesnive.

I am enjoying David for most of this watch. It is different hearing about sexual orientation from someone who was closeted in comparison to people like Johnnie or Nathan Morris. David had a lot he seemed to want to get off his chest and it looked like it was freeing for him to be able to do so openly, it's just a shame the other housemates (namely Danielle) didn't understand this and would nominate him for "only having conversations about homosexuality".

I am no longer on that train, she has provided so much content. Even though she did argue a lot and speak her mind she did it in a way that was not grating to a viewer's percetive, so I actually have ended up enjoying her. Do I say I would have preferred her to win? Probably not still, I do like Jamie and I do wish Katie won. I am now up to her eviction week and I am now reminded of the awkward ending to the last 6 weeks of this season.

Understandable. My point wasn’t that you should but just providing another perspective. Remember the majority of the HM’s in this season are my age… Dino’s use of the word speaks to how rampant casual homophobia was at the time.

I understood what you meant. And watching this back the difference in generations is very telling. The casual homophobic comments made by Dino made me sick at times, but in saying that, that is how a lot of people his age tend to speak. Straight guys back then seem to think of the word gay as a loose term. Nowadays people my age would probably judge you.

I agree. Not all uses of the word carry the same weight but I do recognize that most casual uses do have their roots in homophobia. It’s complicated. I’m not going to post anything publicly because the humour can be offensive to some people but I have been known to laugh at its use in the right context from time to time.

I’ve passed a 1/3 of the overall watch of all 11 series. I’m onto Day 65 and hopefully should be finished within the next day or two. Losing Jo, Kim & Saxon one after another really did slow the momentum right down. Then on top of that Jamie going when it should’ve been Vincent. I feel quite bad for Saxon, lost out by only 0.11% between him & Vincent. At this point and has been for quite literally all of the series, it’s very crystal clear that Reggie was gonna win and I’m very happy about it.

Yeah I think I found an article about it over in the newspaper articles thread or back a few pages here. Kim made some bad jokes that caused a kerfluffle.

On Michael, I think he really relished in playing the game, but the way he went about it was very obnoxious. He'd probably do well in the current format. Just rewatching his goodbye message to the housemates really stirred them up even after he left the house.

I also found it kinda weird in basically half of it was very directly 'this person (Gaelan) is under the radar, I'd watch out' and pretty much trying to impart influence on the game from beyond the eviction, Can't remember if there was a rule about that angle but perhaps not seeing as they went through with showing those parts to the Housemates.

He had a point with the whole Gretel Incident on noms too, just could have approached it differently and toned down the guns blazing 'I haven't fully seen it but I believe Its a great showing of EDITING BY BIG BROTHER. DUN DUN DUN....." a little bit to not get Gretel right on the defensive straightaway.

I even IIRC him making a big statement at the post finale interview on Rove about it being a shame the way John and Ashley weren't allowed to be in the finale or something, and Rove pretty much just moved it right along.

Up to day 57 now and I can confirm my opinion on Camilla has changed completely. I don't think I've had a change of opinion on someone this much as yet than I have with her. She was in no way bitchy, unnessariy rude or childish in any way shape or form. She was in-fact the opposite, she was constantly speaking her mind, but never did so in a way to come across as belittling or malicious. Anything she said to housemates behind their back on in the DR she also said to their faces, for a 22 year old she was also extremely level headed and well spoken. She has really impressed me on this re-watch and I am at the point where I feel she should have won against Jamie.

Also losing Katie this early did the series no favours. It's a real shame watching someone self-destruct in a matter of a fortnight, going from front-runner to win to the front-runner to be evicted. She had a poor stretch of episodes with her issues with Jamie as well as her taking her nomination personally. But by the end of the week she calmed down and was back to her normal self, it is such a shame the voting public had already sent so many evict votes her way, and had the series used only vote to save she would have been spared.

Edit: admittedly looking forward to Adults Only finishing up. For live viewing it would have been amazing I'm sure, but after 6 series I just want to be able to watch the Tuesday-Friday daily shows with minimal interruption. And in all honesty, the Uncut show was never to the standard of 2001 again IMHO. 2005 had some great stuff but without Sara-Marie uncut was never as great as it had started off. For a lot of the 2006 Adult's Only episodes it felt like extended scenes that were already shown in the daily shows.

I smashed out the last 2 weeks of BB03 and finished the finale just a few minutes ago. It was the best finale I’ve seen so far on a progressional watch through. The vibes were immaculate. Gretel stunning as always, Reggie & Chrissie best F2 and I’ll add Dan there as F3 as well. I will write up my review and housemates soon. But that’s it I’ve finished technically an era because now I’m onto the Kris Noble era. Which starts with none other than BB04.
