Grande Fratello - available worldwide

Lost count of how many series they've done but Grande Fratello began in Italy on Monday and looks like clips and episodes can be viewed worldwide, but the live feed can't.

It's a 3.5 hour launch without ad breaks. I think on TV it was a 4.5-hour launch... and it finished close to 2am. I think the regular primetime shows for Grande Fratello are slightly shorter with a runtime of just 3.5 hours.

It seems odd for us (and even for me as a German who gets his fair share of extra long shows!), but it's not too unusual for Mediterranean countries. Their primetime starts later than it does in Australia or even the UK. Gran Hermano is currently on air, too, and they have 4-hour live shows as well. Canale 5 is also airing Temptation Island currently, those are 3.5-hour shows as well and finishing at 1am.

What I do find odd is that Grande Fratello doesn't have a single daily show. They have 4-5 shorter daily updates but most of them are over in 5 minutes... And then you get one or two episodes that are 10 minutes. And most of them air rather early, too. Around lunch time or early afternoon.

I think Grande Fratello is now on series 18, but it's a bit difficult to compare the number of series to other countries. Their civilian version is now a mix of celebrity and civilian housemates, similar to the Brazilian version of the show.

I guess they put extended highlights into the twice (?) weekly primetime show. I'd actually be OK with that - short daily updates then longer summaries 2-3 times a week.

Yes, Italy and Spain, and to an extent Germany, seem to love their primetime shows starting quite late and running for hours, though I guess really we're not that far off it in the UK with a two hour block every day (though split into two shows) and Aussie eviction nights got to the point where they were regularly 2.5 hours with a highlights show and ever increasing live eviction show.

Really like how they still have a proper website too rather than a barebones effort updated a couple of times a day with just features and previews rather than live house updates.

And for those without three and a half hours to spare here is three and a half minutes showing the house and beginning of the launch show.

There are no extended highlights on these extremely long primetime shows either. It has extended talks with the housemates though where they confront them with opinions and previous scenes from their life in the house. e.g. if there are two people having a big fight, they might show the viewers and housemates the events leading to the fight, the fight and diary room commentary. And then the housemates, host and the opinionist get a chance to comment on it and fight more. It could be about love triangles or relationships that start to form.

Through these talks and videos, you obviously get an idea of the main storylines but with the added bonus* for regular viewers that you also get opinions from inside and outside the house and not just a rehash of what you've seen previously. Throw in some surprises (e.g. visits from family), nominations or evictions and you get your typical primetime episode of Grande Fratello.

(* I don't know if I'd call it a bonus.. it's obviously not your traditional "cut off from the outside world, not knowing how you get seen" kind of Big Brother and none of the debates and arguments happen organically.)

Is quite refreshing how Grande Fratello still has a fully functioning website with all the content most Big Brother websites had back in the 00s. As well as live feeds there are plenty of news updates and videos (at least a dozen a day of each) as well as a live blog tracking events in the house. Meanwhile the BBUK app just uploads one preview of the nights episode during the day and a couple of silly polls.
