Rewatch Big Brother 2003 YouTube stream (Aug 15-17 + 22-24)

As they shouldn't have. It was awful. This a VHS transfer and is a million times better than the upscaled one they streamed in the marathon, which made everyone's eyes look like Simpsons characters.
 
The 2003 finale was probably the peak of Gretel's genuine happiness across all her BB series with Reggie and Chrissie as the final two and then Reggie winning. I remember following the leadup to the season here on BBB and the daily updates back when it first aired and it felt like such a good season overall even back then. The season launch episode is probably my favourite BB episode of all.

After Vincent left at final 5 there was really no conflict whatsoever, even with Anouska still in the house, so the daily shows didn't have many new storylines to show. They were fortunate to have two stellar housemates in Reggie and Chrissie to keep things mildly interesting for those weeks but I can see why they moved towards more events and speeding up the endgame in future years.
 
Currently re-watching this series on YouTube as I didn't catch it on the stream back in August.
Despite watching it back when it originally aired in 2003, there's so much I don't remember about it, so it's been good to get a refresher.

I'm up to week 11, which is at a time where BBUK's Anouska enters the house for a week. I've been reading up and apparently this was part of a housemate exchange which, in addition to a BB Africa housemate entering the BBUK house, was meant to see BBAU's Jo also enter the BBUK house, but this never eventuated. Did the reason this never eventuated ever come out? Part of me suspects maybe her then-boyfriend, Tim, after seeing how she acted in the AU house, was opposed to the idea, but then I doubt he'd have that much power, either, so I'm guessing there was more to it, but I can't seem to find anything online.

I finished watching the 2003 season last night and I actually got quite emotional seeing Reggie win. Gretel did a great job hosting that season.

I finished my re-watch of 2003 a couple of weeks ago. (I then went on to my first watch of 2013 and 2014, which I now regret immensely, but that's a story for another time.)

You could tell Gretel was so happy to announce Reggie as the winner. I truly feel 2001 to 2003 were Gretel's best years as BB host. From 2004 onward, you could see the novelty wearing off for her with each passing live show.

I enjoyed 2003. The producers clearly wanted to explore new depths as to what they could do with the show, and they definitely achieved that. The cast save for a few exceptions (Ben, Carlo, Saxon), was great. If I had to pick a negative, I would say it was that Insider show they did on Friday nights, hosted by Tim Ferguson with people from various media outlets on the panel each week. I just didn't really feel it added to anything, but they're easily skipped in any re-watch.

I'll second 2006. I enjoyed that one a lot. 2007 was also enjoyable.
The beauty of 2005, 2006 and 2007 is that they each went for 100 days, so there's a lot to get your teeth stuck into.
 
I'm watching this season for the first time. Doesn't seem bad, though a bit slow paced with the housemates not going in at the same time. Up to the second week (after the first noms). Housemates overall seem fine; I still need to grow into them. The house is gorgeous as its design goes. I'm enjoying Chrissie a lot (no wonder she got famous after this). Already can't stand Benjamin and the guy with the third nipple (Daniel?) who seems cringe & silly - Very bad with names here because of the split house! Not a fan of the house being split as it's hard to know the housemates that well! Read that on day 22 the housemates will be united, thankfully (so 10 more shows to go for me).

Also, too many pointless interviews with the BB02/01 housemates and that psychologist Carmel Hill (who seems more like a fortune teller or something) - Serves no purpose - Were people that bored back then? Hopefully this shit ends by the 2nd week (where I'm up to).

Carmel Hill was such a nothing burger for me. Said nothing that a first year psych student couldn't have said about the housemates.

I still wish Tamara had got to go in. She was cute and seemed funny.
 
Oh yeah, I don't like Big Brother's voice (Peter Abbott?). OG or not, the guy is too soft spoken and he even stutters and slurs some of his words at times (the guy isn't an artistic or well-trained voice actor like the others). Also, why are the housemates playing musical instruments and reading books in the house? You're supposed to be cut off from such things. Feels odd to have someone playing the guitar and harmonica at random times. Doesn't seem "Big Brother-ish".

Still, I'm enjoying this season. Looking forward to finishing it off. Not sure if I should watch BB02 next? Maybe I'll leave it last. Cos people are saying it's a boring and bland season with a weak cast.

^And yeah Tamara seemed like an interesting and bubbly housemate. Must've hurt that she was rejected. I mean she walked in at the opening show with Gretel only to be discarded the next day? Ouch. Yet she seemed unusually joyful in the interview with Gretel after she was told she didn't make it in the house. I wonder why. Was she paid a lot or what?

It sounds like BB02 (and probably also BB01) wouldn't be for you. They're far less polished than even BB03, which it sounds like that's what you're after.

Enjoying something doesn’t require uncritical praise. I'm enjoying BB03 and had thoughts—apparently both can coexist. I’m just capable of noticing flaws at the same time. The fact that I bothered critiquing it suggests I cared enough to engage. No need to be testy.

Btw, BB04 seems similar and it was an amazing season.
