What happened to having intelligent hm''s

One update mentioned discussions about asylum seekers but no sign of that either. It's all about dumbing down for the viewers.

I believe the commercial channels totally underestimate the intelligence of their viewers- hence the tripe on Current Affair and Today Night. They're pretty much both Jerry Springer in the field and infomercials. Once upon a time they reported on stories and issues that actually meant something to the community.

I'm sure if we'd had live feeds we would have experienced some interesting conversations.

I would love to watch an episode of A Current Affair from the 70s or 80s to see what it was like.

i actually think i am less intelligent than others when there is a problem until, after heated discussions, i fix that problem myself, i use commonsense

Good for you!

However just for your own information, common sense is in fact two separate words.

i don't need to know how to spell as my common sense, (see how i am a quick learner) told me that the BBB personal spell checker TraLa would sweep up behind me. is spell check 2 words? oh the pain of grammar

I actually thought most of the housemates were intelligent with the exception of Ryan, Layla, Ava, George. Charne was actually a normal person which is a first for Big Brother. Sarah and Ray were both socially intelligent and academically Ray is up there. Bradley, Ben, Michael, Angie and Estelle seemed to be the ones who could have adult conversations on a wide range of political topics. Josh and Sam were just normal Australian males and they both seem like nice guys. I think they aren't nesscarily academically smart but they are definitely hard workers on the outside and they are able to have intelligent conversations. I believe that leaves us with Stacey and Zoe. I think Zoe is able to have political and intelligent conversations and I am sure Stacey would be able to as well but she just acts like an idiot to often. These housemates were on of the smartest Australian Big Brother has ever had IMO. Only 2003 and maybe 2006 would be above it IMO. 2003 had many intelligent people but to name a few, Jo, Chrissie, Ben, Pat, Dan. 2006 also had its fair share of intelligent people e.g. David, Michael, Dino, Claire, Camilla, Rob, Elise, Tilli, Max.

we really got to know very little about the housemates except they could bitch. which I'm darn sure didnt go on all the time otherwise they would have killed each other.

I agree with you that both those series had fairly intelligent housemates (i'd say Ben '03, Michael '06 and Tim '05 have been the smartest we've ever had, Ben '2012 could squeeze in too).

Unfortunately both those series had a complete dumbass win and i mean dumber than a bag of hammers type here :(

Reggie was dumb but she was a great housemate. And yes there were so many more deserving winners in 2006 over Jamie IMO. Unfortunately the housemates who were in the running for the win were their own downfall.

While there were some not overly bright housemates and some ones that probably have no opinion at all. The biggest issue was that the alpha housemates created an environment against serious conversation.

You had Michael who didn't have time of day for anyone else's opinion. Claiming authority as a 'genius.' He was then backed up by the leader Josh. If you recall back to early on in the series. Josh made a point to shut down political discussions because he hates when people talk about that. The incident involved Bradley. I also think there was stuff with Angie saying she doesn't want to say anything because she might seem dumb as she doesn't know that much about it.

A big part of Estelle and Bradley's issues early on in the house was that they wanted to talk about it. We saw videos of them talking about all sorts of things. Even how dumb creationists were. However whenever they tried to talk in the group they were shut down by the group leaders. Whenever someone like Estelle wanted to voice her opinion she was bullied and called dumb. We saw glimpses of this happening. However we clearly saw the aftermath of Michael saying how stupid she is because she disagreed with him. Now these clips disappeared early on in the series. Either we weren't shown them or simply they stopped discussing such things.

As the series went on, we also saw a bit of backlash against people like Michael. Didn't Stacey nominate him for knowing so much at one stage?

I also think Ryan had a negative impact because he wanted to try and talk about things which often were a bit out of his depth or wheel house. I think this then discouraged others from venturing out too far into topics they weren't confident in as they didn't want to look dumb.

Just think back to the amount of hatred thrown at Ryan for being dumb. People knew what area's to avoid.

Was there video of that? I remember seeing an update of them talking about religion, but not video. And the first Confidential had some of them talking about ghosts or something and Bradley disagreeing. I remember him and Sarah walking off towards the kitchen with Sarah saying something like "We don't say it quite like that".

The update I read of them talking religion:

Straight to hell

Stacey, Zoe, Bradley, George and Michael gather in the Lounge and chat about recording ‘farewell messages’ to the House.

“I felt bad, but Estelle said she wanted to do a rap and I was like ‘yes, do it!’,” she says.

“Maybe I should do a rap,” she jokes.

The conversation turns to religion, with Bradley, Stacey and Zoe saying they’re adamant atheists.

Bradley tells a story about Ray and Sarah talking about their faith and Ray exclaiming ‘he’s such a cool God!’ and credited his prayer for landing him in the Big Brother House.

“Why would God care about Ray?” laughs Bradley. “There are millions of people starving around the world and he wants to put you in the House?!”

I remember a video of Brad and Estelle in the pool talking about creationists. I think Bradley did an impersonation of one, "i didn't come from no monkey."

Was only really brief. May have just been a video on the official site. I only remember it because it made me like them both.
