Words/things I learned watching BBAU from the US

Wow; that was amazingly annoying! I know it's supposed to be over the top, but the stereotypes are ridiculous.

BTW, this year's HMs have eaten more fast food in the house than I've eaten in the last five years, I don't own a gun and I'm not a misogynist douchebag. :D

Agreed. Portlandia is a better joke representation of people in my part of the states than that video. Bike riding, Eco friendly, organic eating, craft beer enthusiast hipsters.

The only people who have guns are the armed forces, farmers - to put down sick animals and shoot kangaroos and foxes, sporting shooters, the police force, bikies and drug lords. (You should watch the first series of Underbelly on the latter). The criminals usually only shoot each other rather than us law-abiding citizens with a few notable exceptions - The Hoddle Street massacre and Port Arthur. No one actually wants to own a gun here for self-defence. The fear of crime isn't as high. By here, I mean - Perth. And basically, we think anyone who demands the right to own a gun is a weirdo and will probably be the first to "go postal" and the last person who should own one.

Nicely summed up:)
And OMG it is kind of funny how our crims just kill each other. I remember thinking that when they were all going loopy in Port Melbourne. .How convenient

Ha! Love me some Portlandia.

Actually I am quite intrigued by US and would love to visit one day and do a road trip. I always thought the US was so much bigger, (my excuse is that I am a blond and I'm sticking to it...:D ) than Australia so it is quite doable.

Id love to do a route 66. Whats it like. Has anyone been

Omg I remember that pink stuff. Pepto bismal. Soo disgusting. A thick liquid pink drink for tummy upsets.

Have you done Aussie road trips?

The drive across the Nullarbor, taking in the Great Australian Bite is rather epic

Hubby and I with 2 kids are planning on doing just that in 2 or 3 months time. So looking forward to our big trip - just have to sell the house first! Aiming to be in Cairns by about June 2014.

I've been from LA thru Barstow (both mentioned in the song) to Las Vegas. Driving on the right hand side of the road by myself I might add.

Its just like a ride between cities in Australia, except the cities are a lot bigger. People in the US in general are friendly (except New York where even the waiters are too busy to deal with customers).

Odd things
- their coffee has "cream", which isn't cream
- liquid cheese
- big industrial scale of factories; cities & suburbs seem to go forever
- tipping, don't forget like I did.
- toilets flush in a weird way (water goes up & down)
- pickle obsession! They put pickles on just about everything, which explains why MacDonalds has them on burgers.
- pretzel, bagel & pizza obsession in New York
- cheap "all you can eat buffets" in casinos, where fat Americans pile huge amount of food & go back for more

Do you know you travel for a whole day and all you see is wheat bins in SA, and a fridge at the front gate of the farm.
Very boring some of it, how old are your kids?

I love long distance driving, and endless stretches of wide open horizons like WA, but it has some boring parts.
I love all the natural parts, the real Nullarbor feels like you can fly off into outer space at night

2 kids we are taking are 12 (so home schooling) and 18.

I am not much of a traveler but am really looking forward to doing the Nullarbor. I have never done this trek so it will be an adventure. We really have no schedule or itinerary planned - we will just go with the flow and explore our beautiful country. And yes - really looking forward to seeing all the stars in the night sky without all the city lights interfering. I haven't seen that for about 6 years since I went up with a year 9 school camp to Wardagga Rock (on Ninghan Station - approx. 360km north of Perth off the Great Northern Hwy). Absolutely beautiful!!!

I used to live in WA, then my ex & I went to Tassie for his Maritime College studies, we would travel back each summer holidays and did it, by train, bus, car, plane.
I miss WA horizons, mmmm

Make sure you check out the Great Australian Bight - so amazing. And we just slept by the side of the road under those fabulous stars:)
What a wonderful trip to take as a family - before that 18 year old takes off

LOL is trying to .... but with no job ATM she has decided that an all expenses holiday with mum and dad is gunna be ok! :D We will be buying a caravan so we will be doing as much free camping as we can. Saves on costs but it is also the best way to experience a holiday like this.

We are planning to eventually settle down in Tassie too! Launceston area. Lots of family here in WA so we will be back and forth quite a bit (though hopefully mainly by air)

:D The Australian possum is soooo cute - the American possum looks like a rat!

I agree. I was surprised how cute the Australian possum is because The American possum freaks me out.

We once had one trapped in our closed garage and he wreaked all kinds of havok in there.

Yeah I forgot about that, that's why farmers hate them isn't it?

Oh and our other coat of arms animal, emus, don't taste as good.

Odd animals we eat - roos, some places they eat possum - never myself and have never seen it; crocs/crocodile is appearing a bit more in restaurants; water buffalo is on menus and so is emu both unusual though.

Everything else is protected I believe, ie Koalas, Wallabies, Echidnas, platypus, wombats; all the native birds - I think you would get a prison sentence if you tried to eat protected stuff.

Wombats are a car hazard too in some places, apparently it's like hitting a boulder.

You mentioned possum and that reminded me of a recent episode where the HM were feeding a creature in the bushes of the back yard. They called it a possum but it is entirely different than the animal we call possum. Yours looks more like a raccoon.

Route 66 goes thru many states. One of them is New Mexico and last year we drove Route 66 through Albuquerque, N.M. They've made an attempt to improve it and return it to its former "campy" glory but it's nothing like it was 50 years ago. If you are in Albuquerque it's worth a drive, but don't make a special trip. Probably best to look at photos from years back.
