BBAU Rewatch

I remember some drama between the 40 Hour lock-in organizer and myself but can’t remember what we were fighting over.
 
Interesting, so the Big Brother house was in some form of use even during the show's time off air? Or was this a one off?

They still held tours of the house and rented it for special events for a while afterwards. IIRC the 40 hour lock-in was one of the last events held there before it officially closed. Several of the participants commented that the house would be torn down shortly after the event.

The land where the house was built was actually sold to a developer at one point and there was a lot of debate about the fate of the house. The original plans for the site were a Downtown Disney style shopping/entertainment district with a new entry gate for Dreamworld but those plans have long disappeared. In fact much of the information regarding the sale of Dreamworlds excess land that we had during the first hiatus had disappeared. The last time I looked it appeared the sale didn’t actually happen until after Nine had canceled BB.
 
I agree - and for all the faults with Seven they did at least show a new house can offer something different. Of all the problems with the revival the house wasn't one of them.
 
I do like the dreamworld house a lot, mainly because my earliest memory is walking through it on a tour on a family holiday almost 20 years ago. Yes I agree with the family friendly point. The house used by 7 could be a lot better than it is however.

Quickly jumping back (or forward lol) to 2012, up to the Ava eviction. The point I'm about to make is essentially just stating the obvious. If a network is going to commit to Big Brother there needs to be a FULL commitment. Nine was honestly appalling at sticking to a consistent schedule for only three years. I remember watching that Monday daily show that covered three days. On a binge it made it slightly easier to progress but at the time it was strange that there was a change of schedule to accomodate the NRL grand final.

And then not only is there commitment but there needs to be confidence in the show. The 2013/2014 schedules were beyond annoying to keep up with. I guess nine realised X factor was going to do well so they wanted to avoid the live shows clashing. But having evictions midweek just felt wrong when it wasn't a one off. I don't even think changing the 2013 evictions to Wednesdays made a change to the ratings.

I can understand where you’re coming from but I will always appreciate a fresh take over nostalgia.

IMO the Nine era stumbled out of the gate by trying to be nostalgic rather than venturing in to new territory. Going back to the Dreamworld house added to the fact that it felt like they had simply picked up where the previous era had ended.

I'm a sucker for nostalgia. Personally I liked how the nine era took the pick up where we left off approach. Having the same house and similar format sparked so much conversation in the coming months in my household. I learnt so much about the old seasons in a few short weeks from conversations at the dinner table and watching clips online. Some people may have been turned off by the same old same old look of the show, but it worked for me and the people I know.

Nostalgia will always win me over, I can't ignore it. Survivor winners at war too me back to my very early child hood. Watching Boston Rob and Amber again made me feel like if I closed my eyes I'd be four again. The nostalgia hook got me when this new season of Big Brother was announced, but the more time that has passed has actually made me think too much about it and I have quickly realised that the show will still be shit.

I don't mind the fact that the modern show has a new house, I just wished it looked a bit more like a Big Brother house. The VIP/2022 house is a step up, despite minimal effort put in comparison to other houses.
 
The current house lacks the indoor/outdoor connection between living room and the yard/garden. Personally I'd hate the lack of natural light. Having to go down some hallway to find the yard would be really weird.

Trust me the 7 era houses are far from perfect but it has been refreshing to see something different.

Also be thankful the house has proper backyard. The BBCAN house had a small outdoor area that’s only accessible every few days through the indoor “yard” that also doubles as a competition area.

It’s not that I don’t get nostalgia but it all gets a little too same/same after a while. Being a backseat producer it can be a little tough watching the show not living up to the potential you know it has.

For a general audiences of course. I can see why people would be disinterested. Having ASD however makes me prone to enjoy consistency, structured routine and having access to familiarity. I could watch a series of Big Brother structured exactly like BB1 and never get bored. Same house, same format, same structure. If only the rest of the world were like me. But in reality, general people probably do like to see change.

What I hate is the bedroom, bathroom, diary room, red room and eviction room are all set out amongst a hallway like a hotel corridor. Was that intentional to fit in with the VIP theme? Probably not. I also hate how small and cheap looking the backyard is. I like there being one big bedroom. It feels a bit more like a BB house than the 2020/2021 house, but it's still far from perfect.

I understand. In fact learning that you fall on the autism spectrum it all kind of clicked.

As for consistency you’re not alone… Coming from the BBUS fandom there are many hardcore fans that would be happy if the format had few twists and just stuck to the same format year in and year out. To a degree I can appreciate the fact that consistency is what’s kept the show going for as long as it has been.

That said I’ve enjoyed the international format more because it allows for a greater range of ideas and creativity.

The bathroom is a huge improvement on the Manly one. Remember "it's like a Fitness First!"? The yard was always going to be problematic at the Olympic Park location. We're never gong to have an in-ground pool again. I mean, assuming the show doesn't get dumped after this season anyway (which I strongly suspect it will).

I did enjoy the consistency that BBUS has when I watched them all. Essentially the same format, same structure and same house layout every year. It made me extremely easy for me to ease into the show. I was able to binge the entire series in about 6 months. Same with Survivor US. Of course the show has taken on some gimmicks and twists more now than ever, but for the most part, same thing different people each year.

In the 2020 series you could actually see the roofing stick out a bit. It literally looked more like a gym shower. No actually it reminded me of when we had to get changed in those huge ass communal showers after a swimming carnival. Just put some LED lights in there and boom that was there bathroom. The budget was below hell.
