BBAU Rewatch

I know I'm about 16 years too late but, CAMILLA WAS ROBBED!

I feel like I really liked Jamie in the last week or so, if the season had ended a bit earlier I’m not sure he would have won. He was extremely underwhelming. Camilla brought a lot to the show and quite simply the series would have been completely different without her. Jamie brought the relationship and… well that’s probably all. Surely his uncut footage wasn’t enough for him to win?

I think Charne and Ryan were both made to stand during their interviews from memory and then when Sarah was evicted they brought in those stupid barstools. I liked the couch for 2014. Wow, imagine liking something from the 2014 series.
2013 had the high backed chairs like it was some Talk show interview too.

oh wow, that’s pretty wild. I wonder what changed so much? As I said, I found myself suddenly liking him a lot right at the end, but I couldn’t really pinpoint why. I guess the viewing public felt the same.

Judging off the graphs that were being repeatedly shown throughout the finale (thankfully no faces) Camilla received more votes on both the save and evict side. Because the evict votes were factored in she lost. Jamie won much due to the evict votes. A lot of the time he was nominated/faced eviction his voting results were low on both sides of the graph. What that says to me is fans didn’t totally care enough for him to stay or leave and much like previous male winners he floated to a win.

It was really stupid to have vote to save and evict for the finale. I understand it was consistent with the rest of the series but it should have just been vote to win.

But yes makes total sense that Camilla was more polarising so would generate more evict votes.

Plus let’s not forget some saw her as the bad woman who didn’t just let those nice young guys have a laugh 🙄

Yeah vote to evict is completely stupid to have for the finale. It's not even surprising the votes were mostly on the save side. It is a real shame that it worked out like this because she would have won.

Finished with BB6 and I am honestly relieved I have since it took far longer than I expected it to. Like I have said already, my memory of this season was very hazy and didn't remember much about the storylines of the housemates or what they were really like. My simple thoughts on the season are; it's a middle-tier season and is probably baseline for what I consider "good". If a season is better than BB6 then it's a good season to me, if it's worse then it's closer to being considered a bad season. It started very strong but there was so much going on it was a bit difficult to fully be able to focus on what was happening sometimes. I found that due to big characters going very early it resulted in a narrative that is very inconsistent throughout. Anna and Michael go early which ends the argumentative storylines for a while, Danielle, Dino and Katie all go one by one which also stops the storyline of the couples in the middle. And then towards the end, it's all about David.

There was a bit too much focus on certain characters like Katie, David and Camilla at the expense of a lot of people in the cast like Gaelan, John, Ashley, Jamie to a point, Krystal at one point and also Claire. The cast was very young, the average age was at one point 21.6 years which is just younger than I am now. It felt like I was watching a bunch of my friends on a night out for a lot of it due to the petty drama, hooking up and general young person antics. It wasn't too easy however to relate to them, as they were all mostly pretty looking people rather than everyday Aussies. Like 2005 a lot of the focus was on in house drama rather than stories being told by the housemates, which is something I don't really like about the Kris Noble era.

The season is heavy on twists and gimmicks compared to the previous five. The mother-daughter twist was fine, it was better handled than the twins but it eventuated to barely anything. The insider twist, I am not that high on. I think personally it ruined Michael's experience although he didn't seem to mind too much. I feel like in all three of BBUK, BBAU and BBUS the twist harmed Makoksi, Michael and Eric respectively and did worse for their chances at winning than it did any good. IMO, if this sort of twist was to be done the person chosen needs to be a literal mole who agrees to it pre-launch and goes in ineligible to win and is trying to earn money for various tasks. The house tasks were so unmemorable to me, I forgot 75% of them when I was watching, a huge decrease from 05. The gimmicks in the season like truth and lies eviction and the under the radar thing were a waste of time too. There was just a lot of silly stunts that I didn't find necessary.

Gretel was again, very tame for the last two-thirds of the season after the Michael incident. It seems she was forced to apologise to him and made sure for the rest of the season that she "behaved". I think she did a good job of doing so, maybe it's because this cast was so young but she was not as harsh towards them as she had been previously. Mike, Bree and Fitzy were fun on Friday Night Live again, which had more interesting games and themes than the last series and did very well choosing to have the audience for the entire duration. The three of them had great chemistry which I enjoyed.

One thing though that I really hated that I used to love was Big Brother being mean, forceful and strict. The nomination shows became so annoying hearing "what are you trying to say" "you're not being clear" "you're not nominating for others" "get to the point and you're running out of time" "then you should say that" over and over again. Big Brother was such an asshole to the housemates when they were nominating. Telling them off is one thing that added pressure, but to give them extra nomination points is fucking stupid. And I hate that it sometimes changed the result as well. How in the world the housemates didn't just straight up tell him to fuck himself is impressive. Even Gretel would say that he was being harsh and half the time the nominations sounded fine. Don't select a bunch of uneducated kids in their twenties and be shocked when they can't articulate themselves as well as a fifty-year-old executive producer can. Big Brother housemates love creating words like confliction and insuperior lmao. Also, what's the point of fines if they're just gonna win it back again?

The turkey slap also causes a lot of damage to the series which is a shame. It sucked losing John and Ashley not because I particularly cared for them, but just because of how it changed the pacing of the series at the end. John was definitely on his way out next after the intruders and Ashley probably would have been not long after to follow. Had the series continued as per normal, Perry and Darren 100% leave in the same order, John or Ashley is very much next with Claire to follow them out. Krystal probably makes it to fourth but it doesn't change the final 3. Once Katie leaves the final three is set in stone from that point, it was just then waiting for it to reach that point. Although, I am a firm believer in the butterfly effect so who knows what narratives would have formed had John and Ashley stayed. Production handled the situation very well but once it happens the rest of the season just feels awkward. John and Ashley like I have already said didn't even need to be replaced. There didn't need to be two doubles on Day 92 and Day 99. Making one a single would have sufficed, and Day 95 didn't need to have an eviction either. It's an easy fix that could have avoided the season finishing in such a messy way. There is also no reason why a final 3 couldn't have been added if need be. Adding in Chris and Max was a waste in every aspect.

Even though I am saying a lot of negatives about the season, I did still enjoy it. And it's funny, regardless of its controversies I think this is could rate very well today still. If you were to ask me which one of the Channel Ten seasons I have the most confidence in rating well in 2022 I would probably say this season. It's so fast-paced and entertaining throughout and with the increase of housemates the pacing doesn't die before the last week as other seasons did. It's only after the double on Day 92 that leads to the daily shows being a bit slow. Even with the turkey slap I still feel people would watch this season today. Camilla would probably even win in today's world which would give the series a more satisfying conclusion.

Overall, enjoyed the season but didn't love it, just as I expected. I am shocked as I thought by now we'd have more info and promos on 2022. Surely by the time I reach the Channel Nine era we will. I am looking forward to 2007 as I have always loved it, but am sad that this will be the last time I'll get to experience a good Big Brother house. Housemate thoughts are on their way soon!

Tilli: It seems I would have been in the minority of the voting public but I wanted her to stay the most of the 5 nominees in the first week. I don’t think she came across as bitchy as much as the other housemates said during nominations and I would have liked her to stay longer for the rivalry with Anna/Camilla. I feel really bad for her that she was slut shamed for kissing David and copped flak from the ignorant Karen. Sad to see her go early as I think she could have brought more to the series than some of the others who lasted longer.

Elise: She was fine, she wasn’t as boring as I recalled her being. The edit seemed to push pretty hard for fans to keep her. I couldn’t tell with the poor quality of the videos but on the graph, it looked like she got the 2nd or 3rd most save votes and 3rd most evict votes so she pretty much just got screwed by the mathematics of the voting formula. Time after time on reality TV people tend to say cliché things like “I’m usually the one in my group whose loud and fun but in here I am not” and I think Elise just fell victim to not clicking with the group. She may have lasted in a different season but she was put in a cast of very catty, bitchy and sexual individuals so she wasn’t able to let her personality show. If I ever think of someone who Gretel was actually nice to in the interviews, she is probably the first that comes to mind. The poor girl was also a repeated joke on Friday Night live by Fitzy and Mike.

Karen: I thought she was so cool being the hippie mum when I was a kid, now I just think of her as useless casting. She was there for the money, prizes and literally nothing more. I hate when people go on shows without watching it and just go to gain what you can’t in real life, so for me Karen was a huge disappointment. She did nothing but defend her daughter even if it wasn’t warranted and was just a negative presence all-around. Her leaving early was probably better for Krystal long-term.

Anna: In my honest opinion she has recently been so highly regarded by some on this site and by other long-term super fans elsewhere to the point of her going from underrated to overrated. She was fine if anything, she was explosive at minor times but nothing major that no one else hadn’t done. I liked that she called out Camilla for having childish rants and I did also enjoy the game on moles moment, but that’s kind of it? I would have preferred she stayed over some others but really, it’s fine I guess, I’m not kicking and screaming she went out so quickly but I can admit she was a major part of the story, especially in her last week. I did enjoy her and wished she stayed but at the time of writing this I am not unphased as I am satisfied with the drama, she brought in the early days of BB6. Admittingly though, I am interested to see her play the modern game and would love to see how she has changed over time. May her legacy live on thanks to her coining the infamous Australian RTV term “Game on Moles”.

Michael: In all honesty, the daily shows do not highlight his personality as there is so much focus on him completing the insider missions. I liken him to BBUS8 houseguest Eric Stein, who like Michael was appointed a mole type of role that prevented him from making his own decisions. Michael was not able to settle and let the housemates get to know him as he had to constantly be on edge, deceive others and act over the top without wanting to. It is a shame as he is probably one of the more intelligent housemates on Australian Big Brother and would have made a great housemate had he not had to almost put on an act for the show. The housemates and voting public seemed to have taken his actions personality and blamed him when the poor guy had no other option unless he was okay with being evicted. It’s hard to comment on himself as a person because all of his focus was being the insider, he got one week off from it and that was his last week in the house. He hid the toothbrushes and got evicted. I think he went into it with too much of a gameplay focus and forgot about the social aspect of the show, he reminds me of super fans that go into these shows and flame out. Even if he was to go on a more strategic show, playing the way he did would result in him overplaying. He was too in your face and go get 'em from the start to do well or win.

Jade: She is largely forgettable in comparison to how I remembered her last. She had potential but she is one of those people who are so insecure and claims that they don’t let it get the better of them, only for them to actually end up doing so. It is not really fun to watch someone constantly refer to themselves as not conventionally attractive, and there was an awkward time where she thought Michael was flirting with her or she was saying she’s smarter than she appears, and in these instances, she came across as cringeworthy as no one agreed with her. Her being the insider was a waste of time but also ruined her chances of not only surviving nomination but also eviction. She was already struggling in the house but her stupid challenge like the one where she had to sing instead of talk just further ostracised her.

Dino: I used to despise him more than any housemate ever. This was when I was younger and used to also get really over-offended by comments about sexuality. Watching this with an older mindset and also being around 20-21-year old’s (particularly straight men as well), I have learnt to take less offence to Dino. I still think he was a chauvinistic prick who thought his shit didn’t stink, but I ended up not being as happy as I expected myself to be when he was evicted. I remember seeing him leave early the first time and I felt triumphant, but watching this now I found myself unphased. I don’t see him as a complete homophobe now, he was more ignorant if anything and just said the wrong thing without being aware of the impact of his words. I have met many people who remind me of Dino and whilst I do not like this type of character, I don’t hate him as much as I did a decade ago. Whilst this is the archetype I enjoy the least on this show and also the one I could not live with, I still felt sorry for him being played by Danielle and I was happy Gretel was kind to him in his eviction interview. Although in the interview he was shown a clip of Rob and David and he said to Gretel “they’d be cute together” and I cringed. Please, straight men, do not say two guys you conveniently see are cute together.

Danielle: I didn’t really like or dislike her. She was a nice girl who presented herself much older than she was, for an eighteen year she seemed very cool, calm, collected and spoke very well. Apart from the love triangle situation with John and Dino, she didn’t get much else in terms of airtime. I don’t judge an eighteen-year-old girl for going after two different boys, although since it happened inside the house, she could have gone about it differently. She could have at the very least let Dino know she was feeling what she was for John beforehand. It is hard to find justification for defending her but she was young, naïve and in a pressure-cooker situation, so for the same reasons as Glenn from last season I don’t hold it against her. The FNL episode where she had to eat a lot of disgusting food was pretty memorable for her, and also her having to go into the punishment room to clean dentures on her 19th birthday. She had an amazing singing voice and it’s lovely to see she has enjoyed success in her life. Good on her I say.

Katie: Katie has always been and still is my favourite housemate from this season of BBAU. I was always enticed by her quick witty responses and distinct laugh. I also loved how on paper she would seem like a promiscuous, stuck up and bitchy nineteen-year-old, but under the Barbie doll surface she was an innocent, caring and very insecure person, and I’d argue that made her even more relatable than most of the BB6 cast. She was so fun in the first few weeks of the show and she stuck out amongst the group of girls due to her Aussie female larrikin type humour. She had the fun-loving personality like Sara-Marie, the distinctive laugh like Jessica, the naivety like Reggie, the dopiness of Ashalea and the young cheeky personality like Christie. She was a fun mould of all my favourites so far and to me, she was the standout of the show. However, there is one fatal error in Katie that whilst was relatable and raw, it ultimately resulted in her downfall. That being her relationship with Jamie and the insecurity she felt within the relationship.

Her relationship with Jamie started cute, it’s probably the most likeable relationship on BBAU since Jess and Marty and definitely the most complex and entertaining relationship across all eleven main series (to my current memory). However, Katie was entering a relationship as a very inexperienced and insecure young girl who was still finding who she was and wasn’t sure if she was comfortable within herself yet. Compare that to Jamie who was the complete opposite and it resulted in one of the rockier love stories I’ve seen. I felt incredible sympathy for her when she cried after Jamie told her she wasn’t his normal type and called her a barbie girl. She was such an insecure girl to the point where I don’t think she was ready for a long-term boyfriend as she had more self-worth to work on. She was insecure at the idea of any other female talking with Jamie and really did test his patience.

But the major thing I take away with Katie is how she is pretty much the first and only housemate up to this point to be such a clear front runner for the title and completely destroy it in the space of a week. From reading forums online, it seems her popularity had managed to stabilise regardless of her issues with Jamie, but come the week of her nomination she took it so personally and it was this nomination that elucidated just how much of an insecure person she was. It is a shame that this only lasted a few days and she quickly went back to her normal self but the damage had been done and she was set to be evicted from the second lines opened. If she had survived, I think it may have helped her confidence knowing the audience kept her in and she may have been able to win support back, but vote to evict was reigning supreme despite her save votes being higher than Jamie’s and it wasn’t meant to be. She is the first and probably only of my favourites of a reality show to go as early as she did, and I found that once she left the series became mostly uninteresting. I hope she has managed to become more secure in herself today and I do wish there had been an earlier All-Stars season to allow her a second chance.

Lauren: I actually liked her from her VT intro package. She seemed like someone who would have shaken up the house and been a great intruder, it’s just that Darren and Perry were larger personalities than her. I would have liked to have seen her have more of a chance, but instead, she’s probably the most forgettable housemate ever.

Rob: I am a bit surprised at how poor my memory is in regards to Rob’s time in the house. Specifically, I don’t remember him being so bitchy and not getting along with the men as poorly as he did. He was 100% the more entertaining of the first three intruders, but none of them were able to intergrade super well within the house dynamics and were all lined up to get evicted one by one. He did well in being able to bring out more of David, but by the same token, the juxtaposition of the two caused David to look more boring than he did before after a while. Rob was bitchy for many unnecessary reasons which pissed Jamie off the most by the point of their rivalry. He was a fine housemate but didn’t deliver as much as I would have liked him to. I don’t always love watching majorly stereotypically gay housemates, but he was more likeable than I tend to find the archetype. My opinion of him is very neutral and I feel he was just put into the wrong cast for his character.

Ashley: To me, he was probably the housemate I took the least seriously. Other than speaking about his siblings he was probably the least complex character with virtually no storyline. Anytime he was involved in a storyline included him being spoken about by other people rather than him talking. He was Gaelan’s sheep and he liked cars. I think he was a young boy who felt intimated by the large personalities in the house and he hadn’t yet learnt how to overcome that. I’ve met many people who are just like him, he’s also probably the closest to my type in this series. It’s funny, I’ve never remembered him as being attractive but I fell for him when he had grown out a nice mullet hairstyle. He looks like 90% of the guys that live where I am from so, I have learnt to understand him more compared to all those years ago. In regards to the turkey slap incident, I have the least confidence in him being able to deal with the consequences in comparison to John (this is me going off very limited information as well). He must have been so scared and embarrassed to face the outside world. A lot of young boys I hope learnt a lesson from this, it is sad for Ashley that he became a learning curve for young male viewers. But that is how it ended up. I do wonder if he ever found his siblings, I hope he has managed to move on well from the incident.

John: From a narrative perspective it is a shame he left in such an unceremonious way as he had started to become a decently fun character, I guess? He started off very boring and was no more than a boy's group follower. His development finally started (and peaked probably) when he was voted by the public as “under the radar” as well as his storyline with Danielle. I think had he stayed he may have had a decent chance to win the show. When I was younger, I used to think he was really cute and I loved his hair. I think in real life I probably wouldn’t get along with him though lol, he seemed to get a bit grumpy and aggravated at times especially when his friends had been pagonged. In fairness, this did add to his more complex narrative as I was starting to understand finally who he was in the house and who he was friends with. With his large number of punishments, it appeared that Big Brother and production did not like him a lot, as much like Jamie he tended to argue with Big Brother. He made a very stupid decision that caused him to leave so prematurely, and like Ashley, I do hope he managed to deal with it as best as he could. But again, I hope his actions taught young boys about what’s appropriate humour to be shared with females.

Gaelan: I didn’t mind Gaelan on this rewatch. He wasn’t as boring when I tried to look at him as more than a boring figure. He was good fun on Adult’s Only and he was humorous at times on the daily show when they showed him. He was a pretty boy who was funny so he was nothing special or nothing that BB hadn’t shown before, so I can see why the audience didn’t care for him. I think on any other given season he probably could win if he was put in the right cast or was shown more. I think his relationship with Krystal was purely sexual though, they weren’t a very interesting showmance.

Perry: She did very well at literally INTRUDING on the dynamics of the house. She came in with no filter, no off switch and no fucks given and I actually enjoyed her for all of that. Coming from a Greek family I am all too well used to people like Perry. She reminds me of so many women I have met throughout my life and it was relatable for me to watch. I don’t understand why someone as old as she was wanted to go into a house with a bunch of uni student aged strangers, but good on her for getting through and making the most of it. She was extremely patronising, overbearing, condescending, irritating and spoke to them all like she was talking to her children. It started off really annoying as it looked like she was demanding respect from the others and was painfully placing herself on the moral high ground. There was a specific instance when she argued with Darren and she told him not to be cheeky just because he simply disagreed with her, it reminds a lot of the “Karen” generation, who don’t like to be called out or hear truths so they consider it disrespect. Apologies to anyone here who is a “Karen” lol. But in her last week, I really came around to liking Perry and wanted her to stay. I am in awe that David got so much sympathy in the week of his outburst at the expense of Perry, I would have really preferred if anything Krystal went over her. She was turning the house upside down but she was also having a lot of fun this week. She is probably the best intruder of the season and is probably one of my five favourite intruders of all time. I didn’t expect to think this highly of her but I think she helped make the awkward point of the series more fun.

Darren: He was largely very uninteresting as a character on his own. He was very socially unaware and the entire house minus David really hated living with him to the point of it getting really nasty. I think he was just a very young and unaware boy who didn’t know how to behave yet Infront of older people. He was direct when unnecessary and it didn’t help that he was constantly expressionless as well. I found his friendship sort of creepy on David’s end and I think Darren strategically played on it to gain trust from David. I would have liked him to go before Perry but I didn’t care about him that much, he brought out the worst in Camilla as well which made decent TV. I think the audience booing him was a bit much, the poor guy was just a kid but he seemed to manage it well. He, like Perry, did quite literally INTRUDE on the house.

Claire: I know she was a bit quieter and didn’t stick out as much as the other housemates but I genuinely loved Claire. She was to me everything Kate from the last series wasn’t and was painted to be. Claire was straight, nice and simple and I loved her for it. I think she was put into a group of very loud and confrontational people which resulted in her not being able to be highlighted amongst the group. She had her fun moments in the daily shows as well as on uncut which provided me with enough entertainment to like her. I think she is the most deserving housemate of the money on the cast, but not from an entertainment perspective but rather on a human level. She stood up for Dave when he was being ostracised by the others (although he did deserve it) which showed a lot of maturity and loyalty. She must have been incredibly easy to live with to not face eviction for 10 weeks, and to also NEVER be nominated officially in the original line-up. She is one of three housemates (Josh BB9 and Trevor BB4) to never be actually included in the top 3 nominees ever during their stay. She must have been a very likeable housemate to be the only woman to achieve this. On paper she strikes me as someone who could do well in the modern format, the only thing she is lacking is the ability to play actively and she may be too loyal to make strategic decisions. But if she were to ever face a jury vote would have been the biggest threat of the entire cast. The replacement housemate’s scenario robbed her of a place in the final 5 and potentially the final week so that sucks but I liked her a lot, more so than it seems people did at the time. Throw her into another series and she has a very good chance at winning.

Krystal: I grew up hearing about her going in with her mum and having big boobs. Every time I have begun a watch of this season, I go in thinking I may like Krystal and yet, every time I am disappointed with what I watch of her. In the beginning, she is decently likeable and appears as the more mature of the females during their fights. I found myself team Krystal when she was arguing with Anna and I found her decently enjoyable. Once Michael goes and scolds her for her vanity and she is flirting with Gaelan she seemingly disappears from the story for a long while. Having Karen leave early did better for her but was also an underwhelming twist, yet she has no narrative outside of Gaelan and her boobs after her mother departs. Everyone she had a narrative with was evicted early so all that was shown of her was Gaelan flirting with her as well as her being vain. Towards the end when she is nominated again and again, she gets very lucky she was always nominated against someone who was guaranteed to be evicted (Galean, Perry and Darren for example), if she was nominated against Jamie, Camilla and/or David she would have been fucked.

Reading whirlpool and looking at the popularity polls she was disregarded by the public pretty early. She had enough teenage girl support to scrape by but not enough to even come close to winning. Hearing housemates nominate her for wanting something from the show was a bit strange as nothing like this was shown, but when she got shown singing, looking in the mirror and talking about television shows I quickly realised she was the same as her mother. Both seemed not to really be that informed of the show or how it works and were there for fame and prizes. I don’t particularly like that she was all about her appearance and looking pretty, overall, I found her to be very shallow. But sometimes she did surprise me and showed maturity and complexity such as when she roasted David for being condescending. She wasn’t that much of an interesting character, she got lucky throughout the series by being nominated against the right people and yet had the turkey slap not happened she probably still finishes in the top 4. I don’t think she liked Gaelan at all, I think she figured a showmance would benefit her and like others said she also was too nice at times and didn’t get involved in too many fights. I think she was there to play the game hard and wanted to win and/or get as famous as she could. Looking at her now I don’t think she has changed that much as a person, but I’d be interested to see her do Big Brother again. I didn’t really dislike her I just didn’t care a lot for her for the majority of the time. I was again disappointed by her in this watch. Also, whoever told her that her eviction hairdo looked good is a bad friend. Why would you intentionally want to look like a poodle on national TV?

Chris: Due to being an intruder so late he is one of the least memorable housemates. He was a real chauvinistic pig who thought way too much about himself. I thought he was an arrogant asshole who liked the sound of his own voice and flirted with Camilla because she was popular. His comment about overweight women was gross and he opened his mouth too much for my liking. I think I used to think he was cute when I was a teenager and now, I puke at that. I’ve also kissed guys with tongue piercings, it’s nothing special. Him going in like Max so late was such a waste of time like I have already discussed. I still don’t get how he didn’t even attract the most evict votes when he left, did the voting public really not care enough to ensure the winner would be an original? Maybe they were more focused on saving them now that I think about it. I don’t think Chris would have even done well if he was there from the start or was on the next series. He probably would have just been an early boot.

Max: Just like Chris I think him being added into the series late was stupid and sadly ended up wasting his potential to be a decent housemate. He was barely shown in the daily shows and has no storyline or any major contribution to the series as a whole, but he’s decently likeable. He had some sort of innocence and sincerity that was slightly endearing and also has some comical moments. He was a decently likeable presence and whilst it was so clear he was never going to win, I think he could potentially have been a great housemate had he entered at the start or been part of another series.

David: David is a weird one. Now, he is one of the two biggest characters of the season that contributed the most to the storylines and was also one of the most complex and well-developed figures of the cast. I have always been a fan and have argued he should have won the series. I now retract that statement entirely and it is actually David who I associate my lack of memory the most with for this season. I do not remember his arc leading him to such a negative demise. In the beginning, he is very likeable with his coming out scene (which I strongly believe is what kept him alive for 99 days) and was edited with such positivity. However, in the first month or so you can see how out of place he feels in the cast and is nominated a decent amount for being quiet and is said to avoid conversation. It is lucky for him that he came out on the show as it carried him through nominations very easily. Come the entrance of the intruders in the second month and David starts to appear happier to have someone to relate to and it allowed him to feel more comfortable in the house to shine through. Although this is also the point where his friendship with Camilla begins its decline and once Rob is replaced by Darren as David’s friend, he starts to really show his ugly side. Firstly, his crush on David was super creepy to me and I think befriending Darren did worse than any good for him, as it perpetuated his self-inflicted isolation within the group. His argument with Perry and then with the females unleashed a very condescending, sensitive and irrational side to him that I did not like. I don’t like watching someone talk down to younger people and proclaiming their morals to be of superior value and that everyone should do as he does and think as he does and respect that he has been through more than they have.

He was very clearly hung up about his sexuality and fair enough, it’s just he let it define him for a lot of the series and almost seemed to use it as a way to declare himself to be worthy of sympathy from the others. Now it would have been extremely hard to come out at his age compared to myself who was 13. He had a lot he wanted to express and talk about with others that he had bottled up for a while and that I get, but the man never let other people also be victims and needed to remind them all how young and inexperienced at life they are, which I found to be incredibly dismissive. I don’t want to generalize those who live in the country or regional towns, but he seemed to be so out of touch with society and general youth which caused a lot of social barriers for him. He wasn’t able to correctly deal with conflicting opinions that went against his own beliefs or morals and was such an overly sensitive person who thought too highly of himself which caused arguments to get overly nasty. Something as small as an argument about hygiene had him being incredibly condescending so unnecessarily just because he had a different opinion. I really hate condescending behaviour and when people have this holier than thou attitude. It made it really difficult for me to like him in the latter half because of his behaviour. I think he was struggling with having bottled up his sexuality for a long time, as well as not being used to these sorts of social situations and throwing in the general psychological torture that is Big Brother and that is what caused him to act the way he did

I think Bree said it right on Friday Night Live in regards to his reigning popularity despite his sooky-la-la-ness, and that is due to the sympathy of his coming out. From that moment to his eviction, he was consistently one of if not the most popular housemates with the audience and regardless of how he acted he was always going to be protected. In any other series had any other housemate behaved like him they would have been evicted, but he lucked out with sympathy which essentially guaranteed him a top 3 spot. I’m happy he didn’t win, in a way I am also glad he didn’t make the finale. I don’t think he deserved to win despite his contribution to the show. Although, Is he a notable housemate and possible legendary housemate? It’s arguable, yes. I at least appreciate that he is not stereotypically “gay” and that an LGBT representative on the show was someone who people was deemed “straight-acting” which would show people that not all of us are what we’re made out to be like in the media. His reunion with Sharif was cute and did make me cry a little, maybe I’m being too harsh on him and his experience with sexuality really did cause him a lot of mental anguish. I am unphased about him being on BB2022, I feel like unless he has done some growing in the last 16 years, I don’t think he’ll be able to adapt to the strategy side of the show and would be too stuck to his morality. I guess we will find out soon.

Camilla: And now to talk about the rightful winner of BBAU 2006. For most of my rewatch, my opinions have been somewhat the same if not slightly changed, but Camilla is the first person who has completely warped my brain. She is an entirely different character from what I remembered and I can’t believe I have spent so long dismissing her as a great runner-up and great all-time housemate. She used to irritate me greatly and I was one of those who claimed her survival to be achieved through sympathy from the turkey slap. How wrong I was. She starts off very argumentative, abrupt, straight to the point and it’s all very in your face and a bit much. It looked like she was someone who always had to get her way, didn’t like other’s opinions, spoke at people rather than with them, had to turn everything into an argument was just plain and simply a difficult person to warm to. Had I not known the eviction order beforehand I would have bet my last dollar she would have been evicted when Anna went. I would even argue she was dangerously close to being evicted in the first week had the revenge room twist not happened. Looking back, the twist managed to prevent Anna and Camilla from being the first two to be evicted so that is a positive I suppose.

I cannot pinpoint when it is exactly, I started to like her or what it is that made me like her, but I just recall thinking about a month or so in, wow, this girl is so young and yet she is so level headed when she makes her point clear and whatever she says to people she says to their face. In a very bitchy house, especially in the early weeks, she was one of the few who would speak her mind directly to someone as well as behind their back rather than just the latter. She was the catalyst for many storylines and arguments, and funnily enough, she handled them all the best. She brought such a huge amount of entertainment to the show and I have learnt to really appreciate her. The turkey slap did seem to offer her some sympathy but not really anything permanent. She was wildly popular in the popularity polls before the incident had occurred and her save graphs were getting higher and higher (I’m guessing) as the weeks went on. I feel sorry for her that she is remembered for such a horrible reason and I hate that that’s how her experience is cemented as in BBAU lure. Given how often the turkey slap appears again in media she probably faces remembering this quite often still to this day. But as a character I think turkey slap or not, she would have made the finale regardless. It was time for a woman to win again and the fact she didn’t really does suck.

The fact that the woman was nominated 11 of 13 times and faced 11 public votes is pretty insane. 64 nomination points is an insane amount yet she coped extremely well and was self-aware enough to acknowledge she was hard to live and was able to carry on. I think that’s the main reason why I like her, how real and self-aware she was and how she didn’t regret things she said and instead owned them. She was highly complex about her insecurities and I appreciate the raw moments of weakness she offered but was able to climb up again and kept fighting. I am shocked with the complete turnaround in opinion I have of her from this rewatch, this just goes on to show that with age opinions can change and there is still so much I am yet to watch with an older mindset. The series would not have been the same without her and had an all-stars been done around this point I would have loved to have seen her return.
