Katie using the word "poof"

Are you really offended by it?

I mean i know that word is synonymous (big word) with gay people but nowadays it's basically used as a term of insult. Especially when i was growing up it was just a word amongst various others that are used to pay out other people. I think it's embarrassing how sensitive you are to this.
I'm a straight female and I'm offended by how they acted. 15 minutes on a reality show doesn't excuse anyone from being a c*^t

Story updated with a copy of Katie's "poofy" comment.

Now she can't escape it.

This all sounds a bit vindictive, like it's more of an opportunity for a nice juicy witchhunt than something that actually matters. I'd hate to seem as if I support homophobia or anything but just can't bring myself to actually be outraged at someone saying "poofy scooter". It really doesn't matter and the only actual harm from it is going to be from people hounding her over it.

Well done. If she wants to pretend she now lives in the world of fame and celebrity and use social media to reach out to her "fans" then she has deal with what happens when she fks up.

I have never regarded HMs as celebrities. Yes, they were on TV for a few weeks, but to me it doesn't make them celebrities.

Those 3 are not just pretentious but also ignorant.

Would effeminate/ponce been a better word or less offensive what-have-you? The insinuation being that the guy riding that 'scooter' was 'soft'/less of a man for choosing to do so.

I'm actually not outrageously offended by it, but only because I've lived with so much indirect homophobia in Australia I have the ability to shrug it off. It's still completely unacceptable behaviour though.

This is a really pure example of how Australia is still a hotbed of latent homophobia. She says something was "poofy". Gays complain about a derogatory term, then the latent homophobes respond with "this is PC gone mad" or "people need to toughen up". Well actually what is happening is my sexuality is being used to degrade something (in this instance, a scooter and by extension the man riding it), therefore it implies that my sexuality makes me less of a human being. Which is not cool.

Do you think these defending comments would have been said if Katie had said "look at his chinky little scooter" (and a Chinese man was riding it). No, I didn't think so.

@Max Power this applies to your comment too.

Even if she didn't say "poof"

I thought about this for a long time before posting about it. What exactly did she say then?

Whenever I hear it I just think of Bert Newton. I find no offence in it whatsoever.

I recall watching GMA and Bert would say 'old poofs' so often so I don't see really any big deal in this at all. Actually the big deal is seeing Katie again as I miss her.

I'm pretty sure no witches were hunted here. Katie decided the guy on the bike was a pap, no camera in sight, but hey. Way to drum up non existant interest.

Bert's schtick was so 50s. Lame back then too.
The point was, it wasn't paps, no camera, and she was rude (no surprise there)

Yeah for sure, and as I said earlier she was immature for saying it. It was a dumb comment. (I mean come on, it's a pretty decent scooter not a pink 60s Vespa or something). It's the outrage over her choice of words that's a bit much.

And, you should have just left it as being a dumb comment.

Why, I had something to say about the reactions to the comment as well so I said it. One of the good things about this place is that it's not just an echo chamber where people have to agree with each other to post.
