LOL - some dancers are scarier than others, they are meant to scare you - and all bad spirits away.
Generally they only frighten kids, who sit under the yum cha table when they arrive. You are supposed to put your hand in their mouth for good luck

Or it must be a weekday - for Chinese New Year in chinatown does not look like that, you have to plan how to cross roads/lanes/etc...it is packed with thousands & stalls and crap everywhere.
