I have always wanted to know this cause I can't see how many people who are not fresh out of school and/or living with their mummies and daddies could afford to be broke for 12+ weeks.

Anyone know?

Yes.

They are paid a nominal wage. A couple of years ago it was $500 per week. Not sure what the exact amount is now.

This is to cover rent and other finanical obligations they would still have to meet whilst in the house.

$500 a week ? , is that all ??

Since they are " performing " 24 hours a day it comes to $2.97 an hour.

Gretel told one night us that 2000 votes came in during the last few minutes . @55c each vote it works out at $550 per minute.

They get paid exactly 5c per minute

But they do get some fairly decent prizes.

Wonder if they'll get a car this year?

I would like to see the people who last longer in the series win a better car than the people kicked out in the first couple of weeks. It didn't seem fair that Paul received the same car as Aphrodite last year.

we have this question every year.. so heres what i can remember

they get paid a weekly wage, which is taxed as they are earning their wage through a performance based job.
However, the overall winner does not get taxed on the final prize because it is considered winnings, and winnings are not taxed..

I agree about a better car for the people who last longer. It always seems so unfair that the first couple of people booted get a car when they havent been there long and they're out because everyone hates them!!

I remember something about Jo having to take a pay CUT when she went in the house, as she was working as a solicitor or lawyer or whatever she was at the time.

Correct me if i'm wrong, but i'm pretty sure if you win you still get taxed. I remember there was this big thing about it back in Series 1 and 2, don't remember three but in Series 4 they had the actual amount Trevor would get somewhere.

I'm pretty sure it does get taxed.

it might have gotten taxed, but Trev was payed the full $1,000,000.00 so they probably payed him more but it would have gotten taxed down to the mill

There was talk in the papers last year that ESS had gone through the contracts to word them so the winner avoided tax; the inference was that there had been problems with earlier series.

Frustratingly, the reports didn't spell it all out. (then, again, I guess detailed explanations of tax accountancy doesn't sell a lot of newspapers!)

Yeah and she took another pay cut after getting out of the house , unless bar work in Adelaide pays better than being a so called lawyer . :D

Five hundred dollars a week is probally more than what the majority of them would be getting a week if they were out of the house.

More than Aphro and Merlin were maiking on the dole. Wonder if they had to pay it back?

Does anyone have an update on how much Big Brother 2012 and 2013 contestants get paid per week, if anything?
$500 / week would probably not cover a mortgage these days and electricity and gas and phone etc.

lol. Anyway it's not a wage it's a stipend. They are not being paid to work or even to appear on the show. The money is like a living away from home allowance. $500/week would cover my mortgage and power/gas/phone/internet but probably wouldn't stretch to my strata fees as well. Most HMs are young and probably share flats etc so their costs would be lower. Anyway I'm sure it would be more than $500 now.

Last year it was supposedly around $800/week... but no confirmation on that. Sounds about right though, given cost of living increases.
