Curious to gather everyone’s thoughts on how Ten will approach the casting for the reboot?
Do they play it safe like 9 did in 2012 or do they take a gamble like Ten did in 2008? Or do they land somewhere in between?
The casting for 2008 had the right idea. The issue was they cast more to fit a certain character type as opposed to just casting a bunch of diverse, weirdos like the UK did so well from 2004-2006. I think they had a similar intention but got bogged down deliberately targeting “types” e.g. an older lady, a little person, the blonde bimbo, even shock value like Travis with the high pitched voice and Dave with the cult background. Ultimately the cast didn’t quite hit but they were on the right track. Instead of casting genuinely interesting people, however, they just cast stereotypes and the people themselves weren’t all that interesting.
In 2012 Alex Mavroidakis went the other direction and played it super safe, casting rather bland people who weren’t going to cause controversy and were simply cast to provide a bit of family friendly entertainment(They were just dull and boring in reality).
In 2025 first and foremost I hope they find an incredibly diverse bunch of interesting people. Beyond that I can see them leaning towards the 2008 model of finding a real diverse mix as opposed to the 2012 tactic of casting same-same, bland individuals who aren’t going to rock the boat. I just hope this time around Ten only cast people who are interesting in their own right. By all means try and find older people and people from different backgrounds or who stand out from a crowd, however, only cast them if they are interesting beyond that. I’d rather a diverse cast of individuals as opposed to a diverse cast on paper.
Secondly, and this isn’t easy in the modern world, I hope they do everything they can to just find “normal” people. The term “everyday Australians” is such a cliche in BBAU terminology nowadays that it even makes me cringe but I hope they implement a strict vetting policy on ensuring the cast isn’t stacked with fame hungry, influencers. I think the modern world is tired of the influencers thing. You can have 1 or 2 as they still represent a portion of society but for gods sake chuck a truck driver in, or a chef, teacher, garbage man/woman, nurse ect. Just find some interesting, relatable people.
Finally, in today’s society with how multi cultural Australia is I’m going to be somewhat annoyed if we have 1 or 2 token POC. That might be hypocritical to say as I’ve just spoken about casting interesting people first and foremost and peoples race, ethnicity ect. shouldn’t matter but if I see 4-5 cookie cutter, gym junkie white men in their early-mid 20’s I’m going to be annoyed. There are so many interesting people out there from all different multicultural backgrounds in Australia. Watching a bogan truck driver from WA interact with a lawyer from Sydney with a multicultural background and seeing them interact and find common ground is a far more interesting dynamic than watching 2-3 white blokes aged 22, born and raised in Melbourne talk about footy and chicks.
