BBAU Rewatch

I just watched "the interview" and Gretel was so soft/passive and Ash & John were allowed to whitewash the whole incident as 'boys mucking about' that had been blown out of proportion. I think Gretel should have at least put it to them that their actions were inappropriate and Camilla had not consented to that, and asked if they could understand why they had been removed from the house. The whole "interview" was nothing but carefully curated damage control.

(Here it is for anyone interested):

From the Michael incident onward she is very passive in general in the live shows. It looks like she was told off quite sternly and did her best to remain passive for the rest of the season in general.

I think it's pretty obvious this interview was a careful construct, and would have been even regardless of Michael.

Also a reminder of how many assholes there are on Whirlpool. BBBA is a shining beacon by comparison. Even @bleachy_dude would probably agree if he read through the 70-odd pages I just read there. And that's after their uber-militant moderation. Here, there's bugger all.

they're horrible lmao, or were. Every second comment is "cancel BB" "Gretel is a man-hater who will show her manhood this week". For a thread about Big Brother there is a lot of negativity about BB on there.

What about thesnip102 or whatever her name was that would call into the BBBA podcast with some hilarious ramblings, there was also someone about Tony Abbott or something iirc haha? and this was years before he was the Opposition leader and then PM.

At least then they were given the opportunity to defend themselves and in doing so the show kept control of the situation. Nowadays they'd probably be chucked out but the details of why would be kept quiet and they'd never be seen on the show again, leaving it down to speculation to fill in the gaps and any interviews being spun by the press, often leaving the situation ultimately unresolved for all those concerned. The way it was handled back then, which I've no doubt I probably questioned at the time, at least in hindsight drew a line under it for all concerned, most importantly Camilla.

at 43:43 Chris is shown him saying he doesn't like fat women with confidence. He was soooooo red after being shown on the couch with Gretel. As red as a tomato, good he was embarrassed. Asshole.

One thing I find really bullshit in this season is that the first few evictees didn't get a car after being in there almost a month, but the intruders who were in there for 2 or 3 weeks did get a car. I would be so filthy knowing Max and Chris both got a car and all I got was a fucking voucher.

also ROFL at around 1:05:30 Camilla putting on her thong quick after being called to the lounge by BB.

Didn't the first evictees get scooters (motorbikes) or something in one season?

I never understood the giving every evictee a car phase. Clearly a product placement deal I guess but just for me was never the point of the show and even the smaller prizes they used to get weren't really necessary.

It added to the feel of the evictions being real “event” television imo.

Looking at the centerbet odds a the time, also going off what Gretel had said and also what was generally to be expected it appeared no one was anticipating both Claire and Krystal to leave before the newbies. If anything at least one of Chris and Max was expected to be evicted, so it unsurprising to see the two boys feel uncomfortable to return to the house. The reaction from the other three is hilarious, Camilla and David are balling their eyes out crying which must have made Chris and Max feel so shit lmao. They were even apologising.
Max became hugley popular with the public very quickly. He had many Vesna-like traits that the audience found endearing which, in my opinion, had he been in the house longer he'd not only have been a much more widely remembered Housemate but also stood a chance of winning.

I've written about this slightly in my housemates thoughts which I'll post later today after I watch the finale. I can see why he was liked, I too could see endearing qualities that made him distinct. In the daily shows though he wasn't shown a lot. I agree he'd be a great housemate if he was put not a different cast or wasn't an intruder, but I don't fully see the Vesna type qualities. I suppose his voting results don't fully reflect his popularity, obviously the audience wasn't going to give him the win.

Yeah, Tilli-Dino all got scooters. I think Danielle was the first to get a car and everyone else from then on did as well. I can't remember if 2007 had cars, I feel like it was just scooters? IMO if they don't give everyone a car than intruders who go straight way shouldn't get one either.

Personally I agree with @bleachy_dude it did make the eviction feel like a big event. Then the channel nine era just had them stand up and wave which felt awkward and uneventful.

I agree with you. If the initial HMs who lasted until X weeks didn't win a car, then intruders should also have to stay that many weeks to win one (impossible if entering on day 80 though, but that's life).

Just did a quick sample watch of Eviction #1 (Kate) & Eviction #10 (Intruder Michelle)

It went from

Eviction #1
Flip Phone
$200 Cash from Nintendo Wii
Scooter

to Eviction #10
Slide Phone (x2?)
$5000 Cash from Nintendo Wii
Overseas Holiday
New Car

Gretel mentions Michelle has been a fantastic Housemate for Four weeks. I checked Eviction #5 (Susannah) and Theres the Holiday the Cash amount is $2000, the Flip phone and the Scooter.

Watching the 2006 finale. I'm a bit keen to finish this season since its taken me so long in comparison to the rest. BB finales used to feel like such a big event, I really miss it.

Yeah Danielle even trying out music with her cover of 'Underneath The Radar' being this big dance number featuring the Housemates. Harkens back to them trotting out Sirens for 'Don't You Think That It's Strange' in 2001 Finale.

And just 2001 in General. That One at Lisa's Eviction I think I've mentioned where Joanne Accom's back up dancers are giving it their absolute all to 'So Damn Fine' and Lisa + Guest are kinda awkwardly grooving off to the side of stage. lol.

I think more than the finales I miss the lead up to the series and the excitement of the launch more than anything.
I miss that as well, a lot. I spent hours and hours on my laptop or phone going on this website looking at everything in the lead up to the series. A lot of this spent during my high school hours as well lol. I miss it a lot, I miss the event side of it. In my household it was always such a big thing that my extended family would even come over to watch. Reality TV isn't done like it anymore.
