What is it with Big Brother and Gay Men?

Shackles

The pen is mightier than the sword.
First Benjamin, then Ben and now Jason. Why is it that when it comes to the 'goofy ' types of men, Big Brother would choose the gay ones? And worst even, when it comes to attractive men they'd have to be straight? I mean...

Handsome, attractive men: Always the straight ones chosen for the show (besides David06)..

Goofy, campy men: They have to be gay...

Is this some sort of a bias against attractive gay men or are they too afraid to have hot gay men on the show (maybe we're not ready for same sex romance in the house)?

Oh, I was glad we had a lesbian like Tully - a pretty effeminate one until, um, she kinda 'turned' straight and was probably bisexual to begin with rather than a lesbian. :/

I think the reason they chose a feminine lesbian is because they were playing up to the straight male audience.
Again, it's the same thing with the gay men, I think.
We don't want to make the straight male audience uncomfortable, so we make them the goofy, undesirable guys.
They just don't care about their gay viewership, they care about LOOKING like they care.

Mostly, I'm just really tired of them casting a gay dude or two every year yet we never get lesbians unless they're lesbians who are so not-lesbians that even in their promos they say "I like that I don't look like a stereotypical lesbian because it means I still get attention from guys" (Tully).

Ugh i know right. I actually posted this up on FB as well earlier

In case you haven't worked it out yet, Big Brother is all about getting ratings... because if they don't get ratings, they get cancelled.

Ratings are the answer to your question.

I think whether they are attractive or not is up to individual preference. For example, while I despise his attitude, I think Ben 2012 wasn't all that bad looking, at all.

And for example Brad and Michael 2012 as well as Xavier and Rohan 2013 I found all very UNattractive, though straight.

I don't think you can really generalise like that.

I do agree that they could mix it up a bit more with maybe lesbians, transgenders etc but if they find all of their housemates and they're all amazing and great for the show then it doesn't matter what sexuality they are. They could be all straight and it make great entertainment.

I'm a straight married female by the way.

Im sick of being portrayed as an effeminate weird gay man by big brother when I'm not! I can't relate to these weirdo's!

So because a housemate is gay Big Brother is portraying them as a representation of all gay people? Or maybe they are just a housemate who is in there to be entertaining...

it's not Big Brother's job to cast housemates as some sort of representative for whatever minority they may come from, that's extremely shallow to look at it that way. Just enjoy him for being a housemate and stop focusing on his "attractiveness" so much.

There was someone on here in the launch thread saying Jason was selling her house and he was as normal as they come. So he either plays down his gayness for work or hes playing it up for BB?

When I think back to the housemates we have had in the past who are gay, I think we have had quite a broad representation. We have had strong gay men, funny gay men, overweight gay men, effeminate gay men, mean gay men and super hot gay men. To suggest they were all cut from some fairy coloured cloth is bollocks.

Ben and Benjamin are like chalk and cheese with no similarities what so ever outside the fact they both like cock!

You have to remember, as humans we have similar characteristics. We are individual - just like every body else.

I don't particularly like the selection and they don't resonate with me at all.

That FARMER DAVE was okay until he opened his mouth and the Fall 2014 Louis Vuitton collection fell out.

Dave looks terrible up close these days, i was eating at kfc a few weeks ago and he was right next to me. Very haggard looking.

Interesting point. Has any BB had two gays on at one time? BBUSA did with BB9, but one of the men left due to an emergency. We've never really seen a gay romance. However, over here on BBUSA, we did have Zach, who maintained he was straight, hug and lay in bed with Frankie, who is openly gay. Many of us thought they might kiss at some point, but it never happened. It's 2014. It's time to cast more than just one gay guy.

See granted I have low standards and a high libido but if I was a gay man, I would have done no questions needed, Ben 2012, I just loved him, the hairdresser that went in on the Dave the Farmer series (he and I drunk dance the same I swear!!) and Zach, he was super super cute! Three completely different gay men, all with different qualities, yet to me all fuckable.
