Don't try calling Justine McKenny, Susan Murray, Dan Grieves or Luke Savage on a Wednesday evening. The four Newtown housemates will be busy hosting Bachie Night.

Channel Ten's reality TV program, The Bachelor Australia, is taken very seriously in the shared house where a roast dinner, "bottle of wine or three" and fierce competition in the game of Bachie accompanies a group viewing of each Wednesday episode.

"It started as a bit of an ironic thing to watch The Bachelor last year," explains their friend and fellow Bachie player Tom Anderson, 30. "To make it more interesting we started to have a flutter on who our top three girls would be, and it became Bachie Night."

The Bachelor: relax and enjoy the sideshow.

The group of nine has this season devised a sweepstake and bonus and penalty system, upping the game's ante. Forfeits depend on presenter Osher Gunsberg's outfit or whether a white rose has been given to one of the show's female contestants. For the Thursday episode, Bachie is played out on the group messaging app, WhatsApp.

"The introduction of the rules take it to another level this year," explains brand manager Justine McKenny, 31. Susan Murray, 29, a nurse, agrees. "It gets very tense, we rile each other up."

Now in its third season, the program is outperforming last year, with viewers up by 29 per cent according to Ten and OzTam. With 1.15 million capital city and regional viewers on August 20, the program is well-watched among younger demographics despite being criticised for being demeaning, non-multicultural and about as far from romantic reality as is possible.

"The program is complete trash, it's not quality viewing, but it's fascinating to imagine why these people do this," said Ms McKenny. "And it's an excuse for us all to get together and sit back and throw around our judgements over who Sam's going to pick and who's going to win in the ultimate battle of love. It makes us all into experts in love – which none of us are."

Her money is on nutritionist Bec, "a dark horse who is playing under the radar". With Thursday's loss of Rachel three Bachie players have slid to the bottom of the leader board.

"It's just such a surreal situation that's being played out," she said. "Can you imagine your best friend pashing someone you've just pashed? They cut each other's grass. It's so unbelievably awkward, it makes for fantastic viewing."

Bachie Rules

  • $20 a head to enter, winner takes all.
  • Each player picks their top three winning ladies after watching no more than two episodes of the show.
  • In the event the winning lady was no-one's top pick, the second, then third choices should be used.
  • Should presenter Osher appear on the program wearing a bowtie, an Osher Scramble immediately takes effect, whereby the first player to text the words "Ditch the bitch" into the Bachie WhatsApp group has the power to make one change to their top three list.
  • Should one of the girls in a player's top three be given a white rose, they are able to make one swap to another player's top three.

Spoiler alert: Did he put a ring on it? The Bachelor's Sarah Mackay could be engaged...but to her ex-boyfriend Jake May and NOT Sam Wood
By Chloe-lee Longhetti and Bianca Soldani for Daily Mail Australia

She's previously said her and her ex-partner, Jake May, were over for good.

But according to Famous Magazine, The Bachelor Australia star Sarah Mackay, 26, and her Defence Force employee ex could very well be engaged.

An insider revealed Jake realised how much he still cares for the blonde beauty when she went on the reality series.

Did he put a ring on it? According to Famous Magazine, The Bachelor Australia star Sarah Mackay, 26, and her Defence Force employee ex Jake May could very well be engaged

'They were together for two years and when she went on the show, he realised how strongly he still felt about her,' the insider reportedly said.

'He has it all planned out,' they added. (all a bit embarassing if she's the eventual winner and pregnant to boot)

Sarah, who is an event manager, made headlines last week about her relationship status.

Former flame: An insider revealed Jake realised how much he cares for Sarah when she went on the show

Woman's Day magazine reported that her friends believed Sarah was still together with Jake when they found out she was on The Bachelor.

They became puzzled when a sister of Sarah posted a picture of her on Facebook on the show.

'I'm so confused, thought your sis had a long time boyfriend...' one wrote.

Another added: 'Are cheating :;)'.

Case of the ex: Sarah was with Jake for two years but recently said the pair were not together

But Sarah shot down the claims, telling the publication the pair had definitely split.

'I was with Jake for two years, and he was really amazing, we just had different goals and dreams,' she said.

Sarah is noticeably absent on Jake's social media, but friends quizzed him in May, asking if he had a new lady love.

Bachelorette: Sarah, who was given the first red rose by Sam on the show, still remains in the competition

For now Sarah, who was given the first red rose by Sam on the show, remains in the competition.

Sam made headlines this week after NW magazine claimed the girl he eventually chooses on the show is already pregnant with his baby.

The reports claim she is around three months pregnant.

EXCLUSIVE coming up at 3:10pm.. Has Heather accidently revealed she is the winner of The #BachelorAu ? @3pmPickup

This has all come from that person who keeps spamming Heather saying she found a friend "and partner" on an interview all over the freaking internet. It was clear to me she was referring to finding a "friend and partner in Sam" on the show (not after it) in that interview but I'm sure the media will all jump on it.

Edit - and oh look, now Sarah is engaged lol.

Does she or doesn't she?

Heather’s love/hate relationship with The Bachelor…

It’s pretty obvious for anyone with eyes that Heather’s time on The Bachelor has been a roller coaster ride of emotions!

One minute she’s all up in Sam’s grill and looking happy as a Bachelorette who’s scored a pash with the man everyone wants to make out with

But the next her face drops and she gets panicky at the mention of one of the other girls forming a connection with the guy she so clearly likes.

No one said going on the show would be easy, but contrary to recent reports that have suggested Heather said she “wouldn’t wish the show on her worst enemy” and that she found the experience “boring,” when we spoke to the 29-year-old brunette, she had nothing but praise for the experience.

“I don’t regret going on the show at all. And I’ve always been the kind of person who said ‘I would never do something like that’ because it’s not my thing. But I just think, everyone has their reasons for whey they do what they do, positive or negative.”

Heather has been spotted looking happy and relaxed and getting out and about recently, and we’re still on the edge of our seats wondering who wins the prize of Sam’s heart. But one thing we do know is – Heather’s got the right attitude despite what happens at the final rose ceremony.

“I’m just enjoying being a part of it. I’m enjoying everything that’s great about it and I’m enjoying everything that’s a little bit more, I guess, scary. I’m just trying to roll with the punches.”

The Bachelor's Heather: "Bullies Won't Beat Me"

They may act like they’re all the best of friends, but it seems more goes on behind-the-scenes between the girls of The Bachelor than meets the eye!

She’s been hailed as the favourite to win over the handsome Sam Wood’s heart – but 29-year-old Heather has revealed that it’s not all peachy in the picturesque mansion, with claims that bitching and backstabbing is rampant among the group of girls.

Speaking exclusively to NW, the brunette bombshell has revealed it’s not the first time she’s had to deal with Mean Girl style behaviour.

The claws came out as soon as Heather was awarded the white rose on the first night.

“I grew up in a little town in Queensland and I was bullied heavily because I didn’t have any money,” the stunner spilled, adding, “I was bullied my whole life.”

Speaking about on-set cattiness between the contestants, the front runner said,

“With bullying comes an amazing gift that is resilience. The comments the girls are making on the show, they’re nothing compared to what I got at school… I don’t let bullies get on top of me now”
