...it had to happen... the garden/plants/terrariums etc thread......

Mr Stickyfingers

an old fart that rants at times...
Awesome site donor
...due to some positive suggestions by others I've started this thread up so that instead of clogging up other threads with gardening stuff etc this might be a better place to post that stuff... this thread will either die a quick death or hang around for a while... either way people need to contribute to it to make it worthwhile... as you all know I'm not shy in showing all of my gardens/terrariums etc at a drop of a hat :smug::whistling::) but it would be great for others to participate too...

...I guess that if nothing else... you guys won't be bombarded with having to look at all my ramblings about my latest gardening type projects on the other threads all the time... if you do want to look at mine and other peoples projects then you will need to actually come into this thread on your own free will to see them lol!... :smug::p:D:)...

...just to start the thread up I might 'copy' and 'paste' some of the stuff that I started up in the other threads into this one so as to continue posting in the line of events being that we're only 9 days into the new year there won't be too much to transfer... here's my original post for this year to start things off with...

...Happy New Years to all of my friends on this glorious website... you all might recall (last year lol!)... that I did this terrarium and put it up in the '2015 Today I:' forum for all to see... see below... (to see that Terrarium click on the 'expand' tab)...

...2015 Today I... am posting my creation of the day... I spent about 6 hours yesterday creating this terrarium in an old 45 litre carboy bottle from a laboratory that I got from work one day many many years ago...I had spent about 4 hours in creating the gardening tools for it prior to putting it all together... (the tools are sitting beside the bottle in the first image)... I had plants growing in it for about 8 years way back many years before... they all got attacked by insects when I forgot to put the mesh insect screen on the bottle one day... (you can see it in image #5 in place)... it's been sitting in my shed for about 5 years after I got disheartened with it and stored it away... I rediscovered it and here you are... my new bit of paradise!... lol!...

...I have another two about the same size still in the shed... they will be next... one of them will have just carnivorous plants like sundews/venus fly traps and pitcher plants in it when they come into season pretty soon... (I can't wait to do that one lol!)... the third bottle I haven't decided what to do with... (any suggestions?)... the bottles used to store Hydrochloric Acid and other such liquids in them... the lab technicians were just throwing them into a giant bin and smashing them as I walked past one day and I managed to rescue 3 of them... my heart had a palpitation when I saw that they had already smashed about 10 of them!... what a waste...

...the last image was taken of the inside of the carboy right in the mouth of the bottle and if you're curious it's sitting on a spare turntable that I use for my Bonsai plants when working on them so that I can turn the terrarium each day so that the plants don't grow in just one direction only... anyhow... I present to you... my new terrarium... ta dah!... cheers.

@Mr Stickyfingers they are sooooo cool. Can't wait to see your carnivorous one. What a fabulous idea!!!

...well guess what?... I've spent the entire day creating that very thing... I'd like to present to you my very first messterpiece of 2016... tadaaa!... my new Carnivorous Terrarium!... first the front and the right hand side views...

dsc00773-jpg.50959

...and now the back view and you can see the original temperature indicator strip that was placed on the bottle in the lab where it used to be with Hydrochloric Acid in it at the time... that really is handy for me to know when I need to water it lol!...

dsc00776-jpg.50960

dsc00777-jpg.50961

...and now some close-up's of the plants themselves... there are Venus Fly Traps and various different species of Pitcher Plants... unfortunately Bunnings had no 'Sundew Plants' that I was really hoping to get my hands on so I'm now hunting elsewhere to find one or two...

dsc00780-jpg.50966

dsc00781-jpg.50967

dsc00782-jpg.50968

...and finally where the terrarium now lives... it's next to our Buddha that my darling wife makes sure to rub his tummy to bring her good luck at Bingo each time that she goes lol!... and also near my fibreglass 'Cat' and 'Dog's... (the dog is named 'Cat' and the cat is named 'Dog' just to mess with the grandkids heads... I'm just so evil at times... mauwahahahahah!... lol!)...

dsc00792-jpg.50969

...when you look closely at the bottle the bottom row of pebbles and the soil itself may seem a tad bit too deep which restricts the height for the tall pitcher plants to grow to some but I did that on purpose because I read on a forum that the deeper the bottom row of stones (which store water) and the deeper the soil actually helps the plants survive the cold temperatures of winter because the root systems go deeper to protect themselves from the cold... hence the restrictions on the growing height... I saw a bottle on the Internet where all the tall Pitcher Plants were growing out of the neck of the bottle high into the air... I'm hoping that mine do the same... it looked awesome!... lol!...

...anyhow... that's my first project of 2016 done!... woohoo!... I hope that you all like it... it was such great fun to do... it really was... (I hope that you all had a great New Years night and didn't have too bad a hangover this morning lol!)... cheers.

...well... now that's done perhaps we can now get the ball rolling with this thread... I may re-post the other stuff that I did into this thread too for continuity to be in line with what has already been posted in the other threads otherwise people may lose track on which threads they saw all of the stuff before...

...just so that everyone knows... I'm by no means a gardening expert but I do know a few things to do with the garden and plants etc... but please don't think that this thread is 'MY' thread... it's for everyone lol!... cheers.

I love your deck and the Cat and Dog LOL - look so real! Could almost be stuffed animals LOL! Awesome looking Terrarium!

Linking @shaydee :)

PS - Can we have an updated shot of your herb garden?

...sure hooleydooley... no worries... as you may remember the herb garden looked like this back on September 8th (last year lol!) on the day that my sweet darling wife and I revamped it...

new-herb-garden-08-09-015-jpg.49718

...and this is what it looked like on November the 23rd (last year... heehee!) before I gave them a massive haircut to dry a lot of the herbs in my dehydrator machine...

dsc00721-jpg.50711

...and this is it today after having harvested them all 2 or 3 times since the photo above...

dsc00801-jpg.50970

...these are the 'Jalepeno' chillies on the left hand side of the second row that will soon be picked...

dsc00803-jpg.50971

...and these are the 'Hot Thai Chillies' below...all the red ones were removed to be processed into powder and chopped chilli pieces for cooking and also to be used in an insect spray that I want to make... (they were removed early this morning before I took the photos)... that's why there are mainly just green chillies in the photo... I took one of the red 'Hot Thai Chillies' early this morning while harvesting them and bit into it to see how it tasted... I couldn't really taste anything so I took a second bite and then it hit me... my eyes instantly watered... my nose began to run and I broke out into an immediate sweat... IT WAS THE HOTTEST DAMN CHILLI THAT I HAVE EVER EATEN!!!!... MY GOD IT WAS HOT!!!!...

...my sweet loving wife was laughing her head off as I was spitting and sputtering all over the place until she took pity on me and told me to run inside and have some yogurt to take out the hot taste lol!... it worked like a charm God bless her lol!... she saved my life!!!!... (no wonder that I love her so much eh?)... lol!...

dsc00802-jpg.50972

...and finally... as you can see... here are the herbs that I've cultivated and dried in my dehydrator from all of those cuttings... from left to right on the top row... Mint/Continental Parsley/Basil/Common Parsley/Rosemary Leaves and Coriander... on the bottom row from left to right... Dill/Marjoram/Sage/Celery Powder/Rosemary Powder/Peppermint and Thai Basil... the last one is Orange Peel Powder which isn't a Herb of course but when we eat the dried Oranges that I do in my dehydrator we keep some of the rinds of the Oranges to make into powder... it's great to sprinkle into soups or onto salads... we love it... with the overload of herbs I put them into herb jars that my dear sister supplied me and give them to her... she loves it as you can imagine... my brother has some too but he's not really a herb person but his wife loves it too... needless to say... I'm 'mister popularity' with the both of them lol!...

dsc00821-jpg.50973

...the big Coriander bottle was a full container at one stage but because it's one of my favourite herbs it's nearly empty lol!... time to harvest some more when it regrows lol!... in other parts of my garden I had celery growing at one time but that has gone now but other herbs that I have scattered around my garden in various places are Vietnamese Mint/Corsican Mint/2x Bay Leaf bushes in pots/Lavender and Thyme... there may be others but I can't remember them at the moment... well there you have it hooleydooley... I hope that you liked it... cheers.

Oh @Mr Stickyfingers your creations are so cool, and kind of creepy, and pardon my ignorance - how do they get bugs to eat?
Do you have to feed them?
Surely no bugs fly in there?

...the bugs are naturally attracted to the plants because they emit a (methinks) sweet smell to attract them... with the Venus Fly Traps they have 3 little spikes inside their leaves and when a bug walks through them they close shut and the bugs are slowly digested over days or weeks... with the various 'Pitcher Plants' they have a sweet smelling digestive liquid sitting in the base of their urn-like leaves and have little spikey 'hairs' that point downwards inside the 'urns' towards the sweet nectar and when the bug goes downwards to drink it they can't climb back upwards because of the downward facing 'hairs' and then slowly slide downwards into the liquid to slowly rot away to feed the plant... basically... they drown and get digested lol!...

...2 flies and one mosquito that I saw went into the bottle as I was putting it together!!!... I hadn't even got halfway through it and they went in there... I never saw them come out so I guess that they were caught... because the neck of the bottle is pretty small the bugs don't think of flying upwards out of it they just fly around and around the sides of it... when I had finally finished it and was sitting there and having a beer and was admiring my latest 'messterpiece' I saw 2 more flies just walking around the lip of the bottle until they finally crawled inside and start flying around... again... I never saw them come out either... I love it!... natural fly baits lol!... (it's the first time that I was actually wanting to see more flies around) lol!...

That is so awesome Mr Sticky...lets start a garden thread so we can share pictures

...hahaha!... thankyou Lindsay but I'm not sure if many would bother to look at anything to do with gardening... many people think of gardening as a chore instead of fun to do Lindsay... "aw shit!... I've got to weed the garden beds and whipper snip and mow the bloody lawns!"... I can hear them howling out lol!...

A carnivorous terrarium! That's pretty bad ass unky sticky!

...thanks bleachy my good friend... I have one more big Lab bottle like that one but it's all gnarly and really scratched up... I was thinking of putting in some really ugly sort of plants of some kind to compliment the crappy looking bottle lol!... I don't really know what to put in that one but I'm sooooo open to suggestions lol!... I can't put mean looking Cacti in it because they don't fare well at all in closed steamy environments at all... so as I say... does anyone have any suggestions?... cheers.

wow MrS - I love it! you have your very own not-so-secret herbs and spices range :)

btw - did you know CBBUK has started? and not one porn star among them

...we've almost caught up... just a couple of posts to go... here was the next post that was put up... cheers.

The new Terrarium you have made is AMAZING! @Mr Stickyfingers

What kind of tools do you use for the planting?

...thankyou so much Daltrim... that is so nice of you... I've made them all from scratch actually... they all have bamboo handles that I was using for small garden stakes as you can see in this photo next to the first Terrarium that I created below... they are all held together with good old duct tape lol!...

dsc00685-jpg.50974

...they are just made from old forks and spoons and a blade from a stanley knife and a piece of wire with a hook-like curve to it and a piece of plastic to act as a trowel...that wiggly shape wire thing that you see in the middle opens up by squeezing the wire together to release a plant wherever I want to in the bottle... that piece of towel that is in a ball shape is for cleaning the inside glass surface in the bottle itself... it's held onto the wire with velcro tape for easy replacement... I could probably buy a professional set of tools but as you have probably figured out I love to make things myself and just improvise with tools that I make myself lol!... I could easily afford to buy them but it would take all the fun away from it as far as I'm concerned... I'm so glad that you liked it... :)... cheers.

Very impressive! ^
The ball made out of towelling is a great idea for cleaning.

You are so handy Mr Sticky. And your herb garden is fabulous. My dad loved his garden. He had herbs, tomatoes lettuce, cucumbers, corn, zucchini, and many more. Just in the back yard. For the past 10 years he and mum would make their own red wine, and bottle it. This last batch though he needed help with it as he was unwell. He loved birds too. Each morning he would throw some bird seeds on the lawn and about 30 doves would come( not the white doves). After a while, each morning they would be waiting for him. Since he has passed, they don't come anymore. But strange thing happened yesterday. I was leaving to go see my mum, she lives 20 min away, and outside on the front lawn, there would of been 25 doves. There was no food there for them. We never had birds like that on our lawn. Was so many of them. We have his funeral service tomorrow and I just don't know how we are going to cope.

...thankyou shadow2... your dad sounds awesome... it seems like him and I would've got on quite well together and would've been good mates from the sounds of it... many years ago I used to make my own whisky/bourbon/vodka and rum in in big bottles in my shed... I never tried to make wine though... maybe he could've given me some good tips at the time eh?... lol!... I used to brew home made beer with my brother too for several years until I was working outside in the garden and kept drinking the beer all day... my darling wife wondered where I was and went looking for me around the yard... she found me fast asleep in our big stinky compost garden behind the shed at the time... flies were hovering all around me too lol!... needless to say... I stopped brewing my own beer from then onwards... it tasted too nice and was too easily available... lol!...

...my heart is with you all at the funeral tomorrow shadow2... I hope that the day goes well for you all... I lost my dad 12 years ago and my mum 2 years ago... I know exactly how you feel my friend... take care... cheers.

...I think that with the next post we will be all caught up so here was the next post... cheers.

How about filling the container with small sea shells?

...hmmmm... that sounds pretty gnarly Daltrim... great suggestion my friend... (Sticky takes a mental note to oneself)... **'Self !... sea shells!**... thanks Daltrim... cheers.

...I guess that my gardening things that I'm posting all of the time is probably getting a tad bit tiresome and **YAWN**... 'old hat' by now but I just have to show you this just to get it out of my system... I guess that you all remember the first terrarium that I did... this one below...

dsc00693-jpg.50991

dsc00694-jpg.50992

...well after the success of my second Terrarium (the Carnivorous Plant one) I just couldn't help myself and revamped my first Terrarium to include some Carnivorous Plants too... (some of the original plants went all scrawny and tattered... hence the reason for the change)... so here is the result of the revamp...

...so now I have two natural forms of insect control working for us on our back deck now lol!... do you see that closed #1 (arrow pointing to it) Venus Fly Trap leaf at the front of the last image?... that is a trapped fly in there... I was just checking to see how the bottle was going a few hours after having done it and as I was watching a fly was walking around the lip of the open bottle and crawled inside and half flew around in there for a while... realising that there wasn't really much room to fly around in there he just started to walk around and eventually went between the prongs of that particular leaf and it closed instantly... he kept shaking around in there after it had closed on him for about 10 minutes while I watched... I'm sure that he kept shouting out "HELP MEEEE!... HELP MEEEEEEE!"... just like that poor schmuck in the movie 'The Fly' lol!... I'm sure that I did lol!...

...#2... #3 and #4... have their leaves closed too so I'm assuming that they have trapped some bugs too... I went back out about 2 hours later and am sure that I could still see a little movement in the leaf but it was only just moving so I assume that the plant has started 'digesting' it lol!... (shudder!... just how would that feel?)... lol!... anyhow... I've got it out of my system now and I'll try not to post anymore 'gardening stuff' for a while... I promise... lol!... cheers.

Please can you do step-by step instructions I want to try this

...aw nuts!... I was so 'umming and ahhing' on whether to do step-by-step photos as I was going through the process of creating these bottles... I never thought for a moment that anyone else would like to have a go at it... how selfish of me :sorry:... I'll see what I can do Lindsay my good friend... cheers.

thanks, those plants are quite expensive here so I might only be able to put one or two in. Can we have a seperate thread for it

****************************************************************************
...well there you go... we've all caught up at last!!!!!... and to answer your question Lindsay... here is that thread that you asked for... TADAAAAAAAAH!!!!... lol!... so let's just hope now that people get interested in it and start posting their own gardening type stuff on here too... then again... it really could be for what they have done to their houses or whatever that is outside too I guess?... why not?... I'll try and post some step-by-steps instructions for you soon Lindsay... cheers.

...who the?... what the?... where the?... aw nuts!... I've missed the start of it yet again!... I do it every time :arghh::bang::rolleyes::sorry:... I'll see you in that thread soon... thanks for the heads up crimmy...

...hahaha!... I'm getting so many herbs out of the garden that I seem to be drying them all the time... my sister is getting some too as well as others now... it just keeps on giving that herb garden... cheers.

They look amazing MrS. I went to a craft fair in November and teraniums featured a lot so came home and wasted an hour on YouTube but then forgot it was something I'd like to try. Yours look fantastic. Thanks so much for sharing xx

...thanks Cowie... that is so kind of you to say so... they are fun to do... the smallest Terrariums that I have ever done were inside light globes believe it or not so there's always time to create one of your own by using any glass container that is handy at the time lol!... if you do ever do one make sure that you post it on here... it would be great to see other peoples creations on here... cheers.

Sticky, you really are a man of many talents aren't you! Awesome work. :)

A few years ago I made a pond for my balcony which doesn't come close to your terrariums (terraria?) but it's nice when garden projects works out so I'm happy. The two fish I have are over two years old now. Their predecessors came to premature grief by accidentally jumping out at different times (? not sure, perhaps a bird tried to snatch them out? But either way they ended up stranded on the balcony.) But these guys, they're loving it. Should probably take a pic.
