Over this season there was a lot of talk about the lack of rule enforcement by Big Brother, So I thought I would take the fine system that was in place during the 05 and 06 seasons apply it to week 1 of this season.

Fines were handled out for:
  • Talking while Big Brother was talking.
  • Referring to Big Brother as something other than Big Brother.
  • Disrespecting Big Brother.
  • Talking with No microphone,
  • Coving Microphone (with hands).
  • Incorrect use of Microphone (Mic around back or covered with clothes or blankets).

Coner and Micheal were the only Housemates not to be fined.
4 Housemates received 1 fine each.
3 Housemates received 2 fines each.
1 Housemate surprised me with the amount of Fines they received.
1 Housemate received 42% of fines and over 50% more fines then the next housemate.

Abiola = $5K - Incorrect use of mic.
Jane = $5K – Incorrect use of mic.
Allana = $5K - Talking when BB was talking.
ED = $5K - Talking when BB was talking.
Coco = $5K - Referring to BB as something other than BB.

Bruce = $10K – Incorrect use of mic (x2)
Mia = $10K – Talking when BB was talking (x2)
Vinnie = $10k – Talking when BB was talking (x2)

Emily = $20K – Talking when BB was talking (x4)

Holly = $35K – Coving mic (x3), Talking when BB was talking (x3), No Mic (x1)

Colin = $80K – Talking when BB was talking (x6), Referring to BB as something other than BB (X5), No mic (x2), Incorrect use of mic (x2), Disrespecting BB (x1).

Total fines: $190,000
Prize fond at end of week 1: $125,000
Prize fond with fines applied at end of week 1: -$65,000.

Notes:
I did include moments it was clear Big brother asked a Housemate to fix something, I.E: uncover a microphone or put on a microphone.
I only included moments from the live shows and daily shows from WEEK 1.
I tried to be as strict as Nick (Big Brother) was during those two seasons.
I didn’t include any housemates playing up or talking directly to the cameras.
I didn’t include any of Coners ticks. (ticked multiple times while BB was talking)

I love this. Surprise surprise... Colon was the biggest offender. Nice investigative work - and these figures are only from what was aired or streamed too.

Realistically, if this was reimplemented I would assume it would be applied to the shopping budget like in season 7 and not the overall prize fund. Regardless, the show/BB need to be stricter next season. Rule breaks and/or punishments are a huge part of the shows DNA. Omitting them was a strange choice.

The whole point of the original series was that the housemates were encapsulated from the outside world.

Well now we have sanctioned phone calls, photos and letters from their family, family members riding roller coasters and waving to their family (presumably not sanctioned but they decided to include it in the edit which is tantamount to giving it their approval) and they were only in there for a month to begin with not three!

Well the original fines were off $1m so you'd have to reduced the fines to $500 to be comparable.

Although it might be open to producer manipulation if they did reintroduce fines I'd rather see them as "penalty points" added to their nominations tally, or at least removed from the number of points they can award (and if you lose all 5 pts in a week you're automatically nominated!)
