The Voice 2014

Even onThe Voice US the winners never go anywhere. I wonder why that is. Obviously they can sing so something else is missing with these people the public picks. And I'll do you one better with these talent shows... not only am I watching a recording of the X-Factor right now but my damn Foxtel lost signal for the first chunk of it so I'm debating whether to stay up and wait for the episode to appear on their website haha.

Yeah I'm not sure what it is with The Voice, it was a juggernaut for ratings but it has failed to transpire into a bonafide music career for anyone. Really Aus Idol didn't produce too many lasting artists, I guess there is Ricki-Lee and Matt Corby, that's pretty much it. Oh and Guy has had some success in the US. That's it I think. X Factor has some equally talented people on it but they seem to have a bit more luck with forging careers, both Samantha Jade and Dami Im have done fairly well. Samantha is talented, but she wasn't necessarily the best singer on the show but she had that sort of star power (really trying to avoid saying x factor here...) so maybe it shows that you need more than "the voice" to make it in the industry, just look at a lot of the popstars out there for proof.

Australian Idol was always about the singer.
With the X -Factor the balance slightly tipped towards the prominence of the coaches, but still the singers are in the limelight.
The Voice is all about the coaches and their profiles. Even though it's called the Voice, the singers basically take the back seat. It rates, that's why the show has continued. But in Australia it is definitely losing it's shine.

That's my 2c anyway.

Guy Sebastian has done quite well by talent competition standards, as has Jess Mauboy, Stan Walker is big in NZ, Ricki-Lee, Matt Corby, Rob Mills has done well in theatre. Dean Geyer was on Glee. Much higher strike rate than the voice.

There's something to say for the 'cattle call' audition methods of Idol and X Factor also. They do really uncover the diamonds in the rough.

The voice approaches agencies and gets people who do have a great voice but for whatever reason have been working in the industry as backing singers or session singers or whatever but have never cracked the big time... There's probably a reason.

Oh yeah I forgot about Jess Mauboy, I guess it's a good sign when I don't even think of her as being part of Idol. You're right, it was all about the singers back then, the judges weren't big stars and they didn't have mentoring roles. I liked the simple format they used, just pick a song that fits the theme of the week and the public votes, The Voice makes things very complex with all their silly rounds, same with X Factor actually. I know Idol had rounds as well, but at least the audience was still involved in most of them.

It is weird that everyone got over Idol but then all these other talent shows took it's place, but I guess it had run its course.[DOUBLEPOST=1405344339][/DOUBLEPOST]

Yes, very good point!

It had run it's course (mind you Ten would kill to have the ratings the final season of idol had, again now).

X factor is a shiny replacement with big production values with the performances. The voice has the button and chair turning gimmick.

Idol was, in one sense, a pure singing competition with few bells and whistles in comparison.

Can you tell I still have a soft spot for Idol :(. I watch the voice but I prefer X Factor with our current choices. X Factor was Simon Cowell's idea on improving the idol format.

I will say though, I don't think ANY reality tv series on Australian TV now live up to the Idol grand finale's. They were major 'event tv' spectacles at the Opera House.

Yes I was just thinking about how massive their finales were in the Opera House and with the huge precession of the finalists, I guess it was the first of it's type in Australia. Channel 10 would've been smarter to reboot idol versus SYTYCD, but I guess there was already saturation with talent shows and Dance offered something a bit different.

What became of Natalie Gauci or Kate D'whatever her name was? I'm amazed I can (semi) recall their names as winners, they definitely didn't have careers. Was Kate possibly in that Young Divas group? I am asking you as seem to be very knowledgable on all things Idol, I could of course just google it.

I probably am the right person to ask. Hehe.

Kate DeAraugo was in Young Divas

Natalie didn't want to be controlled by a big label. She has released some indie stuff here and there over the years.

Disclosure: I was a moderator and administrator for the Official Australian Idol forums for a few years. I then went on to work on Ricki-Lee's forum and as such spent some time with the Young Divas in the time RL was part of the group. I was also 'on air' a couple of times throughout the course of the years of idol. Not singing. But yeah....

I have nothing to back it up, but it feels like females are really getting screwed over on the aussie version of this show.

I feel that way too but I don't think it's a dodgy thing. I think it's just the majority of voters are female and they're getting sucked in by Jackson and Johnny. I can see why people are voting for Frank because he's different but with the other two I'm blaming it on lovestruck females. I'm still a bit shocked that Sabrina's out to be honest.

Yes I agree. It's not rigged, it's just that the voting heavily favours moderately good-looking males. I'm trying to keep my personal preferences out of it but it's a huge injustice that Sabrina is out, whichever way you look at it.

Shocked - but I was sitting there thinking shit, all the little girls are going to mega vote for the young blonde girl this could be a disaster.

And hell she did sing the crap out of that song, and Wil looks like he can't wait to take a Brit Brit who can sing around the world.
But he looks like he wants to swallow sabrina, or put her in his pocket and never let her go.

Sabrina would be a great support act for Ricki's tour.

jackson has to win, doesn't he?

I'm sure there are many females who are lovestruck for Johnny and Jackson. But i don't doubt that many do just love their voices too. I love and I mean love Jackson's voice. I really do get the chills when he sings. Those falsettos, that harmonious sound, the control... It's divine! I vouched for Robbie or him from the beginning and I still do. Whilst Sabrina's voice is amazing, I see why others like myself prefer jackson. His voice affects me

Totally agree! In fact sometimes I prefer not to even watch while they're singing because I like just hearing their voice without being distracted by facial expressions.

Well that sucked.
Wildcard I'm pretty sure was designed for Sabrina, and just stuffed everything.

Take her Wil, for we sure don't have much we can do with her, and please take all those annoying kids with ya (especially robbie).

Team Wil sounded shit singing where is the love, they never let Indigenous guy sing enough, his voice is the nicest.

Somebody please come up with a song writing and producing competition - stop shoving singers at us with nothing to sing.

will's birthday song with his UK winner was dreadful too. I'm not denying he's clever & has a great personality, but please come up with something better than that.

He's pretty big on the RSL circuit I'm told. My mum has been an obsessive Shannon Noll fan since he was on Idol. No joke she follows him around the country going to all of his gigs at pubs and clubs, etc.

OMG I love your mum.
