Also worth mentioning:

But didn't they change the system to end preference deals?

They did for the Senate ahead of last year's Federal election, but those changes do not apply for the WA election.
This election will be a step back for WA voters, losing the Senate's new method of allowing voter control over preferences, and putting control over who gets elected back into the hands of backroom 'preference whisperers'.

Last year's Senate election allowed preference to be completed above the line, voters advised to number 1 to 6 for parties. This method will NOT apply for the Legislative Council ballot paper. Only first preferences count under the Legislative Council system and your vote defaults to the first preference party's lodged ticket. If you use the Senate method and vote 1 to 6, your preferences 2 to 6 are ignored.

Last year's Senate below the line voting option of numbering candidates from 1 to 12 also does not apply. If you vote below the line on your Legislative Council ballot paper, you must number every square. If you use the Senate's 1-12 method your vote will be informal.

It is very unfortunate that last year's Senate reforms will not apply at the Legislative Council election. The Senate reforms ended party control over preferences and meant the only preferences included in the count were those completed by voters themselves.

and

The formality rules for below the line votes are very tough so try not to make any errors. Don't duplicate numbers, skip numbers or leave squares blank.

If you want you can take an insurance policy by marking an above the line first preference as well. If for some reason your below the line vote is informal, the above the line box will 'save' your ballot paper. However, it will revert to the lodged preference ticket of the party.

I always vote below the line anyway, but for anyone who votes above the line, you might want to check out the group tickets in the ABC link above.

Channel 9's coverage has started, ABC's starts in 15 minutes. Polls close in 45.

Antony Green's called it for Labor. :)

The swing is coming through quite strong.

I'm off to bed soon, it's been a good night. The upper house vote will be interesting to watch, to see how many of those microparties get up and who Labor have to rely on to pass legislation. WA's upper house is still weighted in favour of rural areas, so it'll be more conservative than the lower house, but some of those random one-issue microparties might be easier to work with than say One Nation or the Shooters, Fishers and Farmers. We'll see.

Grant Denyer airlifted to hospital after serious car crash during Australian Rally Championships

TV presenter Grant Denyer has been airlifted to hospital after a horror crash during a car rally outside of Melbourne on Sunday.

The Family Feud host and amateur racing driver is believed to have suffered injuries to his lower back and pelvis in the accident, but is said to be in a stable condition.

Denyer, who only hours earlier was announced as a Gold Logie nominee, was flown to hospital by air ambulance from the Australian Tarmac Rally Championship in Marysville, an hour east of Melbourne.

Denyer's manager Titus Day told the Herald Sun the TV star managed to walk away from the wreckage after his car left the track and crashed into a tree.

'Grant is doing well and has not suffered any major injuries other than bruising around his hip and pelvis and a possible broken finger.
