Charlotte, the feminine form of Charles, has a long royal pedigree and became popular in the 18th century when it was the name of George III's queen.

The King bought Buckingham House in 1761 for his wife Queen Charlotte to use as a family home close to St James's Palace - it became known as the Queen's House and is now Buckingham Palace.

Charles is the name of two former Kings and of the Prince of Wales, the princess's grandfather.

Charlotte also has a connection on the duchess's side, as the middle name of her sister Pippa Middleton.

The name stems from a long line in the royal family, including grandparents Prince Charles and the late Princess Diana, great-grandmother Queen Elizabeth and the late Queen Mother.

Charlotte's a nice name, I don't mind it. Definitely prefer it to Alice too.

That's a beautiful and sophisticated name and a lovely tribute to her grandmother and great grandmother. And actually Catherine's middle name is Elizabeth too so really it's perfect.

I have a niece who is 4 named Charlotte Elizabeth, and she is such s little princess. The name has steadily been getting popular, now I think it will permanently be the top name like Emily was for 20 odd years.
 
On the "Sunrise" programme this morning, they were suggesting that maybe the name "Charlotte", was an homage to her Grandfather Charles. A feminine version of his name.

That makes sense.

I love the name, it sounds so pretty. I of course do think of charlotte from Geordie shore, and she is so far from prim and proper it makes me laugh.
