Promi Big Brother

Celeb BB Germany returns on Monday for it's 11th season. They've a new house - very much in the style of a classic early series house, really taking it back to basics. The caveat is though they almost always do a rich/poor split so I suspect something more luxurious may be in play as well.

The season actually launched a couple of days ago. The first TV show will be on Monday, but live feeds are back and already on. Housemates are currently moving in. If you have a VPN, set it to Austria and you can watch it here for free. If you set it to Germany, you've got to pay for the feeds.

German users usually prefer a divided house over a single house, so one would indeed expect a second area. But I'm not so sure if there is a second house this time. They've kept houses a secret in the past, but this time they've made a big deal about the fact that there is only one house and that it's a container like it was in the old days. Also, the fact that they've revealed two diary rooms, kinda indicates that there won't be a second house or area. Previous poor areas used to have two diary rooms, too, but they would never acknowledge the second one.. it just looked slightly different. That said though, the entry hall has a second door that could lead to a second house. Might be the games area though.

I'd rather expect some kind of rewards room or HoH room than a proper second house. This year, viewers will be able to vote for a daily "container chef" whose job will be to determine the two houseguests that have to babysit a buzzer in the outside area. It has to be pressed every 10 minutes at night, otherwise Big Brother will turn on the lights in the whole house and play an alarm into the house. It's something they've taken from I'm a Celebrity. At least in Germany, at least two people have to guard the campfire at all times, which usually leads to people bitching about the other campmates.

Live competitions will be used to determine if housemates are allowed to keep their daily shopping. So there isn't really a chance for viewers to send people from the rich house to the poor house like they've done in previous years.

Also maybe worth mentioning: They're currently casting for a new regular 3-month season in Spring 2024. But there has been no channel so far that wanted to confirm that they'll be airing the show next year.

Okay, just seen on the live feeds: The diary rooms are inside and not accessed via the courtyard. This increases the chances of there being a second house behind one of the doors in the courtyard.

It's a new location this year, but still on a studio lot in Cologne. Somewhere in this area, which was previously used for the German soap opera Lindenstraße, kinda our version of EastEnders.

Audience will not be present during the live shows in the evening. The channel said that they don't want to have an audience this year, so that housemates will not be influenced by the cheering.

Also, now I would definitely expect a second house despite all their claims of there being only one house. Housemates were given color-coded jumpers by Big Brother which they have to wear instead of their own clothes. That's what they've done ever since the second season of Celebrity Big Brother: either given them the same outfit or second-hand clothes when they were in the poor part of the house.

Yeah, although I'm not completely sure if they are honest with their reasonings. It's not like German producers ever cared about not influencing housemates, Germany has been one of the worst versions in that regards. It's the country that gave the world family & friends nominations. I suspect that there is no proper infrastructure for having an audience. The lot has never been used for a show involving an audience and there might not be enough parking spaces.

Oh, TV execs are rarely honest with their reasoning. It's usually cost cutting.

I know German TV shows are often hours long anyway but am I right in thinking Sat 1 give 3-4 hours a night to this?

Well.. on Mondays we'll get six hours of Big Brother on TV: Almost 4 hours of the main show with the highlights from the previous day, live competitions and plenty of other filler content. And that's followed by 2 hours of the side show that features live feed from the house plus chat with celebrities and family and friends.

On any other day, the main show will be about 90 minutes - 120 minutes long and will also be followed by 2 hours of the side show.

It depends on the day. On Mondays and Tuesdays, the show airs from 8:15 pm onwards. On the other days it indeed starts between 10:15 and 11:30 except for the Friday before the finale. On that day, the show will start at 11:55 pm, right after the finale of The Voice.

Well, it's actually been slightly longer than 3 weeks in previous years. There were 3 weeks of TV shows, but housemates moved in two days early. Last year, they've gut it down by two days to avoid it clashing with the quarterfinals of the World Cup. This year it's down again to 2 weeks plus 2 days.

But that's actually one of the good things they've done this year: The feeds are back for the first time in seven years and they've turned on the feeds when the first housemate moved in, so we get proper coverage of the first two days in the house. They haven't done that in previous seasons when housemates moved in early and would only show highlights from the first two days.

I think a second house can now be ruled out. They haven't revealed anything yet and all visible doors lead to rooms that have been used by now.

Not so much an update on the season but a reference for anyone that needs to argue why Big Brother needs to have a live feed: This season has the highest ratings since 2019 and overnight viewership is up by 17% on the previous year... and that's despite them doing significantly less promo for the show themselves. All I've seen were a few trailers that were basically a short version of their intro. But they haven't had a dedicated ad campaign for the season launch.

But since the feed is serving them well, they'll decided to broadcast the live feed on TV, too. Every night after the spin-off show until the early morning hours.

Absolutely - almost every version which axes a live feed sees ratings fall and every version that sees it restored sees some recovery in ratings.

If anyone is interested:

I think I've mentioned it somewhere already, but one of the biggest German Twitch streamers (Knossi) currently rents the German Celebrity Big Brother house and produces a 57-hour season along with Endemol Shine. It doesn't follow all rules of Big Brother. All of the housemates (mainly influencers and other streamers) are allowed to keep their phones and check the stream/chat once in a while. Earlier, they've also had the Twitch chat on the TV. It's also quite stunt-driven. Earlier, they were recording their own version of an infamous BB song, that was recorded by two housemates from the first season and then again by this year's celebrity cast. They also have their second visitor right now and there will be at least six more people visiting over the next few days. Housemates will vote for the winner on Thursday and it will probably be Knossi, who invited them all.
