BBAU Rewatch

My love of Big Brother has always come down to the fact that my mum loved it. My entire early childhood I remember her always talking Big Brother and hearing names like Sara-Marie, Jess & Marty, Reggie and Fitzy. Her love for the show has conditioned me to always think of the show as such a huge thing. My parents divorced when Nine brought back the show and I have never seen her so happy or excited for something before. Me her and my sister spent weeks watching clips online and looking at photos of us visiting the house in preparation for the revival. It's a period of time I will always hold dearly as a loved memory. My mum would have no idea how to navigate an Internet forum lol, I should try to convince her as she has a lot to say about how horrible the show has become. I think we may have the interview with Fitzy on file somewhere, I should definitely look into finding it.

I love this so much, it’s very wholesome!

When Jo was on I'm a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here (well, the spin off, but same difference) the following year in 2004 I remember she got in an argument with this obnoxious woman and held her ground. Still that was many years ago, but she was always interesting and strong-willed and had way more to offer than temptress.

I too would be curious to see how she would fare in the current strategic iteration of Big Brother.
I’m not saying that’s all she’s known for… @Zcsund1234 had compared her to Janelle and Parvati both of whom we’re known for using their looks to gain an advantage over men as well as their strategic minds.

The work does her no favours… She really didn’t need any help as she was already a pretty girl.

ETA: her husband... 🔥🤪🤤

I know, right? She was naturally pretty but obviously not prepared to age gracefully. Zero shade at all on any type of plastic surgery or modification, but in this case it really does add to the idea that Jo tied up her self worth so much in her looks, despite having other things to offer. But not her fault that people probably put this on her from a young age.

No shade here either but yes I agree.

Started my watch of 04. Comparing it to 01 and it feels like a completely different show already. I can kind of understand what people mean by it starting off slow. Making the housemates have to sleep outside in the first week seems really futile. Kane's an annoying dweeb and Wesley's cute. Aphrodite is also a bit more annoying than I recall. Let's see what else comes from this!

Seeing as you've now entered the Kris Noble era, that's something to consider in your production observations.
My biggest question about BB04 is what impact did the $1 Million "secret" really have on the series? What was the new technology? What brought us closer to the HM's than ever before? Did any of these pre-series adverts actually mean anything?

The first ones were all teasers, with the answer being "no" to all those questions. Unless we think the HMs played differently once they learned about the prize. So, uh, yeah, still no.

As for the tech I have nfi. Maybe they had more streams available? Did they upgrade the house cameras to digital? All so long ago.

Couldn't have been digital it was still analog in 2004. Even Foxtel was still analog in 2004 (I was a poor naive backpacker who got caught up in a direct sales scam selling Foxtel door to door for a few weeks).

The Australian networks were broadcasting (terrestrially) in digital from 2000 or 2001 (you can see BBAU1 in 2001 with a strap saying "Available in Widescreen Digital" - it wasn't HD but it was widescreen at least) - but anyway I'm talking about the actual cameras in-house, not the transmission broadcast here. Anyway it's probably something else that @Zcsund1234 will remind us of.

Oh, and when I first arrived in Sydney in late 1996 I was in a similar door to door ponzi scheme selling Optus Vision. I lasted a week and had to really fight to get the $150 I'd earned.

Cobra group? I lasted about a month... Same deal and they kept my bond.

Can't remember the name but they operated from Burwood. There was no transparency and they could say the customers had cancelled during their cooling off period so you wouldn't get your commission and have no proof either way.

It was probably Cobra as thats exactly how they operated. They were all over the place until a class action lawsuit shut them down just a few years ago.

Biggest difference so far is the episodes are heavily focused on story lines rather than everyone getting to know each other and conversation about themselves. Every conversation is about each other rather than their own lives very early on. Unsure if thats due to the cast or editing.

Both 2003/2004 seem to have Mike Goldman really trying to over sell a story line in his narration. He’ll say something like “Bree and Paul are feeling tense with each other” and it may just be a simple disagreement that leads to nothing or he’ll say “Ashalea lashes out on her fellow Housemates” which actually ends up just being a joke or sarcasm. It’s starting to become very much about contrived storyline’s that the editors want you to think are true.

As for the new technology, I’d say what I’m watching is definitely an increase in video quality (and that’s despite YouTube quality being poorer) BB04 is definitely filmed in better quality than the previous three seasons.

Oh I also somehow worked for cobra. Like literally one day. I am so the last person who should ever be doing sales and it was a very vague job description and they just wanted to get a train and set up a card table at a shopping centre and sell raffle tickets for commission only. Some sales people have the gift of the gab and it’s a perfect job for them, for people like me it’s a disaster. I said I wasn’t coming back the next day but I can’t imagine it was any loss since I was unlikely to bring them in much money let alone make a liveable wage. Definitely felt like a Ponzi scheme and they said I too could own a business someday and hire people to sell the stupid tickets.
