Early thoughts on 10 revival

Okay we are a few episodes in now and the first nominations down. I have some things to get off my chest. Originally went to post this in the daily show thread but it got a little long winded so apologies in advance for the long post!

Firstly, it is definitely getting better and growing on me. The producers appear to be taking notes and trying! A few things have come to light for me though. Firstly, I was the biggest advocate for vote to save during the channel 9 era. Felt like a great fit for the show at that time. I am now convinced we should be back on vote to evict. Can’t even pin point why exactly but I feel like that should be the go.

Secondly, I also think the show would translate much better if BB was stricter. I felt it went overboard around 2006/2007 a little bit with how strict BB was and how pedantic BB got on minor things like pressing housemates during nominations despite them stating completely valid reasons. Seeing Colin fuck around during nominations, however, and also referring to BB as broski or “Big Brev” is pissing me off. Bit late to change it now but if it returns next year, top of the list for me would be bringing back “meaner Big Brother”. This would include giving housemates nomination points if they fuck around during their noms and handing out fines for breaking rules. Producers please take note.

Regarding tonight’s episode, as I said above, it is growing on me. It’s much better. Still some work to do on the music and overall production but definitely trending in the right direction. Now having said that, FUCK RIGHT OFF with the narrative pushing. Did they really need to include Colin putting a towel above his chest after a shower at the start of the daily show at the expense of some of the dinner conversations? Speaking of the dinner conversations, why did they cut so much out? Particularly Colin being a little prick? Finally at the live nominations segment towards the end, Mel going “Are we surprised Colin has some votes, would everyone save Colin?” It is clear as day the producers are pushing Colin as a winner. Just show us the damn things going on inside the house authentically and let us make up our own minds! Fuck!

The whole premise of Big Brother and what makes it different to every other reality show is we are just flys on the wall seeing everything unfold naturally. Please do not try and manipulate the edit to make certain housemates look good and others bad, particularly if the reality is different! Playing sob music over housemates crying in the diary room ties into this. Genuinely feels like this is so close to being a really strong revival but these little details make a MASSIVE difference to the overall quality of the show. The ironic thing is if they let this all play out naturally and showed everything as it genuinely is, the hype would grow faster and more people would be flocking to the live streams I feel.

Forgot to mention Mel was an inspired choice as host. Really hoping this revival succeeds because Mel with a few seasons under her belt could be an elite tier BB host alongside icons like Davina & Gretel.

My comment above complaining about Mel pushing the surprise of Colin getting nom votes was not a dig at her. That was clearly a producer driven thing.

I agree with all those points. BB should be more authoritative, but not an arsehole. And you're spot on about the narrative. Mel talking up Colin tonight was completely unnecessary.

Actually I was going to post a poll so people could score 10's 2025 BBAU out of 10, but waiting until after the eviction so we've got a full week to judge it by.

I think this is first time in bb history out of all previous 9 and 10 series (i dont acknowledge 7 apart from the one that brought back Tully, Dave, Estelle, etc) that I dont care much for anyone? I guess if I had to really pick who I slightly like maybe Vincent and Coco? Bummer that Mitch didn't get in. Maybe he would have ended up my fave.

Also stop it with the playing of music to basic moments in the show. Like to try and get you to feel sad or something. This isnt a drama/soapie! Just use music like you would in previous 9 and 10 series.

Also worst house ever! So many bright colours and yard is too tiny! No space for kicking a footy or having a decent jog or good hiding spots! Cmon dont let it be so exposed to people in Dreamworld as well. It wasn't before! Closed off from outside world, remember?

Also worst BB voice as well. Sorry but I prefer Peter Abbott, Nick Colquhoun and Leon Murray versions. They were able to be authoritive. Pete Cunningham voice is too soft.

Oh and yeah I prefer when BB runs for around 3 months like previous 9 and 10 versions and not a couple of weeks like this. Too rushed! Not enough time to get to know them. If BB returns after this please work on fixing this. Even other shows like Masterchef and The Block were able to go for same time or longer.

pretty much agree with everything you said.

although initially i didn’t like the DR being used as a confessional, i’m honestly starting to not mind it. i don’t like how much they’re doing it though, maybe during one segment an ep would be fine. it’s just a nice change to the traditional DS formula being footage from house, housemate walks in DR, DR scene plays.

Although before the series, i would have been opposed to this, i don’t mind the music they play while mel is talking during the live shows. although i definitely think they play it too much and think one segment is enough as a nice change of vibe. but i do think if they keep this aspect, they need to change the music as it gives cheap dating show love island energy.

daily show music needs to go though, if they keep it, i could only handle it in very beginning of ep morning scene and scene transitions.

agreed, meaner bb needs to come back, i just don’t think kind bb does anything for the show, it just makes the show seem playful. mean bb was at least somewhat comedic and was funny to see housemates put in place.

hoping for a longer opening titles aswell.

other than that cast is great, mel is great, live feeds are great, house shoots great on camera, stage looks awesome. they’re really starting to make the stage feel eventful despite how tiny it is. there’s definitely been more things they’ve got right than wrong.

I thought I was enjoying it, but it's getting exhausting how soft BB is.
All the pre-series promos were about how BB was bigger and badder. (They even used Billie Eilish's Bad Guy in many of them.)
Yet all BB does is joke around with the HMs. The clapping the lights off before bed is just stupid.

I don't want Nick Colquhorn levels by any means. (I found his slow pace of speech to be incredibly annoying as well.)
But I want something more than this. There have been no punishments (at least nothing has aired) for the countless rule breaks seen on stream: discussing nominations, not wearing microphones, discussing past series, all of which, at least in the OG era, i.e., supposedly what this series is meant to be going back to, were against the rules.

I get that it's the first week and that maybe I need to give it more time. Maybe BB is planning to lull them into a false sense of security by being relaxed in the first week and the come down like a tonne of bricks in the second week, but with the short period that this series will run for, it needs to pick up sooner and not later.

I was going to post a similar thread this weekend to give it a week, but you've beat me to it! I agree with everything here.

- BB does need to be stricter. Him playing nanna almost defeats the purpose. Nick played an absolutely solid and memorable Big Brother during his time, and I'd like to see a bit more of a shift to that character. Not 100% but I think some notes should be taken, but perhaps it doesn't work in our "everybody wins - here's your participation trophy" times. I'd also like to hear more than Pete's voice. Deputies are a very nostalgic part of BBAU. We've heard one briefly. The other night his voice changed to Pete's at the end of the conversation! Dubbed af and they couldn't even maintain the continuity of it.

- the music does need to be cut or even eliminated. Parts of the editing style just scream spoon feeding the audience. Avid viewers are more than capable of feeling on their own. The audio mixer needs a performance review, too. The shit music was louder than Mel.

- the diary room "confessionals" are an interesting addition and scream channel 7. One or two in an episode would work but that's it. It's just a generic reality television style that doesn't really separate this show from any other reality show.

- the favouritism editing is crap. What's the point of the live feed if you're going to attempt to sell certain housemates? I get the average casual isn't religiously watching it like many. But for those who are watching it, it's really manipulative to see it happen.

The producers have made a massive improvement since day 0 but it still needs work. I'm not sure if they are actively reading these or are collectively self correcting on their own.

Nothing can be done about it now, but the house needs A LOT of work too. If 2026 presents a new season I hope we get a better (and less loud) house and a promise to actually return to OG.

Seems Close to the original
I doubt the every have the budget of those early day
Much higher viewer numbers meant higher ad earning
companys were literally lining up provide there products as interim prizes

After last night's episode, it is definitely growing on me. I agree the sound mixer needs to have a stern talking to, a couple times they'd go in/come out from the break and the mix from the stinger to their shitty music was awful.

They're either taking notes from here, or they're fine tuning each episode based on their own assessments, which makes me wonder how much of the OG crew have actually returned... as a sprinkle of an OG factor has been incorporated into each episode so far. Especially the theme being played more last night than any other ep.

As far as the narrative pushing goes, I don't think that will stop, given when I went to vote last night, it again said "for entertainment purposes only." Will we ever see a BB that actually listens and allows their audience to decide? Who knows? But I would like to see the outcome this Sunday and review all their socials to see what the feedback will be.

Commented in the another thread about this but there’s definitely something off about how the backing track is being used. We either have editors that are extremely inexperienced or they’re having to meet some sort of quota or mandate. The adjustments they’ve made aren’t going unnoticed however it’s still a significant issue.

Agreed about the soapy music and the darn voice!

Leon Murray was not authoritative to me tbh. He was a bit softish too (though he seemed more authoritative in 2008). Pete Cunningham is a clone of Leon's, but even more 'gentler'. Nick Colquhoun is THE Big Brother for me.

Their images on the big screen in the living area seems OTT and unnecessary. They know they're on TV and there are cameras everywhere but to me that's just too much. Just makes them even more self aware. I'd find it really confronting tbh.

100%. But I’ve thought this since other places like the UK started doing it years ago. The big screen in the living room is unnecessary anyway, but in 2025 what else do you point your furniture at even if it’s a fake house.

I actually didn't mind the images on the big screen in the living area. I thought it was a simple and nice change. However, you do make a very valid point and I agree. It probably does make them more self-aware. HM's from the OG shows back in the day did say they very quickly forgot the cameras were there ... and that, after all, is what we want because they then act more naturally and we see their actual personalities, instead of them playing up for the cameras.
