19- THE OFFICE (US)
giphy.gif

'The Office (US)' is one of the funniest shows I have ever seen. The only reason it is not higher is because of the later seasons. But when it was good it was really really good. I loved how cringeworthy it could be, and all the awkwardness that surounded Michael Scott and his actions. Episodes like that one where they all had dinner at Michael and Jan's house with his small tv was gut bustingly hilarious. I could watch seasons 2 to 4 over and over again.

I thought the US version was better than the UK one for two reasons. The first was because I thought the UK one was a bit meaner than the US one. That took off a bit of the humour for me. I thought the US one had a better balance of being funny and cringeworthy yet not mean (@Witty Banter style) where you felt sad for the person who was being picked on. The second reason was that I just found it way more enjoyable. It's that simple lol.

Were the first few episodes almost direct word for word transcripts from the British edition?
I have a faint recollection that they were but im not sure. I love the british version but the American one grew into its own show.

Yeah. It didn't start to gel until the second season.

Freeman was brilliant. Dark Horse was "Glyn" the warehouse manager.
US version I have not seen a great deal of. Carell is very good. And I appreciate they went their own way with the Duane(?) character and not try and copy the very british Gareth.

Dwight, and yes he is very good.

Do you think that making many many series of the US office diminishes its appeal for you a bit? Has it tended to re-cycle itself now?
I guess I like the British approach. You make a finite series of episodes. Like Fawlty Towers did also. The writing then becomes incredibly tight. Even nearly 50 years later Fawlty Towers stands up because there is barely a wasted word or a dull scene. Its been written so precisely.
But the answer I guess is the amount of money at stake in any US television production. Its a bigger numbers game.

I think as long as you have good writers, good actors and good directors you should be fine. I mean Doctor Who is in its 35th season and it has been regarded as one of it best ever seasons.

Have you ever read Ken Levine's blog?
